Kiandra to Kosciuszko: An AAWT Adventure (New South Wales) - Episode 3: Whites River to Kosciuszko
Considered one of the best sections of the Australia Alps Walking Track, Kiandra to Kosciuszko explores the New South Wales high country from the abandoned gold mining town of Kiandra to Mount Kosciuszko - the highest peak on the Australian mainland. Traversing alpine grasslands past towering peaks, snow gum forests, creeks and historic huts, this is a iconic multi-day in the Australian high country.

Great video How heavy were your packs for that distance ?
@@123jackaroo123 we were all under 18 kgs. We were under the weight limit for Par Avion’s flight out. I was carrying about 4kg of camera equipment so probably could have got it under 14kgs
The acknowledgement of county statement is empty and unnecessary and most Aboriginal people are quietly annoyed with its ubiquitious use by people who care little about the realities of Aboriginal Australia.
@@tommyslavic898 thanks for taking the time to make your comment :)
Nice work. Sensible compromise given the weather. The background music is nicely integrated into the video. Thanks for shsring your walk.
Thanks for watching. Yes, it was unfortunate about the Rolling Ground but had to be done given the conditions. I will be back to get that Rolling Ground adventure some other time though!
So fabulous to witness this walk through your own eyes Don. Brings back wonderful memories. Thanks so much for filming, editing & sharing them with us all☺️💁🏼♀️

This was SO good!
Awesome Ep, fantastic series. Few know WA trails like you & Mark do🤗
One of the finest walks in Aus & in my top 3 in WA . Awesome series well done. The personal aspect must have been hard but hopefully you’ll get to hike somewhere meaningful with your dad again.
Hopefully! We may end up doing one or two in Fitzgerald River one day 🤞
Gotta love an Australian Alpine Series & Dons story telling abilities are wonderful. Love walking through the fog though & that looked fantastic!
Shame about the weather but that’s alpine for you. LOVE this series

Heck yeah, well done man! That weather was not favourable haha. Good work on persevering and not getting too discouraged at changing plans! Really enjoyed this series!
@@MeasuredLight thank you! I’ve walked for days in rain before but I’ve never been more drenched than I was on the day to Charlottes Pass. It wasn’t what I had planned of course but I was glad to make it in the end at least. And I will be back for the Rolling Grounds some other time!
@thelongwaysbetter keen to see you cross the rolling grounds when you make it back! I'm planning a trip and we'll probably start and end at Charlotte Pass 🙂
Nice work man! The scenery on days 3 and 4 looked amazing!!
@@MeasuredLight these two days were just extraordinary, the scenery blew me away. And my night at Whites River Hut, bunkered down with a fire inside while it stormed outside, is one of my favourite nights out in a trail ever

