tier ranking reactions to the British Museum missing objects
Theft in the British Museum itself?! On 16th August 2023, the British Museum revealed that nearly two thousand of its precious items had been stolen. The twist? It was one of their own employees who had been selling them on eBay.
It didn't take long for the interenet to pick up on the irony. It delivered a fresh set of memes about the nineteenth-century looting, but this wasn't the only type of response. From curators and local museums to antiques dealers and far-right politicians, here is my tier ranking of all the memes and reactions to the news of the British Museum's internal thefts.

One of my pet peeves that I hear revolves around the statement at 7:40. The claim that “historical accuracy or authenticity does not matter in a work of fiction” can be damaging to not only the viewer but the general audience. Let’s be real here, most people learn about history through entertainment: especially movies and video games. These movies and games, wether intentional or by a mistake, can spread misinformation about a topic.

I wasn’t going to comment but by the end I had a lot to say. First of all I like the book and read it while I was learning about WW2 (although we didn’t cover the book in class). I understood it was fiction but found the whole situation interesting so it encouraged me to find out more about this part of history which I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. Secondly, I don’t think it’s supposed to be a historical account, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a useful tool in making school children interested in something that otherwise is abstract to them. Finally, as a science teacher there are lots of times we ask our students to think critically about the way we talk about concepts in the classroom. Even commonly accepted models are limited in depicting the depth or magnitude of reality. So if we can ask students to do that for science I don’t see any reason why they can’t apply those skills in History or English. On the whole, my take is that the book is great further reading for students who already know the history, and if teachers are planning to use it in the classroom they should be prepared to have a broader discussion about the characters, the plot points and the history. And none of that means that the book or film is in any way bad, or that the author has done something wrong by writing the novel in the first place. On the contrary, the writing is clever and he tells a story that resonates. The child-like innocence of the narrator and inaccurate terms like “pajamas” serve the story, it is up for the reader to correctly interpret those misunderstandings in the context of the history. And one part of the film I love is at the very end, when the family are sobbing for Bruno, the camera pans to show a room full of “striped pajamas” and the audience is left to realise that the tragedy was not the loss of one fictional German boy, but in truth it was absolute devastation to entire communities. If that message is too profound for children then perhaps this is not a children’s book/film, just a book/film from the perspective of a child.

The acting was phenomenal. This show needs to get picked up again before the actors are too old to play the parts. I hope it makes a come back real soon.🤞🤞

Pointless video, I do not think there is anyone in this world who watches this particular movie looking for historical accuracy, it's supposed to be a movie that shares a message, not a history lesson. And, who knows, the historical inaccuracy is probably because the movie is mainly from the perspective of a child, a child in a privileged position that was on the side that was not suffering the atrocities of the holocaust.

I can’t speak on the book or the author, but This film deeply impacted me in my childhood (I believe I was 12 or so at the time), and I treasure it immensely still. You and some of the commenters definitely make good points about the lack of historical accuracy, for example with everyone being so naive about what’s going on around them, the fact Bruno isn’t already indoctrinated into Nazi propaganda, no patrolling guards, etc. all of this can be misleading about what the camps and those who conducted them were like. However , I did not come away from the film thinking that the camps weren’t all that bad. It painted a pretty vivid picture about how terrible it was, and I think a lot of the horror also came from what Bruno (and us) don’t see. Watching the behind the scenes documentary it seems like there was a deep reverence for the subject matter from for all the cast and crew. I don’t think It’s censored or played down, just left unmentioned, because Shmuel can’t bring himself to talk about it. All he wants is to be a kid, and the only opportunity he has for that is with Bruno. The fact we saw things from the perspective of the perpetrators, for me, was a harsh cautionary lesson. It made me think a lot more about how much I look away from what my own country does, due to naivety, or willful ignorance. The ending of the film was especially haunting to me. I didn’t feel like we saw the parents cry just from the grief of losing their son. I think the performances showed an unsettling realization that only the loss of their son could have made them see their own monstrosity. Unfortunately in real life, I have pretty high doubts that a case like the one depicted in the story would even be enough for the perpetrators to realize anything at all. Probably would have just blamed the prisoners even more. Nevertheless I think the film is very powerful, and the child performances bring a lot of heart. But it should not be used to teach the facts of history, at least not without caveats.

