How to Paint Your Oak Cabinets: DIY Edition
Are you tired of your cabinets? Instead of spending a fortune on replacements, why not give them a fresh, new look? Also If you do it yourself you will save a fortune! In the TH-cam video, below we'll show you how to achieve a nice finish using Sherwin-Williams White Pigmented Shellac Primer and Emerald Urethane for the top coats. Here’s a sneak peek at the process.
Step-by-Step Guide to Painting Your Cabinets:
Prep Your Space: Before you start, ensure your workspace is well-ventilated and protected. Lay down drop cloths and remove cabinet doors and hardware. Set up a space to paint your doors. A garage or carport will work great! Just remember this is a dusty process. So wear that mask! Clean the surfaces thoroughly to remove any grease or grime. We like using Krud Kutter
Sanding: Start by sanding the sheen off the old varnish. You don't need to sand down to raw wood; just make sure there is no glossy surface left. This step is crucial for ensuring the primer adheres properly. Rember, Nothing sticks to dust or grease.
Prime with Shellac Primer: Next, brush or roll (or both) your Shellac Primer. This primer is excellent for blocking stains and providing a smooth base for your paint. Once the primer is dry, sand it lightly to smooth out any imperfections.
Apply Emerald Urethane: Now it's time for the finish coats. Apply two coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next. This product provides a durable, long-lasting finish that will withstand daily use. If you need to sand your first coat to get out any imperfections do this after your first coat.
Reassemble Your Cabinets: After the final coat is dry. At least 24 hours, reattach the hardware and doors., adding a fresh touch of color to your kitchen or bathroom.
Important Considerations:
Cabinet Quality: We don’t recommend this process for really nice cabinets that you want to keep for a very long time. This DIY method is best for older or lower-quality cabinets that need a facelift.
Professional vs. DIY: This is not the same paint or process we use for painting cabinets professionally. If you are considering having your cabinets professionally painted, we recommend using catalyzed specialized cabinet coatings like Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series. These coatings provide a more durable and long-lasting finish suitable for high-end cabinetry.
Why This DIY Project is Worth It: Painting your cabinets is a much cheaper way to breathe new life into your kitchen. If you’re thinking of replacing your cabinets in a few years, this is a great way to make them look good in the meantime without breaking the bank.
Watch the Full Tutorial: For a detailed step-by-step visual guide, check out our full video on TH-cam. We’ll walk you through each stage of the process, sharing tips and tricks to ensure a flawless finish. Conclusion: Refinishing your cabinets is a rewarding project that can significantly enhance the look of your home. With the right products and a bit of elbow grease, you can achieve professional results without the professional price tag. Give it a try, and let us know how it turns out. Happy painting!

What solvent do you use to clean out sprayer for the gallery and crosslink? Also can I use my airless sprayer?
How bout including touch up and finish repair ease and issues in your testing? I have over 50 years in the spec home and remodel industry and my isuues were usually appliace replacement damage or candle burning damage. 2k has to be more difficult to repair than pre cat! Good work.
PPG breakthrough or cabinet coat would’ve been better emerald urethane takes over a month to get hard and even then it’s still soft in comparison. Multi surface acrylic would’ve been the better diy option gotta be good with the brush tho or just mix products to get the flow.
Thanks for the very enlightening video, as I was about to pull the trigger on the Renner 2k product. I'll have to reach out to my SW dealer and see if he can get me some of the crosslinker (pricing is much better for the Gallery Series with a Pro account). Using SW is MUCH more convenient because they are local, getting Renner gets expensive with the shipping.
11 1 more is 12. Egg head. Purple egg plant and a Yellow sweater is opposite ends of the Color Wheel? Opposites attract! Flowers by Walmart? They were Sunflower 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻's one year.
no Exterior Latex Wood Primer?
Not in this one. More to come though!
Looks good
Thank you!
Benjamin moore advance can be brushed perfectly
Yup. Great trim paint
I loved you in Dashboard Confessional
I know that a lot of people will use UV curing for waterbased products like Renner or Envirolak. Would that be an option of the Hollandlac paint? If so I wonder if anybody has tried that....
Wouldn't think so. It being an oil. But maybe. One of the reasons oil is good is because it takes so long to dry. But maybe something worth checking out
Thank you for all this information!
Glad it was helpful!
Aura is crap. It sags and cuts poorly.
