How To Paint a Mobile Antenna
I had three antennas on my vehicle that were chrome and bare steel. I wanted them to match the color of my black car, so I decided to paint them. This is how I accomplished this project.

    I don't understand 1 thing here, so help me out. As this antenna is typed as a Ground plane antenna (as a lot 1/4 wave verticals are) I don't get what are you using for the ground plane? Otherwise you would need radials.

    In my case, the 'shack' is 2nd floor, diagonally opposite the building electrical ground. Running a cable to that home ground would be about 80' minimum. So you are saying that I can drop a rod on the corner of the house that the shack is at?

    Nice video.... I ran all my cable in burried conduit with lighning arresters at the base of the antennas. The arresters are connected with braided cable to a nearby ground rod. I also installed a ground rod within a few feet of the shack for equipment ground. I did not connect the shack or arrester grounds to the utility ground. I consider the utility ground a safey ground. The ground is in common with your neighbors and POCO. That said; you or your neighbor could have a malfunctioning water heater (shorted element to ground) and not even know it. That kind of short would place a whole bunch of noise and current on the the utility ground. IMHO: I like to keep my shack "technical ground" seperate from the utility. Three wire power cords to power supplies are never isolated from the utility ground. Radios, tuners switches and arresters are connected to the "technical ground". (isolated from utility). I am itching to connect my "technical ground" to the utility ground and measure the current between the grounds with a clamp on amp-probe. Fricken high bandwidth amp-probe is north of $5K.

    I do have a limited space and that's the reason why I bought one the problem is that this antenna is complete deaf, the SWR is good on all bands, except 80 meters, but if I can't listening nobody I can't transmit. So I decide to remove it from my roof.

    Another single element antenna with a *_”magic black box”_* at the bottom that matches all bands. What sort of electronic wizardry might be in that box? (Other than a resin-potted dummy load?) I would think that by now someone would have reverse-engineered this and similar antennas and come up with a DIY clone … Is it a _”random wire monopole”?_ *73 de AF6AS*

    Thinking about picking up this radio but I have a quick question. Can you use a stylist on the touch screen? I have really fat fingers and I'm afraid the small touch screen maybe too difficult to operate for things like using the keyboard to nave your frequencies.

    Sometimes you want to keep the color scheme of your vehicle; with me, this was my goal. I took three Motorola antennas with chrome lock-nuts and painted them black to match my vehicle's color. It is not a difficult procedure, but make sure you use paint that is metal-free.

    • @ronaldlevans
      @ronaldlevans หลายเดือนก่อน

      Stephen, wondering how you determined your paints were "metal-free." That super long list of ingredients on all the cans in the store is intimidating. Maybe I need to take a large magnifying glass in the store and spend some laborious time "in research," hi. My task is to tame the shiny aluminum on a couple of antennas to make them more stealth...to next door neighbors, and the HOA!

    • @peteranoia4570
      @peteranoia4570 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

       The Krylon black is metal-free per the SDS. However, it does contain carbon black, which is electrically conductive, but is no more than 1% by mass. I doubt it has any effect on performance as the whip is solid steel.... Of course, proof is in the pudding, and I hope Steve can confirm.

    I get 1.3-1.5:1 across all bands, running RG8 coax. 250 watts? You don’t need it. I have made contacts all over the US & Canada, as well as Europe on 100 watts or less. 35 ft above ground? I’m a little less than 3 feet AGL.

    Love RT Systems software! Their support is also first class. Like your spreadsheet method. Will do that on my upload.

    • @ScottStratmoen
      @ScottStratmoen 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Tried the spreadsheet import on the MacOS version of the software and it silently fails. And if that was the only problem with the MacOS version I would be hopeful that their support would be a path to resolution. But I'm on my sixth long email to RT-Systems support email address documenting a very long list of bugs and omissions. And to think I paid $25 for something that is costing my far more money to document their problems. Perhaps the Windows code is far better, but I'm stuck with their MacOS version that in the end is basically far far worse than Yaesu's software.

    Switzerland is wet ! Lots of rain this spring with flooding in areas. Last year was quite the opposite. Yes, although I do love the Kenwood brand, I am leaning towards getting the Icom and just needed an excuse to make that final decision. Excuse provided !😂 It would have been nice to have the APRS but as you say, there is no perfect radio. I travelled to the US a lot professionally as well as for pleasure, always loved being there. You have pretty much everything ! Thanks again and keep making those great videos.

    Hi Steve, greetings from Switzerland. Enjoying your videos on the Icom ID 52 and the Kenwood D75. Just got my licence a week ago and looking to get set up. Would love to have your feelings about these two radios (id52 and D75) like if you had to choose between one or the other ?? Cheers and 73’s, John HB9 IMG

    • @K4SRF
      @K4SRF 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Firstly, how is everything in Switzerland? I have visited this beautiful country when I was a child, (back in the 1960s) and actually got to have skied in the Alps! (Thanks for stirring up such good memories!) Secondly, the selection between the two radios is a personal decision; I have both. They are both about the same price and equal in quality, (in my opinion.) The only difference that stand out with me has to do with the battery power. I have had the ICOM turned on for over 24 hours, (monitoring) with significant battery power loss. However, the Kenwood D-75 still has an issue with the battery draining at a faster level. Also, the Kenwood will automatically power down after a set time and there is no way that I know of to override this setting. This is a "battery saving" function that, if you aren't paying attention, (the radio will start beeping,) will shut the radio off without you knowing it. Both are fine radios, but if battery life between charges is important, I would lean toward the ICOM. -Regards! Steve

    They say not to have any wires run parallel past the surge arrestors. They worry that the non-arrested wires flashover to the "protected" lines. They make surge arrestor boxes you can run remote/control type wires through (terminal style, for single conductord or non-coaxial lines). I have one that's 4 wires in, 4 wires out, but they likely make larger ones.

    Grounding for lightning strikes is useless. If you get a close hit, the voltage/current will roar up the ground to your gear. I was the project engineer for the installation of outside plant and switch at Mt Cook, bought into service Dec 1969. The latest type of lightening protection was used. A severe electrical storm in April 1970 completely destroyed all plant, completely destroying the specially earthed switch. $250,000 gear gone!!!
