Searching For Christmas In Hanoi, Vietnam
Christmas is not a tradition in Vietnam. In the expat area of Tay Ho, you will find Christmas decorations, but it is not a public holiday and is not typically celebrated by the Vietnamese.
I had a very low-key Christmas but then decided to head out to the Old Quarter in search of Christmas. My plans for a quiet Christmas soon went out of the window as the beer flowed.

Trying Classic Vietnamese Food - And More Adventures In The Old Quarter!
มุมมอง 38421 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Living in Tay Ho is very easy for an 'expat'. You have a choice of Western restaurants serving excellent pizza, burgers, fish and chips, even an English breakfast. But it comes with a cost. I realised that I hadn't tried enough Vietnamese dishes. So, I was determined to change that and attempt to discover more of Vietnam's incredible food. My food journey begins with a dish called Bo La Lot whi...

National Day In Hanoi, Vietnam

I had already headed into Hanoi Old Quarter to see if I could find out what was taking place on Vietnam National Day. I hadn't had any success finding any information so I decided to just head out to locations that I figured might have some sort of celebration. We had entered the rainy season in Hanoi and just experienced 3 days of non-stop torrential rain. Some bars and restaurants had to close because of flooding. Vietnam National Day was just days away so I decided to head to the Old Quarter to see if I could find out what was happening. I decided to walk and take in an undiscovered district for a banh mi and a coffee. The more I explore Hanoi, the more I love living here. Crossing The Long Bien Bridge By Foot - Hanoi, Vietnam

Mine was passable but I was disappointed that my so-called loved ones ignored the following items on my Christmas list: *A Kalashnikov. *1200 litres of nitroglycerine. *7 rolls of barbed wire. *A Scotch egg. *The Whizzer and Chips annual *Oliver Hardy's skull. Looks like I'm going to be busy with my vouchers in the January sales.

Fed up with every single Tourist coming to Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, the most polluted and populated cities/towns of North India and then uploading it TH-cam to call themselves TH-camrs. And then making sweeping conclusions about whole of India which is almost like a continent. A Lifetime is not enough to see all of India, so vast and so diverse. I’m genuinely disappointed that many foreigners visit only North India’s polluted cities (some of the most polluted in Asia) and then generalize that all of India is like that. India is a vast and diverse nation-a continent within a continent-where every 100 kilometers, the language, attire, food, education, and civic habits change. It’s like traveling from one country to another. The Northeast is serene, with fresh air and disciplined traffic. The South is lush, green, and boasts a literacy rate of over 95%, with development levels often exceeding those in the North. While the North offers incredible historical landmarks, the South has its own rich heritage, stunning landscapes, and welcoming people. And no, I’m not even from the South! I urge you and your audience to explore all corners of India-North, South, East, and West-before forming opinions. Each region offers a unique story, history, and beauty that deserve to be experienced. Don’t let the chaos of one city define an entire ancient civilization and its people!

I have learned that one should never listen to critics or allow one's creativity to be constrained by public opinion. After I became a well established children's author in the late 1990s, all that hoo-hah over the story I wrote about a golliwog who escapes from a toybox and joins a black & white minstrel show, set against the backdrop of Mussolini's dictatorship of Italy 1922-1945... sorry, I've forgotten where I was going with this. The medicine that my physician recently prescribed for gonorrhea is reacting badly with my mind pills and affecting my short term... erm, thingy.

I have also been affected badly by the untimely death of Duncan Norvelle and the behaviour of an elderly male neighbour who insists on wearing black rubber Y-fronts and doing a bump n' grind against my back door shortly before sunrise each morning. The sound that the metal studs make against the mahogany veneer is intolerable to someone as sensitive to noise as I. The methamphetamine and flavoured gin isn't helping much either.

Not sure if it was the fine words or the sense of spiritual warmth that I was projecting through East Yorkshire, across the flatlands of Lincolnshire, past Cleethorpes and up the Mekong Delta. If only Syd had had a Nick Berry to inspire him to escape his bonds of solitude and madness. I'm not looking for gratitude even though you'd be burning your paintings in the back garden and brushing your teeth by holding the toothbrush in place and jumping up and down if it wasn't for me. Can you play Ashes to Ashes? It's a very difficult song to get right. I really like Glen Hansard's versions. No one else apart from Bowie seems to be able to sing it properly. Every song is difficult for me to sing including 'Row, Row Row Your Boat'. I've already mentioned my sister's cutting assessment, that 'Poundland Leonard Cohen' comment. I think Len's a great singer! My equally honest mate Richard said I've got the worst singing voice he's ever heard. Thanks for that mate! I'm my own harshest critic though and I would compare myself to a tortoise with throat cancer or Peter Dinklage after someone blew powdered nutmeg up his nose with a trombone. Back to Glen Hansard though. The one he did on acoustic guitar in his hotel room and the one he did with his band shortly after Bowie passed. I end up in tears when the pretty lass recites Funeral Blues by W.H Auden at the end. th-cam.com/video/owigHhURF1w/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/ArH6KYNFNeg/w-d-xo.html I'm not planning on dying but in the event that I do, I want this at my funeral. Before or after people dance on my grave while laughing and chanting "at last, the bastard has gone!"