Interesting. We haven't had that experience but it is wild how different paints perform differently in different climate's and in different systems. Our go to from Ben is Regal Select but def. love the Aura as an upgrade but I will agree it can be a little less workable than Regal Select
@@caldwellpainting I also prefer regal select for exterior… preferably dark colours. Rolls well. Cuts nice. Selling a “Blue Note” (2129-30) exterior in Regal as we speak
I understand these samples are about 2 months old? What about cabinets that are less than 2 weeks old? How long does it take both of these to cure?
Both of them you can put back into service 24 hours after painting. Renner would honestly be ready about 4 hours after painting when using the catalyst. The main reason i made mention of them being 2 months old was just to be clear that there was way more than enough time for both coatings to be fully setup. Great question!
What are people paying for Gallery? I think it lists for $143 - maybe you can find it from $75-120 depending on how lucky you are. anything over $90 seems way too much, rather go 2k
It SW so who kows what everyone is paying. However for cabinets your probably only at 2 maybe 3 gallons for a huge kitchen. So if its an extra 90 bucks for the total job for a much better product I would think its a no brainier.
You should differentiante between exterior or interior paints
great idea!
Does Romabio masonry need a primer or do I need to do two coats. I'm in Texas!
So if its going over raw brick then no. But yes it will need at least 2 coats
BM regal paint is $85 a gallon... who in their right mind would pay that much for a single gallon?!
It's crazy to think, but honestly paint keeps going up from there. Farrow and Ball is about $130 and Fine Paints of Europe is over $200 a gallon
Just fyi I can't see any of the resulting finishes, or intermediate steps. I think the camera has to be placed @6 inches from the work surface, or edit-in still photos of each step, or link to high-def still photos. The video quality on youtube seems to be extremely poor for showing detail like that; it feels like I'm watching at 480-720p, even with the quality turned up higher, & using a good 15" laptop screen.
I know. It can be very frustrating at times. Especially in our trade
best 1k paint/primer for raw MDF?
So we really like the Renner M083. Great 1k Primer
Im confused. How can I find out if I can buy 1k paint locally? There's a sherwood williams and benjamin moore here. I use bm advance right now for cabinets. Is that considered a 1k paint? If I have a color code for a benjamin moore paint, can that be mixed as a "1k paint" Im having trouble googling what 1k paint is exactly and who sells and mixes it.
So think of 1k as a one part paint. You don't mix a cross-linker or catalyst in a 1k. So BM advance in this case would be considered a 1k. A 2k paint would be a paint that you add a catalyst to like Renner or Gallery series. This addative will make the paint cure harder and be more chemical resistant. However both Renner and Gallery series can be used as a 1k. Which means you dont have to add anything to the paint. Hope this answers your question.
@@caldwellpainting thanks that does clarify things!
Advance on cabinets omg advance takes 16 hours to reshoot
@@Skabanis 99% of my work is BM paints. Advance is what BM recommends for cabinets. Have you had better luck with something else ?
U left out Sherwin Williams Emerald
Also a great paint

Going to paint oak kitchen cabinets but also fill the grain. Right now they are stained and nicely varnished. I got 2 diff answers from SW on how to go about this. 1) Just clean well with krud kutter, NO sanding, apply the extreme bond, then fill grain, then sand, then apply BIN shellac. 2) clean well with krud kutter, NO sanding, apply extreme bond, then fill grain, then sand, then apply the extreme bond again. I’m concerned if I sand too much after the grain filling that I’d end up with tannin bleed with just the extreme bond. Also am concerned that with no sanding before applying the extreme bond after just cleaning them that I’d end up with peeling. Please help :). Any advice/opinion would be greatly appreciated.
Great question. SO We use a grain filler called Aqua coat we apply it with plastic putty knives. If you get the white Aqua coat it will help some with tannin bleed. I would sand first before using the Aqua Coat. No need to go down to new wood but definitely need to knock the sheen off. Then a quick sand after the Aqua coat. I know some products say no need to sand but We always do. (for a reason). So if you are Very concerned with tannin bleed and are going a white or very light color check out General Finishes (can purchase online. Not a SW product) stain Blocker white primer. It's honestly the best stain blocker I have ever used. Then Go over that with extreme bond or problock then to your finish coat. IMO I never like the idea of not sanding. I have seen that fail way to many times especially on cabinets. What paint are you using?
@@caldwellpainting Thank you so much, and I’m using SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.
That Process will work great with EU
I used Renner 851 with both Cross Linker and Catalyst, it is NOT chemical resistant against Acetone and Denatured Alcohol. In addition, Renner catalyst is better than the Cross Linker. As a 1K, Renner 851 is not as good as Evo from Gemini, in my opinion. Thank you for the review, i will try Gallery for my home project.
I was surprised by the result! I was also surprised by the number of people who didn't believe me though LOL!
