The Latest and Greatest Slide is Complete!!! 🛝😄🛝
Well, folks, here’s an update on slide number eight for Top Tread Stairways. We just installed the last layer of this slide, which is the 277th layer of White Oak. this slide will cover a full 14 foot floor to floor rise and it measures 38 feet long, which is the longest curved hard slide ever! After the sanding is complete, we will take the bolts out to break it into five sections in order to install it at the jobsite 2100 miles from here. The install is scheduled for February 11.

How to install Wood Railings w/ iron balusters on space-saving Stairs
มุมมอง 19221 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Welcome to Top Tread Stairways! Today I will explain how to install a basic guard railing system on our space-saving stairways. We recommend hiring an experienced railing installer, but realize that is not always feasible. If you or one of your team have some experience in Woodworking or you have a good contractor, you may be able to install on your own without bringing in a stair tradesmen...

How to reassemble a wood slide at the jobsite

This video is for installers of my curved wood slides. It shows how we often build them in two or more sections lengthwise and how they get glued and bolted together at the jobsite. Clamps are helpful to ensure the joint is perfectly aligned in all directions. Titebond (or equal) glue should be applied to both surfaces that will come in contact with each other. When things are glued and per...

This type of staircase, known as 'alternating tread stairs,' is actually called the 'Santos Dumont Staircase' because it was invented by the Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont in 1918. Fun fact: Santos Dumont is not only the creator of this unique staircase design, but he is also recognized as the true inventor of the airplane, achieving the first public, self-powered flight in 1906 with his 14-Bis. Additionally, he inspired the popularization of the wristwatch when he asked his friend Louis Cartier to create a practical timepiece to use during his flights!

Now make sandpaper pants to sand it out quick
I would love to see what this is all about ! ❤
We just completed building slide number 8 in our shop and we are grinding and sanding it. This curved slide is built with solid white oak and is scheduled to be installed in Raleigh NC on February 11.
@@TopTreadStairways😮😮😮 so if I get me a house I can possibly have one installed 😮💨👏🙌
We would love to build one for you!! 🛝😄🛝😄
Thanks for this ... very helpful!
You are welcome! Glad you found it helpful!
That's awesome. Can I ask the rough cost for that slide installed and finished?
Thanks. This curved slide had a 12 feet vertical rise. A slide of this caliber will cost between $50,000 and $100,000.

Thanks. After translating your comment, I understood you. “Cool” Have a blessed day!
Just curious did you use wood glue?
Yes, 5 gallons of Titebond 2 went into this slide
I am building one for my Church leading up to our sound booth in our youth church. Love the fact you proclaimed Jesus. That’s awesome. God Bless you my Brother
You’re welcome! Great to hear from you! Let me know if you need any help or advice on this space-saving stair project for your church. God bless you as well!
It would be so awesome to buy 10 sheets of 4x8 plywood with those precut into it 🤘
I’ll be happy to help with this project. Come by the shop and show me what type of plywood you want me to cut these out of and I will get you some pricing.

@@TopTreadStairways that is really cool. I would’ve never guessed that’s what it was. I’ve never seen one of these.
This is a stair case you see when trippin.
These stairs are all the rage right now, especially for small spaces. People love them!
Damn dude you really knocked that out of the park
Thanks Ryan! Glad you enjoyed it!!
that slide is going through a framed wall. build yourself a house out back while you're there because that's the only customer you'll ever need.
The framed wall you see on the video is a temporary wall we build on each side of the slide to guide us when putting it together in the shop. When the slide is complete, these studs come out and the slide gets loaded into the trailer to make it 2100-mile trip to North Carolina.
@TopTreadStairways looks awesome either way!
You have found a one of a kind job that is epic.
Thanks Dan! Baby boomers and their grandchildren are lining up to order them!
Is the front of the tread on the Alternating Tread Device weak and does it ever splinter off? How thick is it, it looks an inch and a half.
That’s something I think about a lot. We always consider the size of the tread when recommending a thickness. Thankfully, we have never had an alternating tread break. We recommend making the treads a minimum of 1.25 to 1.75 inches thick but occasionally for a narrower stair, we will build them 1 inch thick.
*How much for alternating stairs? I'm interested*
Thanks for contacting us. Thanks too for the phone call. Hopefully the pricing we emailed you in response will work great for your upcoming space-saving stair project.
Awesome craftsmanship and design! I'm curious, what program did you use for the computer drawings? Cheers!
Thanks Jessica. I’m glad you enjoyed it. The main program we use for our stair and slide designs is StairCon by Elecosoft.
What kind of wood?
We make our stairs out of more than 40 different species of wood. The ones pictured here from left to right are: knotty alder, Poplar stringers with plywood treads, and pine stringers with plywood treads.