Never knew that you played in a 12 piece reggae band! What other mysterious parts of your history are you keeping back? Your stint as a morris dancer? Your brief period as an Al Bowlly tribute act? I like the sound ofThe Gratonas and props to them for their social conscience and charity work. I don't listen to reggae enough. I've got Handsworth Revolution by Steel Pulse on vinyl that I bought for a couple of quid from a charity shop a few years ago. I didn't realise at the time that Handsworth was also the name of an area in Birmingham. I thought "What are their aims here? Occupy the big Aldi, demand a system of agrarian reform in Sheffield's blandest suburb, increase tractor production by 127%?". I felt such a fool when I realised.

When I spoke to Chuck a few years ago after he played the Greystones, I asked him why Green on Red split up. He said "I'll put it this way pal. There was one member of the band who I wanted to knock on his back, scoop an eyeball out, drop a turd in the empty socket then pat it down with a soup spoon". I was quite taken aback, thought he'd say 'musical differences' or summat but I appreciated him sharing!

I remember how much you loved Bryn who you rightly described as "the most chilled out dog ever". I fully understand that thing about which one should I save, what can I do and when should I stop. When me and my ex-wife were exploring Havana a few years ago, we walked down an alley one day and some little half starved kids came up to us. We handed out a few coins that were pretty much a few pence to us back home but they were astonished and acted like I would if someone gave me 50 quid. It felt right and nice. Then more and more people approached us, not aggressively I should add. There were mothers holding babies begging us for money for medicine. We were conscious that we were fat white Westerners though not financially secure back home by our own standards. It got a bit complicated, mostly in an emotional way for us. I'm aware how absurd and weak it is to say that. Their lives were very hard, ours involved having to buy Lidl pesto instead of Sainsbury's. What can you do as an individual? Pretty much fuck all in the grand scheme.

She had deep respect for the place and its people but she was realistic about the problems that could face an unwary traveller. I used to enjoy looking at the photos she had collected in an album. Partly because some of them showed one of her hot friends in a halter top looking a bit sweaty! Sorry, no filter. Anyway, when we were in Cuba, there were scams going off but it was quite civilised. I guess the Policía Nacional Revolucionaria kept a stern eye on things but it felt like even the tricksters had some sort of self imposed limit on their behaviour because there were better social values over there. Perhaps I'm being a bit naive in saying that but I found that I could wander the back streets late at night with my camera and never run into any trouble. There'd be a gang of teenage lads in their Ed Hardy Ts and I'd start to become anxious but then it would just be waves, smiles and fist bumps even when there was no cops around. If I tried that back home in Stannington, I'd get the fuck kicked out of me, all my belongings stolen and possibly a couple of the local toothless knuckle-draggers pulling me behind a tree for some sort of Ned Beatty/Deliverance thing. Maybe I worry too much though. When we were in Havana, the only scam we experienced was when a local couple befriended us, offered to show us the sights and took us to a bar that did the 'best mojitos'. We sort of knew what was happening but we went along with it. An arrangement with the barman to overcharge us for a cut. Ended up with us probably getting charged several times the local price but spending less than a quid for every glass of very nice booze in a lovely quaint old place. We quickly learned that if someone appeared to be making polite conversation and said "Have you been in Cuba long? and you replied "Yes" instead of "I just got off the plane", they'd laugh and wink as if to say "Ah, you've already been got" and then they'd leave you alone. The only other time was when my wife was laid up in the accomodation with food poisoning in Viñales and I went out on my own to watch a band and get wasted on some potent honey liqueur. A really pretty young lass approached me and asked me to go to a nightclub with her. I didn't know the Spanish for "I'm sure you could do better than a fat, middle-aged bald bloke love" so I just smiled and carried on staggering down the street, falling over and banging my head on things.

Not gonna write another essay this time. All I want to say is, yet another great video man and walnuts, coffee and pork are a few of my favourite things! Hoping to see references to bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, perhaps even brown paper packages tied up with string in your next drop. No need to dress up as a nun though, unless you really want to add some icing to the cake.

I think I did discover a small bag of sauce after I'd finished it. Didn't need it. The pork is more than enough by itself :)

@@globaltreats That's what I tried to argue the last time I was in Mai Dong but it didn't end well. The authorities were involved and some form of lifetime restraining order. Sorry, there I go again. Whoa wo wo-oh.