Let's go Behr
sure does, i get that stuff at the dollar store. its like 2 bucks for 5 gallons. works great
what is the difference between regal select and arura?
So Aura has a higher solid content and is more scrubable. Think of Aura as a paint that drys with a clear coat over the top for an extra layer of protection
It would be interesting to see in a refinish scenario clear 2k isolante shot as the primer and then crosslinked gallery series and how it holds up.
hmmm.... That would be interesting. Could be the ticket!
What about Sherwood white vinyl sealer P63W2?
Good primer! We tried to keep this one a little more generic DIYish friendly
Awesome video 🙌🏼 Have you guys done any testing without the crosslinker? I shot gallery series on some kitchen cabinets last week. It was the third time using it and The more I use it, the more I like it. this video has really answered a lot of my questions. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for saying that! Unfortunately we have not done any testing without the crosslinker yet
What never heard of that one
Cool right!?
Is there a cleaning product you’d suggest for pressure washing algae off a retaining wall - ideally something you can get on Amazon?
So typically just a little bleach and water will take care of it. You can buy Some house wash Home Depot or Lowes as well that will attach to the end of a house that work great too.
@@caldwellpainting thanks!!
How about a primer and a paint for a cinder block outdoor shower?
Loxon Primer / Loxon XP. SHould work great for you!
@@caldwellpainting thanks!!!

I’m doing almost all of the walls in my 48x48 shop (with 20 ft having enclosed mezzanine and several rooms under) with 3/4 inch sanded ply and BM Command. I’m in love with Command. Needs sprayed though. I’m finding no primer is needed. I can make it look like cabinetry if desired (doing this is certain spots, lot of it will be covered with shelving, Omniwall and cabinets though). Needs sprayed with fine finish tips though for that level.
Thats awesome! its a great product!
Holy shit really 1200 a room? Ive seriously been under cutting myself lol
Honestly, alot of painters do. A quick reference is you want your material cost to be about 10-20% of the total job price on Residential repaint's. Everything changes for new construction and commercial though.
@@caldwellpainting I realize that about material cost. I reckon if you have a massive living or kitchen 1200 could be a bid. But for the rooms I've done there no where near a 1200 job
Well if your doing 2 gallons of Ben Moore Aura or Sherwin Williams Emerald, and glassing out those walls and primer... Well you got yourself a high end / expensive paint job. And this doesnt even begin to jump into the Fine Paints of Europe stuff. Ive seen full dinning rooms go for 30k. ofcourse thats not walls only.
Please post a video on painting exterior metal siding and what kind of paint do you use for it and why
Great Question! So you can use a ProCryl, SherCryl combo from SW. However that maybe over kill. Most paints on a prefinishes Metal siding will be fine. Ben Moore Regal select, Sherwin WIlliams Emerald / Super paint will work just fine. Check The data sheet on their websites for to verify what paint you choose. Also make sure if there is a current coating on the surface to find out what the coating is. ie. oil or latex
What is the warranty on the paint? Will it last 10 years before start to peel?
So Masonry Flat doesnt peel. Its a different type of coating than latex paints. However, over time it can wear thin in areas that get alot of water.
What gun and tip size was this sprayed with. Sherwin recommend 1.4-1.8 compressor style.
Both where shot with a 1.6
I like advanced paint through a harbor freight purple gun. Just thin it 5%
Great video. I always thought is was just me that loved S-W resilience. I don’t get the duration stuff either. The interior stuff always feels like sand to me.
Such great explanations, so helpful! Unfortunately, my contractor has no clue…. 😢
Sorry to hear that
@@caldwellpainting I bought BM Regal Select, and that’s going great! I’m looking forward to seeing the second coat this week. 😅
Did anyone count how many uhms
Trying to get better at it. Uhm just still feel kinda awkward in front of the camera. Hopefully there will be fewer soon
I have 50 years in that trade and the surgical scars to prove it, but I always bought my own paint because I was very very particular about using only Sherwin-Williams
Thats awesome! True tradsman
Which primer is best to use with the Sherwin Emerald?
Depends on the surface you are wanting the paint to bond to. Pro Block from Sherwin Williams is a great all around for EU. Just do a small section on the back of a door, wait a day then give it the scratch test. If you cant scratch it off then you are good to go!
When painting metal its a given prep is key. I have found marine paints to be superior. Two part urethanes seem to hold up very well but take a bit of experience in application.
Agree 100%
Had you ever used a primer known as XIM
YUP! Great primer
Usually cheaper paint costs more in labor to make it work. I stick with select, it works, I can apply it faster just by being more familiar with the product.
so true
