  • This blog is all about primers. Sherwin Williams primers to be specific. Primers are essential for a solid paint job, and Sherwin Williams offers a range of options to meet different needs. Lets address the most common questions you may have about shellac primer, extreme bond primer, peel bonding primer, and multi-surface primer.
    1. What is Shellac Primer and When do I need it?
Shellac primer is known for its excellent stain-blocking properties. It's perfect for sealing in tough stains like water, smoke, and tannin bleed (That brown or red hue, that keeps showing through)
    Common Questions:
Can shellac primer be used on all surfaces?
Shellac primer is versatile but works best on wood, metal, and plaster. It's not recommended for plastic or surfaces prone to high moisture. It can crack if applied to thick. It also is recommended for interior paint projects.
How does shellac primer compare to other primers?
It dries quickly and provides excellent adhesion, making it ideal for spot priming and sealing odors. However, it can be more challenging to clean up due to its alcohol base. So wont clean up with water.
    2. What Makes Extreme Bond Primer so "EXTREME"?
Extreme Bond Primer is designed for hard-to-stick surfaces. It's perfect for slick, glossy surfaces and tough-to-paint materials.
    Common Questions:
What surfaces can I use Extreme Bond Primer on?
This primer works well on surfaces like PVC, vinyl, tile, glass, and previously painted surfaces.
Do I need to sand before using Extreme Bond Primer?
In many cases, sanding is not required (but a quick scuff never hurt. It's always good practice to clean the surface before though. Nothing sticks to dust, or grease.
    3. How Does Peel Bonding Primer Help with Peeling Paint?
Peel Bonding Primer is a lifesaver for surfaces with peeling or cracking paint. It helps to smooth and fill in rough areas, creating a stable surface for topcoats.
    Common Questions:
Can Peel Bonding Primer be used on all peeling surfaces?
It's best for exterior wood and masonry. For extensive peeling, scraping and sanding will still be necessary for best results. If the paint is loose then its got to come off.
How effective is it at preventing future peeling?
While it helps to stabilize the surface and improve adhesion, proper surface preparation is key to preventing future issues.
    4. What is Multi-Surface Primer and Why is it Versatile?
Multi-Surface Primer is a go-to for those needing a versatile, all-in-one solution. It adheres to a wide range of surfaces and provides excellent coverage.
    Common Questions:
What surfaces can I use Multi-Surface Primer on?
It's great for drywall, wood, masonry, and even metal. Its versatility makes it a convenient choice for many projects.
Does Multi-Surface Primer require multiple coats?
Typically, one coat is sufficient, but heavily stained or porous surfaces may benefit from a second coat.
    Conclusion:
The right primer is crucial for a successful paint job. Whether you need the stain-blocking power of shellac primer, the adhesion of extreme bond primer, the smoothing effect of peel bonding primer, or the versatility of multi-surface primer, Sherwin-Williams has you covered. What Primer would you use for a Lifetime Resin Shed? I have a lot of left-over white latex waterbased exterior paint (not good for plastic I imagine) to use on the shed but need the right primer, no idea which one.

Going to paint oak kitchen cabinets but also fill the grain. Right now they are stained and nicely varnished. I got 2 diff answers from SW on how to go about this. 1) Just clean well with krud kutter, NO sanding, apply the extreme bond, then fill grain, then sand, then apply BIN shellac. 2) clean well with krud kutter, NO sanding, apply extreme bond, then fill grain, then sand, then apply the extreme bond again.
I’m concerned if I sand too much after the grain filling that I’d end up with tannin bleed with just the extreme bond. Also am concerned that with no sanding before applying the extreme bond after just cleaning them that I’d end up with peeling. Please help :). Any advice/opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Great question. SO We use a grain filler called Aqua coat we apply it with plastic putty knives. If you get the white Aqua coat it will help some with tannin bleed. I would sand first before using the Aqua Coat. No need to go down to new wood but definitely need to knock the sheen off. Then a quick sand after the Aqua coat. I know some products say no need to sand but We always do. (for a reason). So if you are Very concerned with tannin bleed and are going a white or very light color check out General Finishes (can purchase online. Not a SW product) stain Blocker white primer. It's honestly the best stain blocker I have ever used. Then Go over that with extreme bond or problock then to your finish coat. IMO I never like the idea of not sanding. I have seen that fail way to many times especially on cabinets. What paint are you using?

Hi, I used Solo semi-gloss latex paint from SW on doors that were previously painted with latex paint. After sanding with 220 grit and cleaning, I applied two light coats, but the paint is peeling from the doors. I might use Peel Stop or a peel bonding primer now. What can I do to prevent this from happening again? Will a multi-purpose latex primer help over latex paint in the future? Thank you!

If all those variable are correct then i dont think you should have any peeling. I would 1 test to make sure the paint you are painting over is infact latex and not oil and 2 make sure the paint is degreesed. Also chech the TDS sheet to make sure sanding at 220 isnt to fine of a finish. Wouldnt think it would be but maybe double check that

Oh my. From what I’m hearing my local paint stores don’t know what they are doing. My Benjamin Moore store sold me Ultra Spec 500 for a highly used end table. My Sherwin Williams store sold me Extreme Bond primer for my end table. I was just painting over a neutral color paint. My table looks like junk! Horrible. I used new Purdy brushes and really took my time. Brush strokes are all over. I made sure I didn’t use too much paint on each coat. Very disappointed.