Thank you very much for this video, I like Terry Deary and HH very much you have been intelligent in your argument in highlighting the books/shows' aim to re-teach History in a compelling, fin-but-with-purpose and engaging way that children (and adults!) can get into easily, enjoy and learn something, especially the bits 'they don't teach you at school'. I have read some of books and watched the show with my Son when he was younger and even though he's grown up now and I'm nearly 50 I still love HH, (I even know by heart with actions at least 30 of the songs and proud of it!) I could talk about it loads with joy but for the purposes of this comment I'm just going to say that I love the fact that they used a friendly character like Ratus Ratus to not only make little jokes at times about how daff and idiotic the Elite have been in many Countries over History but to encapsulate in a few words what was the History we have just watched and why it's important. Also if you have say more than one Child of differing ages, the old ones put it on after school with a younger pre-school age Sibling say, the little one isn't really going to understand what the silly men and ladies are doing but they are going to engage more with the silly friendly puppet .So I think he's an integral part of the show and he is needed for younger members and he's a key element in highlighting what is true or silly outlining what was fact from just comedy in that sketch.😊❤🗺📜📖📺🎶

I read the book and thot that it was very odd. Brunos parents would have raised him from birth to be aware of jews and to hate them. To let him be so innocent placed him in incredible danger. And Smuel was very aware of what was going on, yet he also placed Bruno in incredible danger. He too was portrayed as far too innocent in his given surroundings.

  • @lessormore001

This book takes a really strange perspective that makes me wonder what Gretel truly regrets: the Holocaust and her father's involvement in it, or her brother's death and the way she contributed to it. Somehow I noticed that she very rarely feels guilty about the Jews themselves. All her most emotional experiences involve memories with Bruno. The others aren't even close to that deep. Even what Gretel does at the end of the book is only to save another little boy and thus drown out her remorse after "killing" her brother. But yes, while Bruno's death seems to be Gretel's genuine regret, all the other deaths don't look like that anymore and it seems that she only thinks and says what other people demand from her. This makes me ask: if Germany won the war, would she still regret it? Or even if they still lost but Bruno survived, would she feel bad about what her father did? Because it looks like for this family everything that happened would be fine and Bruno's death is the only thing that disturbed this order, so in some unnatural way they try to erase him from their lives. It's strange enough that Gretel herself never wants to say her brother's name but it's even weirder when her mother does it. This reaction is completely unnatural and no mother would behave this way after losing a child. Yes, the memories are painful, but parents who have lost a child want to talk about it and remember it and they don't behave like as if this child had never existed and it was urgent to erase him from your life. It turns out, however, that this was the main problem for maintaining morality in this family, because Bruno's death constantly reminded them that they were involved in something wrong. However, if this death didn't happened, they would probably just ignore it and consider it an inconvenient fact of the past that isn't worth mentioning much.

Thus creating something we can name oriental bardcore, and if we add the fifths and fourths overuse in the vocal parts... Muah, chef kiss

This was a good, well written movie. It is sort of like crying now about current things. Example: Palestine conducts a massive terrorist attack on Israel..the Palestinians started it, and the Israelis will finish it. Much like 9/11, not much of a chance of intelligence failure as the Bush regime wanted to attack their client state of Iraq they started thinking for themselves. The Mossad had to have known but allowed it to happen. Frankly, if you are from a "state" inside the borders of a real state, it means nothing. The Palestinians are not welcomed in Israel so they should find a place they can really call home. Not this imaginary place they live.

The fact that it uses the murder of millions of innocents to push a "why can’t we all just be friends and get along" narrative is nothing short of horrific. And the end where Vera Farmiga is screaming in agony as her son dies always made me wonder: Does the movie want us to cry for the millions of people murdered or does it want us to cry about this one little German boy whose father literally carried out their tortures and executions?

She’s complaining about a fictional book not being completely accurate. She’s upset that a book meant to introduce children to the idea of human atrocities isn’t 100% accurate. It’s a woke view that any history about the mistreatment of a minority needs to be told in the most visceral and horrific way. And that children need to be subjected to stuff like this. I bet you 100% she would be okay with drag queen story time for pre schoolers. Her main point is that Bruno wouldn’t have been a real person cause all children of nazis, in her mind, were horrible viscous monsters. She’s so confident in her own bigoted views that she says for a fact there were “no Bruno’s but millions of shmules”. She’s so clouded by her own woke views she can’t humanize the child of a Nazi. I can gaurentee you there was at the very least ONE child of a Nazi that would have loved to play with any child including a Jew. There were many nazis that didn’t agree with everything hitler did including the treatment of Jews. The “loving and compassionate left” make things like this and don’t realize they are just as hateful and cold as the rest of us.

I never thought it was historically accurate I felt it was more about the principle and situation of the time.

Hear, hear. This book and movie are abominations, in their severe non-realism. They inject pure fiction (on super critical points) into this topic--which is utterly obscene and dangerous.
