Welcome to the Channel! Josh here... Professional Triathlete, business owner, Architect and Teacher... Thanks for showing an interest in some of the bits and pieces i'm putting out.
The channel is a following of my triathlon journey from complete novice to professional triathlete, having competed in two Commonwealth games, dabbling in both short and long course racing. Being British senior Champion and having won Nottingham Half has allowed me to access a load of elite and professional racing abroad.
I want to give an insight into what that looks like on a week to week basis, but also bring you a load of tips and tricks i've picked up from those around me along the way! So if that sounds up your street, give me a follow / subscribe, and drop me a comment in the vids.

How To Swim Freestyle in 4 Easy Steps: My Technique For Front Crawl Swimming
Sorry to hear about your DNF but you had a good season.but sure heat adaptation is possible but thing is you live in Wales. I am from Belgium but live here 15 years in Barcelona and in summer i run short runs in sometimes 37 degrees with no intensity and short .45 min ....by the time it is october this weather feels already fresch ...as we are adapted .was i living in belgium this weather of 6 oct would be hot .now .just perfect .so you can adapt but at what cost....as you pros need to train quality and this is here inpossible in july and august.
12m gap Ahahha. Why bother lying. Everyone knows everyone takes advantages on the bike when the motos aren’t there. Mate you guys overtook me an age grouper, and you were like 2-3m/ apart. And every pro group I saw was no more than 3-4m between anyone.
Maybe the groups you saw, but I can only speak for myself, and we had a moto with us the entire time, as the lead group often does, and I feel as though I raced as fair and honest as possible, and think the others in the group would say the same
Hi Josh, don't know if you remember but we chatted before the race start. I was the very nervous firefighter trying my second full distance after a DNF at bolton. I didn't know you but I've just come across this video on my youtube and instantly remembered our conversation as you were talking about trying to avoid the heat. I made the joke that by the time I got off the bike the sun would be going down! Sorry you didn't finish but just to let you know your words to me helped calm my (very very) overactive mind and settled me into the race. I managed to finish my first full distance in Calella in 14 hours 10 mins and you definitely had something to do with it. So thank you for chatting to a stranger and good luck for your next race. I'll be following now!
I definitely remember ☺️ I love those pre race interactions as we are all going through the same thing mentally so it’s nice to chat and offload or help someone else offload so I’m really pleased it helped settle you 🙌🏻 massive congratulations on completing your first Ironman though, that’s awesome, and I hope everything goes well in the future ☺️
Think it’s time for Business class flights next year 👌👌
Making a decison to pull the plug in the 'heat of battle is tough'. I had to do it in Wales this year because of back injury- my first DNF too - ill never know whether it was the roght thing to do - but I'm ok with it. Just hungrier now. We'll take the learnings from it 👍. Great season btw and loving your content.
1.5 hours in rain (alpha RoS 1) an I stayed dry.
Out of interest - have you backtested your electrolyte/salt intake pre race and per hour during the race vs other races of similar temps and hunidity?
Yes I work with precision hydration and always do a full breakdown of each race ☺️
Mega season Josh, pity to end it with a DNF, but a DNF where you were 3rd out the water, off the bike and when you had to call it, I'd say that's a really encouraging DNF if you could say that. (Not to mention it's almost the same as old Harry's DNF in IMSA and damn look what that did for him 👀) Have a LEKKERRR lil rest and I look forward to following along in 2025!
Thanks Tim!!
The long term damage from heat shock argument rings true for me after a couple traumatic races in France. Never been the same. As such, reckon you made the right call 👍
Going by your run form you definitely make the right decision you didn’t look yourself or like your normal running form. You’ll bounce back
Josh, I am not a professional athlete so would never try to tell you how to race. I am an anaesthesiologist and do complete IM myself. I can only congratulate you on being so mature and forward thinking in pulling the plug. I would say you really need to look at your electrolyte composition / requirements in the heat. You can most def race in the heat but need to get a strategy that will compensate for your sweat rate. You said you were ill prior to competing and so were starting with a negative electrolyte / fluid balance. You will get tit right. Congrats on being so professional in your approach. If only more people did practice what they preach we would avoid a lot of the negative outcomes we have in triathlon.
Thanks John! Really appreciate that ☺️ I work closely with precision hydration for fuel/ hydration and sweat rates etc, but we are going to be doing a few more lab tests before next season to make sure I’m on top of it like you suggest. I’d be baffled if I was at a deficit before or during the race as I pre loaded and had a lot during, but who knows. Thanks again!
@@Josh_lewis Josh this is the big problem. Preloading is a misnomer / bullshit science. If you add more fluids / electrolyte before an event - your body will either eliminate it or 3rd space it about areas of inflammation. This leads to higher body weights but not extra fluids available to you when you’re in distress. It is making sure that you are adequately filled to where your osmolality is normal and your pee is light yellow. You started behind on fluids from your GI upset and this is extremely difficult to manage unless all the GI upset has settled. In terms of absorption, the guys at PH will be experts at this, once you can absorb. Once you excercise the first thing that shuts down is the gut and so it is hard to replace ongoing losses. Hence why we give so much IV treatments after an event. If you combine the ongoing losses with your deficit then you need extraordinary amounts of fluid. What would be nice to look at if you’re unless is your venous side volume through ultrasound / echo. They could do this with PH in the extreme simulations you do. If you measure volume and not just weight you’re going to get a better idea of your deficits. The other thing would to look at other solutions that have magnesium, potassium and manganese. Best of luck. Hope you slay the next few years
I was there.Well done
Cooked 😘 heat training in Wales need 😁☀️🔥
I had the same thing happen to me on Sunday and it hit me in the out and back section in the town where I felt like the air was standing still 🥴 would be great if you could share the answers if anyone comes back to you. Enjoy the off season !
