Didn't he die before his heresy trial concluded?
Yes he did
WOW THIS IS SUCH A AWESOME CHANNEL! I wish i found you sooner!! Thankyou so much!
Thanks!! I really appreciate it 😁
After looking at your facebook page, I realize my last posting was rather blunt and reckless. :( My apology! Please disregard it, except for Nicolas of Cusa, I believe, he is another weighty mystic that holds the key to integrate and reconcile a dualistic and fragmented world at war.
No worries! It took me a bit to even see what post you were talking about. Cusanus is another beautiful mind. I look forward to doing more with him on this channel. I like him more every time I read him
A brilliant metaphor to illustrate "Master Eggheart"s point!
Thanks!!
Reminds me of Ramana Maharshi.... 1. Is hell real? 2. Who wants to know? 1. I do....... 2. And, who are you? ........silence. 'Nothing in the universe resembles God more than silence' shhhhhhh.... :) I enjoy your talks
Thanks! Yes, I’ve heard people suggest a connection between them. Silence, ultimately, is a singular thing that doesn’t point to any distinctions. Cyprian Smith has my favorite comments on this with Eckhart
I understand that you know a great deal more about Eckhart (and probably most things) than I do, but through you, I really do get a sense of the magnificent teachings that Eckhart has given us. Although my first 50 years were spent looking at Eastern religions, I get a strong feeling 'coming home' as I listen to you and how you explain these ideas. It so helps me as I then delve into the actual sermons and lectures. Should 'I' (?) ever awaken, get to heaven, or whatever, I have to thank you because you have been such a tremendous source of help and inspiration - even if we do disagree about which image to use to represent Eckhart! Thank you so much.
I had to smile as I read this. Thank you!! I do wish we had a better picture to use for Eckhart. That one has so much of his personality. But ultimately, it’s not him. I wish we had the same kind of image that we have for Cusanus
@@goodtothinkwith Personally, I think the death mask image that you show on your pages is a better representation - but that's just my own bias of how I want to see him. A very kind and basically 'normal' image - not the dour image of Fra Teodoro. But, that's just me - it certainly doesn't stop me appreciated your lectures and admiring your understanding. I love the way you can explain some of the nuances of MHG - I just about cope with normal English!
Great analogy ❤.
Thanks!
as soon as I hear the equivalent of, "...and no amount of critical analysis or thinking will help you..." I realise this is not for me
There are a lot of good things in life that are like that. French toast is only one of them.
Hugely appreciate your approach to philosophy. I had a totally unsubstantiated thought that stuck with me when you spoke of Anaximander - that all substance emerges from and returns to the same boundlessness - is that not verifiable in terms of the strange empirics of quantum physics, namely how quarks, the things that make up atoms, are almost virtual, flashing in and out of existence?
Ah yes! That’s part of the beauty of his idea. It’s mythological, but also very familiar and strangely close to modern physical theory
‘ Virtues are formed in man by his doing the right actions ‘ says Aristotle, but Eckhart correctly identifies that we should not first ask what we should do , but rather who we should be . That is the pivotal question / choice to be made .As Richard Rohr says , ‘ When you get your ‘ Who am I ?’ question right , all of your ‘ What should I do?’ questions, tend to take care of themselves ‘ . Faith tells Christians who they are , confers identity ,and informs decisions and actions to follow ( +/- understanding) - if we are to be authentic ! We are God’s children, if and when we behold Jesus, as the Lamb of God . Identity provides purpose and meaning . You are right about the reading of scripture being read not for intellectual erudition, theological discourse , but rather to motivate/ animate us to action and thence to experience . As has been said ‘Faith is not an end in itself , but a kind of beauty - a raft that takes you from one place to another - to experience of / and union with God ‘ - the ground of Being . And it is a wonderful thing , even if only fleeting for me . Thanks .
You are quite right! In fact, I should have emphasized more that it’s not just asking us to *do* something, but to *be* differently. There’s just so much beauty in Eckhart.
Excellent! 👍
Many thanks!☺️
Faith is alwas what we know. It's may be our imagination our own theory to faith on something. Faith is just a mind game. But to understand something beyond mind, the mind should be silent a deep silence (where the mind desire nothing no anger, no jelousy, no anxiety ,no restlessness....) Mind in Nothingness - not a thing in the mind, the mind becomes free.
Master Egghart's recipe for French toast. No matter how erudite the video, my brain goes straight for the pun and forgets all else. 😞😞
🍳
excellent presentation! I would take it further and say that there's no distinction between "believe" versus "do" in the context of knowing God. in other words, for me to believe that Jesus is what He said He is, which is the Truth and the Life, it doesn't give me the intended meaning of those words. I may think I know what those words mean but its not what I think. but what belief does is allow God to do His part in me and make Himself known exactly as He declared Himself to be, which is only possible for each of us individually if we first believe! its. a two step process: we do the believing and the keeping of the words of Jesus and then God does the showing of Himself. its all laid out plainly in the words of Jesus.
Every true interpretation is a literal interpretation, you might say…
@goodtothinkwith honestly, I gave up all my interpretations just to allow God to make the words of Jesus real to me. it was worth it.
Brilliant. Thank you
You're very welcome!
I wish you were one of my professors. Your content and manner of communicating it makes my learning easier and enjoyable. Thank you, from Taiwan!
Thank you so much! That made me smile 😊
I have a question regarding Meister Eckhart. In the ‘Olivet Discourse’ (Matthew 24:1-35, Mark 13:1-37, and Luke 21:5-36) Jesus speaks on the end of times. He says one man will be taken and the other left behind. One man taken from the field and the other worker left behind. I am curious as to if Meister Eckhart mentioned these verses in any sermons and if so, what did he say about them? Did Eckhart have a view on any apocalyptic end, or rather is the end of the self and attachment the final judgment in a sense? If so, how do we reconcile these verses? Thank you.
Great question. Eckhart doesn’t really talk about end times in the apocalyptic sense. The ceaseless birth of the Word is happening at all moments. So there is no end of history. His take on renewal (which follows the destruction of the world in flood stories and apocalyptic myths generally) is related to “greening” where Christ is always new and “greening” like a new shoot of a plant
Many many thanks.
You’re quite welcome! 🤗

