Don’t know if they did the actual switch like you said just prior to third rail ending east of Mt. Vernon East. Most likely the switch was just outside of the 96th Street Portal. The P32AC-DM’s were designed for that purpose. On very rare occasions do these engines stay on third rail power especially if there is an issue starting up the diesel power. Their successors in the Siemens Chargers will keep the engines on electric mode up to the end of third rail territory. Another question to ask you is do you know what engine was leading that consist?

If you follow the tracks one mile north (so the opposite direction the train is going), you can find a little service facility and wye where they turn the trains around. The cross streets are St. Julian Street and Maltby Avenue, in Norfolk.

Just saw the timestamp for this video. Does it really take almost four hours to get their by train??? That's unacceptably slow.

It has been a pleasure throughout, the many.years of Amtrak travel, itself. Never did the Southwest Chief yet, via LA. But the past videos of those Amtrak, travels are intriguing. Because a passenger gets to sleep, in a bedroom. With an in-room shower & bathroom. What a blessing! Great accomodations etc. A hotel on wheels. Smile. Long distance rail travel is amazing. Scenic in seeing the sights. Passing through the different cities. I'd like to embark on that opportunity, in experiencing it all one day soon.
