Project Hercules Chopper Build
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ส.ค. 2012
Random vids on making a chopper! First the engine, made from a few bits left over from a Bristol Hercules aircraft engine.
Next up the gearbox, with no actual gears but two speeds. Intrigued? Best get watching then!
Plus a few bonus CNC conversion threads...

Scoops Ahoy!
Who doesn't love a road trip? Especially one with a trip to Raw Steel Choppers at the end of it! (Well technically in the middle I suppose?). Great day to start the Xmas break and another lovely job from String.

Gearbox Refitted - Linkages a go go!
มุมมอง 1.3Kวันที่ผ่านมา
So the great change mechanism is half completed, the gear box ends at least. Also the clutch release mechanism. This means the diaphragm spring can go in and the clutch snapped shut. Awesome! Next up is the hand change ends if the linkage and clutch cable. The bike is now capable of self propelling - a milestone! #gearbox #chopper #chopperlife #engineering
Clutch release mechanism.
มุมมอง 1.1K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Progress on the clutch release mechanism, you can definitely see how it's all going to work now. From paper to metal the design has come alive! It'll be great to get the gearbox back into the bike this weekend, but as the cap screws are still in the post that'll have to wait. It all looks quite neat though. #gearbox #chopper #clutch #engineering

Progress on the gear selector mechanism by the shed fairies, while I review the damage from the recent weather change. Thinking about the rear lights in parallel, starting to get my mojo back. 💪 #gearbox #chopper #engineering #chopperlife
Winter is coming - oil up your junk!

Handy tip for anyone living in the UK as the weather turns milder this weekend. It reeks havoc with machines in unheated workshops. Get them oiled up ASAP! #engineering #condensation

Detent-shun!
มุมมอง 934หลายเดือนก่อน
Great progress on the gear detent mechanism, which when combined with a gate on the hand lever should make for a very positive gear change. A few minor jobs remain but we're very close to calling it finished 💪 #engineering #gearbox #gear #chopper
Pheasant Pluckers & a Gearbox.
มุมมอง 1.9Kหลายเดือนก่อน
A weekend away at the Pheasant Plucker rally didn't stop work on the gearbox. It's looking good with the detent next on the list. Good news is that both gears select well and it's not too fiddly to assemble. Plenty too do still, so stay tuned.! #chopperlife #engineering #gearbox #rally

Gear Selector Shafts Done 💪
มุมมอง 9662 หลายเดือนก่อน
All of the drillings have been completed for the gear selector shafts. They've gone in quite well and the dogs engage smoothly. Still a bit of work to do getting it all into the casing, especially when you can't see what's going on! But we're nearly there. A few extra machining operations to go after that. #engineering #chopperlife #gearbox
Gear selector shaft 1 drilled
มุมมอง 1.2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
First pair of holes drilled for the gear selector shaft. Everything seems to line up nicely so it's threading and tapping a shaft of the right diameter next. Small step but it's important not to rush, everything must line up or the box will be horrible to use! #chopperlife #engineering #gearbox
Move your hand and show us the box!
มุมมอง 4.5K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Initial work starting on the gear box selector forks. Only 6 holes to drill and one hole to tap, but the locations are critical so it needs some care 🫣 #chopperlife #gearbox #engineering
Midweek Special - Carbs Anyone?

Out with the box.
มุมมอง 2.8K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Finally got some quality time alone in the garage, without having to swim to get to the bench. We are back 💪 Gearbox out and tank off, both to be worked on. It's great to have done another little job ready for the next steps. #chopperlife #engineering #gearbox

Make it a kickstart 😂
Made in England baby.. HAPPY CHRISTMAS......
The tank looks great, good look for the bike.
Hopefully you put that master link onto the right side of the chain, hope you didnt miss it 😂
Looking great. Are you going to leave the frame bare but clear coated? Wishing you a happy Xmas from Sussex👍
@@firestorm755 undecided at the moment. I'm thinking of nickel plating the frame & mudguard and leaving the Aly parts as they are. I've got used to the bare metal look. 😁
i've watched some of your previous vids but can't remember if you mentioned it. what is Hercules' displacement?
@@o.u.t.olduglytroll3712146mm bore, 168mm stroke. 2796cc. (5.75" bore, 6.6" Stroke. 170.6 CI in American).
@@StoneEng Thanks, that's got to be a record.
Fuel consumption? It might be high.
@@ekspatriat had it for seven years and it's hardly used a drop 😁😁
hope it will be soon to see this thing ride, ive been following for awhile now
@@DatBlueHusky me too!
87th! 😅 Puzzled about the two-chain setup so better go back and watch previous episodes 🙂
I was puzzled about that myself at one time. The setup is quite unusual. One chain is driven by first gear the other by second gear. So it's a 2-speed transmission with each speed having its own sprockets and chain. Most unusual don't you think
@@stanleydenning it may be unusual but I can't claim it as my own idea. It was used in Morgan '2 speeder' cars as early as 1909! It was also used by others, although not common these days. A friend John Irwin suggested it (half as a joke), but I thought it was a neat idea so we tried it. 😁
It all becomes clear!
And if a chain breaks you can get home using the other 😊 redundancy..
First!
Lovin the longer video 👏🏻👍🏻
Extra weight in the shifter lever will make it feel better, so don't think the tube is too thick.
Have you considered a foot clutch and hand shift? Like the progress.
@@bradwiebelhaus7065 Like the suicide clutch on old Harley's? I briefly considered but have an alternate (better?) idea. I plan to use an internal twist grip for both the clutch and throttle, and use a foot brake pedal on reach side (One front and one rear brake). That way there will be no levers on the bars for a really clean look. 💪
@@StoneEng Outstanding!
Once you get this done any chance you can do a v twin with these cylinders? A 5400 cc motor might be fun 😜
@cedhome7945 I'll put it on the list. (Though V-Twins have been done to death really).
Жду с нетерпением первый выезд👍