Will definitely share, hope you’re ok!
I saw Johsh in the Ironman stadium or whever its called. I shouted come on John you absolute monster!!! :)
Haha I remember well! Thanks mate!
Had similar situation this year in IM Tallinn. Had my first DNF, had same symptoms and first time pulled off. However done covid test after race and turned out positive. You will comeback stronger bud !
Same thing happened to my husband at a different race. Felt crap, struggle, then tested positive. Arghhh😢
Yeh there could have been something underlying, I’ve currently now got a bit of a cold but I wouldn’t have thought it would have had that effect but 🤷♂️ i tested negative for covid so just standard cold
Great season Josh! Enjoy the downtime.
Do you need a phone to use the 1050?
No not at all, but can be useful for uploading rides to strava etc. it’s got WiFi though
You sound like a bit of a baby.
More visual explainations needed - after all this is a video platform - so not so much on your face and more on swimming... please...
“Oh Josh: There’s a fly on me” 😂
Do you do strength sessions in the gym during the week?
No, but that’s not to say you shouldn’t. Depends on your volume and durability. I include strength elements in my workouts (pull/ paddles, overgear, and hills)
@@Josh_lewis i like to incorporate 2-3 full body strength sessions during the week (It depends the week obviously) but i see that nearly all pro triathletes don't do strength sessions. Im curious about that, i suppose that is because you have a lot of volume in your specific triathlon training 🤔😌
Josh, I have two questions - I have observed you are considerably heavier than most triathletes. Is that by design? Would this help you on the bike and hinder you on the run? Curious to understand as I am slightly underweight, I think, for my bike, I suffer, but my run is decent. Second, is shaving necessary, in your opinion.
I did a video on this a while back. In short, it’s all individual. I’d say I’m a similar weight to a lot of the people I’m racing, but I’m a lot shorter, which isn’t good for stride length and running. Check out the vid below Triathlon RACE WEIGHT myth | Kristian Blummenfelt World and Olympic Champion th-cam.com/video/NX1gNdIx6w4/w-d-xo.html
And shaving does apparently save watts, however I use calf sleeves most of the time so only shave my knees 😂 … unless it’s a non wetsuit then I’ll shave my legs
Could bit be dropping out due to age of strap? I heard you need to replace it when that starts to happen. Did it drop out when it was new?
Huge congratulations with a great result!
Nice one Josh! Love the work of your lead bike/hype man!
Fantastic performance and a brilliant and informative video. Honestly the clarity of information and production values make these the best triathlon videos on YT IMO.
Ah thanks Dave haha! Not quite sure about that but I’ll take it ☺️
Congrats, Josh!
I’ve been torn between a discounted 1040 and the 1050. Definitely don’t ’need’ the 1050. But the color sure will look great between the aero bars. As you said, will plan on using it for at least 3 seasons. Just need to ride long and ride often to justify the expense.
Great result. This is the 2nd or 3rd race I've watched live on TH-cam where you've got plenty of camera time. Hopefully you're turning that into £€$.
@@stevenleslie8354 also it was mentioned in GTN
Thanks!! Yeh definitely getting plenty of air time, let’s hope some finance comes in next season from it. The team is hard at work trying to get that done, including myself!
Great performance! Congratulations!
Mega result 👏
Brilliant josh 👏 💪 awsome performance, i have just signed up for the full for next yr , my first full distance
Wow that was a hardcore run. Great work!
Congrats again, Josh!
Go on Josh! Awesome stuff 👏
Brilliant race Josh, well done!
Great review. I'd love to transition from my Garmin to Apple Watch Ultra 2, however there's a few things I struggle with: 1) No manual lap swim option (the action button would be perfect for this) and 2) Trainingpeaks only supports running and cycling workouts (no strength/gym, swim workouts). Easy fixes with a software update, but who knows when that will come...
Hey Josh, thanks for the mention for Eddie and myself. Awesome result and well deserved, we will continue to watch your journey and rise to the top!
Congrats with second place!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Amazing!
Just seen the result - congrats!
Congratulations with your 2nd spot!👏
Good luck man!
Looks pretty windy!
U are brilliant
Go well Josh!
Lets hope that road and gate are open 🙈 Have a great race.
The strap just falls apart, the conductive strap breaks and deteriorates. The kicker is I hardly use the damn thing.
Josh, do you bring these hours down leading into this session to shed some fatigue?
No i don't but i quite often do a similar load to this so my body is fairly used to it. That being said, i probably instinctively take things slightly easier on the days on either side to compensate. but as long as you fuel well, ironman pace isn't too damaging as a whole.
Great video again, thanks Josh. What’s roads are you doing these flat rides on if you don’t mind? My goal through the winter is to dial my position in, everything is so hilly in the valleys!
I did them on the Newport flats! However if you’re further west / northwest then there is a great road up by port talbot