Many thanks!! 🙏🏻
This topic you brought up is very relevant to our times since so many believes and leaders believe so "literally" and "faithfully" that they missed the fundamental point of Christianity that is love. Christianity without love is no more. St. Paul pointed out outright, " When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things." 1 Corinthians 13:11 Thank you for your videos on many topics.
What an appropriate passage! Thank you for the kind words! I believe Eckhart would grin and agree
@@goodtothinkwith I donot mind if Eckhart would grin and agree or not, only if you do. :) If there is indeed a phenomena of quantum entanglement, it seems, in some fundamental levels of our thoughts or convictions, we are rightly entangled or resonated. If you are still a banchlor like Meister Eckhart, you could be the kind of guy I am interested in being "closely" associated with. Just kidding! F.g. My current concerned issues include the future of religions (i agree that negative theology is the key) , the accommodation of unity and multiplicities, polarization and reconciliation, interdependency and fragility of human souls, the beauty, the knighthood, and passion regarding faith according to Soren Kierkegaard, the importance of human solidarity in a nuclear age and climate change. It happens to be that, negative theology is what the ancient Chinese sages were good at. The paradox at play. The world today will need a revolutionary paradigm shift, mentally, philosophically, and spiritually, to accommodate the transition from a unipolar world to a multi-polar world. Another German mystic, Nicola of Cusa, would be a great mind for us postmodern to ponder upon and to think with. I do not find many good illustrative videos on his thoughts and writings. It could be potentially your next undertake of christian mystics. Or I could possibly join you in creating the next milestone of mystic walk. Many thanks to your endeavors on mystics and your smiles.
That’s very kind, thank you!☺️
15:22 That is a thoughtful observation. Having just finished Eliade's: the Sacred and the Profane, and having read Hannah's Sacred nature last week or so - I agree that they would both agree that we must re-enchant ourselves with the world and ourselves... *And each other.
Too many ads
Those are the TH-cam defaults, unfortunately.
For many, ‘the answers have been provided for you’ is still a very attractive option.
Perhaps a picture of this is in Ezekiel 47, when man is so emptied of self and filled with God it cannot but help but to flow back out of the inner sanctuary of Man into this world touching everything with the goodness of God for whichever and for wherever this river is sent. It does not miss its mark. It knows its appointed work.
That is a beautiful passage that seems to directly address the metaphysics of flow that Eckhart loved so much
Thanks!
Thank you!! 😄
Greetings from Croatia...good Work Sir 👌

Nice to hear and see You👌

I read Aquinas stating that his straw comment about his writings after a presumed epiphany was commentary on the inadequacy of words to capture the ineffable. To suggest Eckhart was not Christian is to come too close to saying the Beatitudes, for example, have no relevance. Would not the Beatitudes, for example, be instructional/confirming, at least in part, the perception of divine unity...how ever short the narrative might be to the direct experience? Can the experience of Divine Unity itself become an idol? Truly could any experience of God be complete and full? If the instruments of the faith are not useful how does one live during the dessert times when God seems in far off land, and these due occurr even for the mystic. Saying Eckhart was not Christian from a institutional Christian theology I understand. I think though it may cause more harm than good.