Wiil we be seeing the bike on a rally field next year? Would be good to see it after following the build process
@@martinkaye1801definitely going to get a at rallies when it's finished. I'm hoping to ride it a fair bit, not a show pony for sure! However, I can't promise it'll be next year. 🤔

Torque monster
How are you going to fix the gearbox to their mounting plates ?
@@racertwo it's already bolted to the mounting plates..3 x Bolts each side around the radius/outer flange of the gearbox case. Not easy to see in the video but it's all solidly mounted.
@@StoneEng Sorry for the question, I thought the 3 bolts each side were temporary fixings before using much bigger bolts, you are going to be putting a lot of torque through that gearbox. This is a great project, I have rebuilt many aero engines over the years and respect the engineering, well done.
@@racertwo no problem asking any question. I could open the holes and fit bigger bolts, but there are 6 of them so I recon I'll be ok. Maybe 🤔
Mmm whisky. Nice chop.
Lovely. I would so cap that frame tube if there isn’t a good reason not to..
@@isickofit it's on the list to do something with it. Not sure what yet.
Fantastic progress. Don't you just want to run the engine now and then just to hear it?
@@firestorm755 so very tempting yes! But without any exhaust it's ear damagingly loud! (And it also takes a few people to get it running).

@@anonhunter5191 definitely and thank you. I'd seen the odd short video but this one's got more info. Best thing about it is that it's finished. Great effort.
I like the way you mix imperial and metric measures. Very cool project 👍👍
3/8" Whitworth?! Are you keeping the fasteners (and everything else?) imperial to stay in harmony with the old engine?
@@MidEngineering not particularly. It's a combination of getting the right thread pitch for steel into aluminium, and (most importantly) whatever tap we happen to have handy 😁
regarding the clutch release, would it be an advantage to have the lever angled so that the cable adjuster is located on the longest arm of the plate? (less of a sharp angle for the cable)
@@kathrynwhitby9799 possibly yes. I need to see where the cable is coming from (on the bike) and work out the best place for it.
@@StoneEng What about a circular disc with a groove around it's circumference and a cut out for the cable end nipple instead of the lever, it should make the cable path a bit easier ?
Tidy.
"In the meat...in the week"
Excellent work as usual, I love my shaper, I reckon having a shaper in your shed is like owning a plug in steam engine 👍
Hope that Chinese motor does the job.
Looking good
What oil do you coat everything with?
@@Iowa599 usually clean engine oil wiped in with a rag. WD40 doesn't seem to last as well. It needs to go on before the condensation hits though.
More progress, nice view of the shop.
My workshop is a brick built council estate garage, ply wood and felt roof, bloody hard concrete floor. Lovely and warm last week and my machines went brown. Having my lads daily ride bike in there, hanging in wet stuff doesn't help. Rubbed the brown off with a kitchen scourer, one of them that looks like a bundle of swarf. Then sprayed it all over with silicone grease. perhaps insulating the roof would help but the cold comes up through the floor. Loving this Hercules build, Wondering how you get a VIN
Got so tired of the seasonal surface rust , having my machine tools mostly in a pre cast concrete garage made it worse . Whilst on my stool of contemplation I decided to use GRIPFIL to secure 1”x2” battens and use the cheap ( then) ECO-wool.used a membrabpne and then some good old 1970,s Irish pine cladding . Bye bye rust , hello cheap to heat machine hole. Have a good Xmas with plenty of ale & motorcycle blether.when you get your shaper up and bumping a pint says you sit there hypnotised and just enjoy the machines old ness as opposed to doing something useful elsewhere in the shed 😎
I've got workshop envy ....loving the vids.
Lovely positive click into gear.
When you use the shaper, remember to cut against the fixed jaw of the vice or other clamp. It may be worth getting a reversed (?) jaw vice where the jaw that moves is opposite the handle - Mr Bob will know. (Cutting along the jaws can move the workpiece)
Thanks, good ad-vice 😂😂. The vice is just sat on the shaper table so it's got somewhere to live, it's not permanent.
@@StoneEng Abom 79 has a good channel featuring machine tools, including using a shaper.
@@kathrynwhitby9799 thanks, I'll check it out.
@@StoneEng you're welcome
Just an observation, will you fit some seals on the selector shaft that goes to the outside ? I guess if not oil will leak from them and moist could get in... Maybe this is not an issue if this project bike will not really be driven any distance or in not ideal weather :D
No seal on the selector shaft. It's well above the oil level and a snug fit, so I'm not expecting it to be a problem. Where we live every day is inclement weather 😁
Instead of a single tube to hold the tail light, have two tubes in a V shape with the point to the light, sturdier and a little elegant
Holy crap , do you have a machine shop to lust after 😃 !
@@peterfowler8044 sort of. The machines are all old, manual and in imperial measurement. You couldn't run a business with any of it, but we do love the old machines and with a bit of patience - they still do the job. 💪
Awesome! Love seeing the new progress!! Always fun to see any new news from your garage !!
what rules and regulations?? just buy a logbook for a 125 and tell ya insurance about the mods
Looks like you need heat in the garage and keep the moisture under control
@@rottweiler9535 given the lack of insulation and the 1" gap around the doors, I don't have budget for that!