Super cool slide!! I want one now haha
Thanks Jeff! I’d love to build one for you😄
This is amazing! Great craftmanship and fun functionality! I think we may need to try this on our treehouse we are building!
Hey! Why not?😄 Although I wouldn’t recommend this type of build on an exterior project. It’s not likely to hold up well overtime in the rain and sun.
What is the angle of ripid upstairs?
I don’t know what ripid means. The ship ladder is 64° and the alternating tread is 57°. The conventional stair is 37°.
U got a head knocker
You are right. The contractor wanted the stair installed first, and then he was going to cut the opening bigger.
do you folks build wall hugging, folding stair ladders?
We do not offer a folding solution, but some of my customers have installed a hinge and pulley system to swing the stair up and out of the way. However, we do offer a system that makes the Stairs/Ladder portable by hanging it on a bar at the top. In that case you could stand it up, vertical to store it or carry it out of the area until needed. If possible, email me a picture of the area you want to install the ladder/space saving Stair and I will advise. My email address is TopTreadStairways@gmail.com
Would love to see the stages of building that. Nice work
😂😂😂 Emperors new stairs What is wrong with you people ? “ it’s ergonomic “
👍
beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
But…why? What benefit is the space saved by losing half a step? Besides looking cool.
The steps need less of a horizontal gap between them.
Basically it can be steeper without catching your toe under the step.
Alternating stairs are used in spaces where the square footage is very valuable.
@@TopTreadStairwaysfirst time I saw them was on a boat!
@@robertcraft1030 Fascinating! Thank you so much for the insight!
Both the width and the style looks like something they'd have installed on the Titanic. Maybe something in Officers Only, where it's as cramped as third class but still expected to be fancy. There's a game called Project 401 if you want to see what I mean.
Yes, these have been used in many different types of ships.
Today I learned there's a fanbase for stairs
Yes, I try to get to the annual Stair conference as often as I can😄
"Just as easy to climb as regular stairs in theory" The in practice part being when you get drunk on your roof, forget which side the first step is on, and faceplant
Hello, Can you tell me what the minimum distance you need from the front of the base of the alternating stairs to a wall in front of it? Thank you.
The overall run of this stair is 42 inches. This is the code-compliant minimum for a 10-riser space saving Stair. Extending this to 50 inches would make it much easier to climb.
Thank you for the reply, but maybe I wasn't clear. If you are standing at the base of the stairs about to climb it, how much space is required from the base of the stairs in front of your toes, to an obstruction behind you like a wall, door, or piece of furniture? Thanks again.
When did Jesse James of Monster Garage stop making motor cycles and start doing this?
Ha ha! 😂 Perhaps there is a bit of resemblance! 😆
I may be the first one to comment but you are sure to get more. The slide is awesome. I hope you have a video showing you making it. One bit of advice. Fix your sound! It was near impossible to hear when you were standing far by the slide in the beginning of the video. I almost left the video immediately because of that. There are too many videos with excellent audio these days. If you want to keep making videos I'd suggest better audio equipment. Just my humble opinion
I first saw this type of alternating staircase in a Norwegian show renovating summer houses. In Norway they apparently call it ""sambatrappe" (samba stairs), which I thought was kinda cute.
That is cute! Thanks for sharing.😄
What are the dimensions of and footprint of this staircase? Thanks!
The footprint of this space-saving stair is 52“ x 52“.
Since this is a video, i was expecting a demo of actual people walking up n down the stairs..
What is the purpose, couldn't you just alternate your climbing stride on a normal stairway. I don't see any advantage
Of course, you can use a regular stairway if you have room for it. These stairs are used in areas where space is tight, such as tiny houses, cabins, and fire escapes.
A stairway like this takes up less than half the space of a conventional stair.
Looks like a cute, quirky book shelf🥴 I'll stick with a standard ladder, gotta feel kinda odd to hammer or paint something on a non parallel footing 🤔
This type of stair is used in tiny houses and cabins. It’s not made to use a ladder that a painter would use on a jobsite.
@@TopTreadStairways not trying to be a wise guy, but small cabin or whatever. Descending could be a little tricky. It is cute, good luck 👍
Good thoughts! My clients think these stairs are more user-friendly than any type of ladder. most users face forward when they descend these stairs. When descending a ladder, most people face backwards. I have a copy of a study that has been done where users rate alternating-tread stairs as more user-friendly than spiral stairs.