We have no choice but use paradigm we currently have as guide. Otherwise how can we decide anything?? But yes this debate is beyond scientific paradigm. It's more fundamental. A philosophical debate. Debate should be on topic like "Does Super-intelligence implies super-morality?" Anyways pessimistic view is rational view. When risk is this big. What if even we know in our paradigm that it's not dangerous but as paradigm shift we realize we were wrong. Would be too late by then. But counter point is this , aliens can land tomorrow. They also can be more intelligent then us. We will face same dillema . Isn't better to take risk with something we create? It's not like humanity will live forever. But if gamble with AI and it works we might have better chance dealing with other intelligences. We have to face this eventually.
We can’t help but to think in the current paradigm, yes. But we can be aware of the limitations instead of assuming them without being aware of the assumption… I agree, it is a philosophical discussion.. not something very “scientific” in the way people usually speak of
Haven't watched it all yet 'cos I'm about to go out, but Greek Buddha, Pyrrho's Encounter With Early Buddhism In Central Asia by Christopher I Beckwith is a good read. Apologies if I duplicate any information in the vid. Ataraxia!!! :)

Thank you so much! I can’t take credit for that story though. I first heard it from Campbell many years ago
mithra wasnt born on winter solstice he actually dies on that date and gets resurrected three days later bcos earth after three days rotates back to its spring orbit and on the first day of spring he comes as the saviour to save ppl from harshness of winter
The solstice is the 21st. Add three days and what day is it. December 25th.
@@DeadSoon1945 in iran when someone dies there is a ceremony three days after their death and it continues for forty days it clearly shows it was a mourning procession not a celebration on those dates
What about praying for others?
49:30 Interestingly the word "individual" means indivisible, so by separating ourselves out of the crowd, tribe or family we become more individualized yet also at one with God. We transcend the group soul for an individual soul indivisible from God.
mithra was born from a rock
Born from a rock, or born in a cave.
@ could’ve been
@@kristyknight0924 It's a big difference and I seem to recall one Jesus Christ being (re)born in a cave :-). Moreover, Apam Napat ("Mithras") is the son of Mithra-Anahita, whose name is translated as virgin-pure-Mithra (who was a goddess before she became conflated with her son, the world saviour who descends into the underworld and defeats death to rescue his mother and return the light to the world.) In the Iranian tradition, the god who was to become the "Mithras" in the Roman tradition was born of a virgin, Mithra, in a cave (tomb), rather than "a rock". Which must be the least charitable interpretation of the material that one could come up with. I'm not sure if it is intentional but Christian apologists never seem to give the whole story, or all the facts, and end up comparing the wrong things.
Very well said Dr Johnson. I would expect to hear more about Epikouros. A Greek friend, Nikephoros.
Thanks! Yes, I have a video already on Epicurus that you may want to check out. The next one will be on the Skeptics. After that, I want to do one on the philosophical environment I. Which Christianity arose in the Roman Empire. That’s the plan at least…
Always love seeing an upload from you 😁 As someone who lives in a society that has allowed individualism to be expressed to the extreme, it's wild to think of a time in which some of these philosophical revelations occurred in such a widespread way. What I wouldn't give to have conversations with some of these philosophers, but I'm extremely grateful we have their knowledge with us still.
Thank you so much! It’s nice to be doing it again. I have one crunching right now for next week on the Pyrrhonian Skeptics. I’ve often said that my first use case for real AI is to have coffee with Nietzsche in the morning. I’m still holding out hope that we’ll discover more of the lost ancient texts from this period in Heracleum. Philodemus was an Epicurean and should have been in conversation with the ancient Stoics and Skeptics after all…
@@goodtothinkwith Oh, I'll look forward to that. Pyrrho is a favourite of mine.
The big irony is those who are trying to revive Hellenistic polytheism and live its philosophy but with the Stoic self... trying to have their cake and eat it too.