Great video! That is a beautiful area that I am hoping to get to next year. Really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing!
@@MeasuredLight thanks for watching! It’s a really beautiful area and I’m looking forward to coming back to do more High Country hiking in the near future.
Good on ya mate, great walk. How did you on the section where you leave the road and cross the paddocks with the small aroiws every once and awhile…was it hard to navigate?
@@AaronNolan-p1o hmmm, I’m not sure which section you mean. Was it during these days? The only but where I remember getting off the road was near the powerlines on day 2 where the vehicle track sort of disappeared
@@thelongwaysbetter whoops my bad. The section I referred to was in the thawra to kiandra part. Sorry mate.
@@AaronNolan-p1o all good. I'm actually interested to know about that section too as I would like to do Tharwa to Kiandra (or vice-versa) some other time, but walking through potentially difficult to navigate tall grass with snakes around is not really something I'm particularly enthused about
I feel like you're just encouraging DBCA when you get excited about a toilet block...
@@MarkPybus hahaha I bet they are filled with envy that they can’t compete with ‘highest toilet in Australia’
That road bash up from the power station is… character building🤣👍
@@goinferal5815 sure is. I was determined to walk it all the way to Perisher. Made that accomodation all the sweeter
@@thelongwaysbetter lol… yes a warm and dry room at the end of a long wet and cold day feels so decadent 😉👍
@@goinferal5815 especially when it is a ski lodge with a drying room to dry your sodden pack!
Kiandra to Thredbo is a spectacular section, and great to reminisce about my own walk through this section. Well filmed, although nothing can ever capture the vastness of the area.
@@Earlofmar1 totally agree, there is a magical vastness to the area. Usually I hate vehicle track walking, but it so wild out there you quickly forget it’s all on vehicle tracks
2 questions: - How much (%) of that walk is on firebreak/maintenance vehicle tracks? - How much water do you typically carry?
@@luket6334 it’s almost 100% of the official Kiandra to Kosciuszko section. I really am not a fan of vehicle track walking in principle but it is a lot less objectionable here as it is a wilderness area so you don’t really see beyond the nature of the national park. Water was very plentiful except for one stretch as a usual water source was dry. Usually I carry two litres but that day I should have refilled at a flowing creek before camp. All other days I could probably have not carried too much as there were constant refill locations
Thanks! You make me feel like I'm on a hike when I'm too deep in work to leave the house!
@@maczopikczu glad you had that experience from the videos. Thanks for watching ;)
Awesome series!
@@eddieintheoutdoors thanks so much! It wasn’t exactly what I planned but I had a great time out there. I’ll be back for more high country adventures in the near future!
Thanks, that gorge looks spectacular. What is the story behind the fish? Is that a naturally occurring thing, or were you just unlucky at the time you went?
Yes it is. As the river dries out and stops flowing the oxygen runs out and they die. Apparently nothing to be alarmed about albeit unpleasant and a bit gross
It’s a shame about the weather Don, however it’s all part of the adventure I suppose😉 I’m loving reliving this section of the AAWT- I think I must of been just down over the border when that front came through🤔
@@goinferal5815 it was a shame to have to skip the Rolling Grounds but on the bright side - my night by myself in Whites River Hut with the fire roaring as I planned out my route is probably one of my favourite nights out on a trail ever
@@thelongwaysbetter those mountain huts are great in bad weather… I had the same thing after slogging up Mt Wills in the snow… getting into the hut and starting a fire was such a contrast to my wet and cold morning hiking in the snow… awesome 👍😉
Great footage, SD card problems notwithstanding. I know it's not ideal walking in the rain, but it really brings out the colours in the landscape, and the snowgums in particular.
@@johnnomcjohnno1957 thank you, yeah the phone footage was better than I thought it would be. Helps that the landscape was spectacular. I don’t mind a bit of rain for the reasons you said, though the deluge being so full on I had to change my plans was a disappointment. But can’t complain about how good these two days were. I’m definitely coming back to climb Jagungal sometime!
Don? Wow I just realised it was you. I've listened to so many podcasts but never seen you until now. Nice upload bro cheers. The long way is better except for the shortcuts in Abel Tasman national park
Hey, that's awesome! Thanks for listening to the podcast! My wife would always agree that shortcuts are acceptable :P. Which shortcuts in Abel Tasman National Park do you recommend? I did the Abel Tasman Coast Track in December 2019 and will definitely do it again with my kid in the future
@@thelongwaysbetter I'm in the planning to do Abel Tasman coast track in October with my 15 year old daughter and was listening to your real track talk just a couple days ago. I'm thinking of hiking/ kayaking/ boating for a good mix. I heard you mention a little shortcut near Awaroa Lodge.
@@nathanbates1260 oh yes... it's more an alternate route but I think it does end up a bit shorter. Well worth it for a nice meal in the middle of the track for sure! Enjoy the hike, I reckon it's a great one to take children on as it's not hard and a beautiful walk
On your non-WA hikes it would be great to discuss the gear you changed to suit the expected conditions and what worked and didn’t and why (eg “with all the expected water crossings I got these x brand waterproof socks and they are/aren’t working out …”
Hey Fayley, it's a good point and I will make a video about my gear later this year. To be honest, I pretty much bring the same gear on all my multi-day hikes give or take some items (e.g. no thermal liner if it's a Summer hike and the forecast is quite warm, gaiters if its Tassie or very off track). For this hike I was satisfied with everything I brought and only regretted not packing rain pants and a pack cover for day 5 which was non-stop rain, and I had not realised how the umbrella now runs water off onto my pack which is water resistant but not to that level.
Thanks, enjoyed that. Just wondering when you walked this? I came through (going the other way) at the end of March. That seat you sat on in 4 Mile Hut - I put that together, and I'm surprised it's still standing!
Hey, thanks for putting that together! It was over the Easter break and I started on April 2nd
Just found you! ;) Great video!

Yeah nah, Jazz is the wrong choice of music here! Only unmuted to hear what you had to say, else muted.
@@Brain1962 I was well aware I was taking a risk using jazz as it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I stand by the choice given the music is from an album by a local artist who wrote songs inspired by this area. Thanks for watching anyway!

Another great video, thanks for posting. I found that Boranup Beach section was a mental battle as Hamelin Bay boat ramp never seemed to be getting closer. Looking forward to watching the final section.
Thanks for watching! Yes, I agree Boranup Beach can be a real battle. Last time I did the Cape to Cape in 2017 the middle section of the beach was terribly soft sand and it made it all the more challenging as a result. I walked the track N2S in April and it was fantastic. I had never walked with poles, but with all the sand they were a game changer for me. Great video and thanks for sharing your journey.
@@206898195311 it’s a great walk for sure.