Any issues with it splitting along the grain?
I am very particular on the consistency of the wood grain I use for the treads. I’ve built over 50 of these stairs and have not had one break yet.
I tried to send you a reply but it came back to me. Not sure what to do....

Hi Again, i am in the Chicagoland area, so i font know if you are far or close, when considering shipping distance?
We fabricate all our stairs in our Arizona shop, but ship them to all 50 states and Canada.
Could you give me a general idea of how much it would cost to buy one of these ladders?
A 24-inch wide basic space-saving stair with a 9 foot floor to floor rise would be $800 plus shipping. That’s a 24 inch wide open-riser alternating stair width plywood treads. If you give me your email, I can send you an order form that shows all the optional upgrades available. My email address is toptreadstairways@gmail.com
how do I get in touch, and order, here in california
Hi John. Thanks for contacting me on email.
Are these building code compliant, whether to a loft, attic, or unfinished cellar?
Yes, they are code-compliant if a person builds them correctly. i’ll be happy to send you a copy of the Visual illustration of the building code if you send me your email address. My email is toptreadstairways@gmail.com
@TopTreadStairways do they classify as stairs? According to building code if your loft is accessible by stairs you get taxes for extra sqf.. if it's accessible by ladder it is not. I wanna build a "ladder" that functions as stairs..
@AInimatedArt-l7g me too. Are you in USA? I have old cottage, downstairs 8 foot, upstairs will be 6'3" . Ship's ladder will look more fitting. I don't think UK tax will vary on ladders vs stairs for us. I would only pay more council tax if upstairs is classified as "living space" ie bedroom or kitchen. An office or occasional room is not living so exempt from building regs. But I will do all I can for light, insulation, smoke alarms, emergency exits etc.
@OliverTwist-vv4xh yeah I'm in the USA. Kinda digested with the taxation of how they classify our homes so I'm looking for loop holes
@@AInimatedArt-l7g haha good luck, we are getting screwed now by the trans loving pink haired communist party
Thank You Brother😇🙏🏼 But what is the bar for?
You are welcome Brother! That horizontal iron rod serves as a space limiter to keep the riser opening less than 4 inches. Depending how an inspector interprets the code, he may require it.
Nice, but my house isn't sideways... (sigh)
OK, I’m not sure what you mean by a house not being sideways. We have these installed in all sorts of large and small homes and barns.
Thanks for sharing. Have you ever built an alternating tread device for an rv? To get from the inside to a rooftop deck?
No, I haven’t, but I’d love to build one for you. Let me know the overall rise and send me a picture of the location you hope to install it. My email address is toptreadstairways@gmail.com
