NC 500 in a Triumph Stag

The NC500 is an iconic route around the North Coast of Scotland, measuring roughly 100 miles. I've never done it and John had never done it. So why not do it in a Triumph Stag? Just done this job on my Mk 7.5 Fiesta. Few tips if you’re attempting it. 1) Replace the Cam Cover gasket. after doing this job. It’s only c.£13 and your cam cover will leak oil down the back of the engine if you don’t. 2) It took me 4 attempts to get the plugs to seat properly so buy extras when picking them up. They’re only £1.25+vat each. Part No. 167490. 3) Instead of removing the wiper blades and cowling etc. just use a shallow socket and short extension. It allows for more room when chapping the plug down. 4) if using a chrome socket go for a 17mm. An 18mm socket will hit the sides and not seat the plug all the way. 4) Don’t drill the old plugs to release them. Chap down one of the sides and the old plug will spin until vertical. Then grab with a pair of needle nose and yank it out. Be careful not to push the plug all the way into the head. It’s a ball ache to get out. (Ask me how I know). 5) Change the spark plugs after doing the job to prevent misfires. I’m a pretty handy DIY mechanic but this job is heartbreaking. If the plugs aren’t completely seated they will leak. Even if it looks watertight when the coolant system is pressurised and the head expands when hot it will Leak. Just keep trying until you get a good seal. As above it took me 4 attempts. Some folk say to use Tigerseal around the mating surface between the plug and the head but the time I got it to seat properly I didn’t use any sealant. 6) Good luck. Hopefully you fare better than me.

    Great vid. I had had the auto in mine in and out many times from 93 to 2004, as was a high mileage car then (from 93 to 99 my only car) but converted the car to manual, and usually did the auto from underneath/using a pit. Installed the manual in 2004 ish, again using pit, but don't have pit anymore. Had engine out about 8 years ago, had manual box and clutch off then. Have a noise at front of Gbox, so about to possibly have to remove box again. Don't have a pit, so tossing up whether to do under car (remove box only) or whether to remove engine and gbox. Former I need someone to help lift box (getting old), but remove engine seems more work, but seeing I have engine hoist, I can do that on my own/with no help, (put it in on my own), so probably do that. But great vid. Even though I have done it a few times (had car since 93/done 330,000 kms in it), always handy to watch a vid and revisit/jog memory. Thanks!!!!!

    Hi Henry, at 16:47 there's a view of the exhaust clamp holding the centre and rear sections, mine just has a bog standard clamp holding those sections together and I have never been able to get the exhaust to pass centrally through the circular holes in the subframe. I've had to resort to packing out the holes with fireproof material to stop the exhaust knocking on the subframe. I see from the Rimmer's diagram that your clamps are the correct type with a whole host of washers and spacers. Do these clamps do anything other than clamp the exhaust sections together or do they in some way steady the exhaust? Congratulations on getting the job done, mine has a noisy bearing rattle that goes away when the clutch is depressed, one of those jobs to tackle when it finally gives up completely.

    Hey Henry, I too have just dismantled my (older type master cylinder according to Rimmer's diagram) and I was scratching my head as the spring came out before the primary seal and was the other way around as you found. With the cylinder off the car, and prior to dismantling, I was surprised to find that with the cylinder depressed I could 'blow' through the feed hole to the reservoir, I would have thought this should not be possible. I ordered a set of 'old type' seals including the primary 'cup' seal from Robsport and they sent the new seals despite their website image showing the early type. Their response was that the image needs updating and, what arrived, is all they now supply and the new seals work fine in the older cylinder. After complaining they refunded the cost of the seals but not their extortionate postage charge. Now waiting for the correct type to arrive from an eBay seller. Anyway thanks for your video, luckily my spring is OK so I'll see what happens when I put it back together as per the Rimmer's and Haynes diagrams.

    • @HenrysGarage
      @HenrysGarage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good luck with the eBay seals. I find RimmerBros expensive for both parts and postage but it almost always has the parts and they're easy to find on the website. Some others have websites where you think they don't want to .make sales

      @@HenrysGarage Concur here. I have had a lot of dodgy seals, and there are a lot around. On my Jag, I found clutch master and slave cyl were decent price, but seals leaked when I got the master. Ordered genuine "old school" seals in the genuine box, weren't expensive, so now perfect. I rebuilt the brake booster on the Jag, and that is also a semi (remote) master cyl config as well. Same thing, lots of cheap seals around, genuine seal kit not much more, and found them excellent. Easier just to buy that, as don't want to have to do it again. On my Stag, there were two slave cyls available that people supposedly use, ie two different bores. The larger bore has less travel, but less effort, wheras the small bore had more travel/needed more effort. I went with the less effort one, as there is only JUST enough travel, but the more travel one had the "slip point" right on the clutch spring "tipping point" that made it quite difficult to hold there/slip properly on take off. Each to their own. That washer on the pushrod shaft on the master cyl is normal. It isn't mentioned as a separate part, as it doesn't come off. Just a point on the manual pics (suck eggs I know), but often the parts lists are a better diagram to look at. They often show a better sequence in their exploded diagram, but have to be careful, as sometimes (enough to mention it) parts can be in wrong order/wrong way around. I find that the Stag books are pretty average, as by then, we were getting into that "replace higher assembly" age, wheras the sedan manauls were earlier, back when shops actually overhauled individual modules. So, while you have to read between the lines to make sure it WILL also apply to a Stag, often the sedan manuals will have ten pages relating to overhaul of a part, wheras the Stag one has a page if that for same section, because "just replace with exchange unit." I know the old sedan parts lists are far more extensive/actually tell you why/how/what. But (as an example) I have the April 78 parts list for the Stag, and that has "pre xxx/post xxx" for some parts. Go through the older Stag parts lists, and there are up to 4 or 5 variations in the earlier ones, wheras 78 one lists 2................... Now, if parts were everywhere, then fine, refine it down to 2. But if someone has the earlier 3 variations in stock, but NOT those "last two", then nice to know if that is ok/will fit. Of course, then have to find out what paired with/changed in sets, but earlier lists usually have clues. The fun of owning a Stag. While these are "fiddles", they have helped me keep my Stag on the road for 31 years and 421,000 kms (330,000 of those put on it by me). Love your videos. 🙂

    Just found your link and subscribed. Most informative indeed. I'm a long MGB fan from the 1980s, but over the years have owned many other Brit classics etc and only recently have bought another MGB GT after 36 odd years. It's a 1967 model I owned 36 years ago - yes it's the very same GT I sold in 1988. I found it purely by chance on an online site 4 sale last April, and its still in lovely condition. Your vid will help with its maintenance.

      I'm glad you find them useful. Look up university motors for lots of MGB content. I tried to find my original TR7 but have been unable to track it down

    Hi Henry, nice update, shame about the handbrake handle. I was wondering a few times how yu were getting on. Did the MG sell?

    • @HenrysGarage
      @HenrysGarage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Chris, yeah, it sold but for rather less than I hoped. The Aussie that bought it reckoned he got a great deal. Handbrake was interesting to realise how it worked.

      @@HenrysGarage I did feel for you seeing you try and work out what was happening. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but seeing all the crud around the button etc a good soaking may have made the difference, do you have an ultrasonic bath?

    • @HenrysGarage
      @HenrysGarage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I have an ultrasonic but I did clean the button up pretty well. The issue is the lever is over extending slightly because the button is going in too far and that's why it gets stuck. Gentle on the button or put something in the tube to stop that are the solutions

    Hey Henry, I didn't realise you were so close. I'm just up the road in Llantwit Major. If my wife would let me have another B I'd snap your arm off for this one. But she's put her foot down.
