Making your own oil pigments and using old masters painting materials. Using black in oil painting.
In this new series, The Alchemical Journey, I am starting with the black pigments because black represents the first stage of the Alchemist's journey, the Nigredo.
Because I grew up in Constantia, and have lived among the vineyards all my life (and worked on pretty much all the farms) I've always wanted to make my own vine drawing charcoal and vine black oil paint.
So I did. And I love it.
Check out the charcoal drawing I did with my own vine black on my website.

That's a perfectly good way to ruin a palette knife. I use a crimping tool, the one I use to stretch canvas, then a pair of electrical dykes, much stronger to fold and hold the tube.

Damien, while thanking you for your entertaining and informative videos (which I just now found), please experiment: RUN AN OLD TUBE UNDER STRAIGHT HOT WATER FOR THIRTY SECONDS OR FREQUENTLY LESS, and half the time you won't even need pliers. I learned this trick from a mechanic.

Hi Damien, very interesting video. I've had some good results purifying linseed oil but not to the high standard that you have gone to but found your methods helpful. I once left a jar of my own purified oil in my shed by the window and forgot about it for two years. It had thickened and turned a nice very clear medium with hardly a trace of yellow and turned out to be the best I'd ever made! Thanks for your blog.

Does anyone know what happened to Tad Spurgeon’s website? When I try to access it, the browser says the server can’t be found. I cant find his book anywhere either. I literally just heard about the concept of adding chalk to home-refined linseed oil this wednesday. I’m particularly interested in solvent free painting because my bedroom is my workspace, i wont be able to open my windows in the winter, and I have many younger siblings whose brains are still developing and more sensitive to the damaging compounds in paint thinner and liquin. If anyone knows anything please let me know, its much appreciated.
