Awesome design, but I worry about first responders (medical or emergency type evacuations. Getting a stair chair down them might be hard.
I guess as long as they're a secondary stair case that would probably mitigate the issue. Unless there's a fire or something on the primary staircase.

These stairs are designed for tight spaces where there is not room for a conventional stair. If a ladder seems like your only option, this is a massive upgrade and fits within the same space as a conventional stepladder. Most codes allow these stairs to be the primary access to an area of 200 sq ft or less.

Sorry to hear about your grandpa’s amputation. I realize these stairs are not for everyone. I have mentioned that fact in several of my videos and articles. That’s one reason the code allows these stairs to be the primary access to an area of 200 sq ft or less.

I was hoping you would walk up the stairs to just get a visual references for the steepness. I randomly found this video, and so glad I did. It's an awesome old solution to a modern day problem. I've never seen any stairs like this in a tiny house. Having lived a year in a bus with a built on attic bedroom, which was accessed by a virtical rung ladder through a hole in the floor, I would have loved this. It would great if some of hand-rail was added for extra safety. I'm not looking atm, just impressed with the whole elegance of the solution, and surprised I've not seen it before.

This type of staircase, known as 'alternating tread stairs,' is actually called the 'Santos Dumont Staircase' because it was invented by the Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont. Fun fact: Santos Dumont is not only the creator of this unique staircase design, but he is also recognized as the true inventor of the airplane, achieving the first public, self-powered flight in 1906 with his 14-Bis. Additionally, he inspired the popularization of the wristwatch when he asked his friend Louis Cartier to create a practical timepiece to use during his flights!

Exodus 36:1 “So Bezaleel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the Lord has commanded.”

I dont get the point...we dictating which foot to start walking up the stairs with now?? Please explain, I feel like I missed something important. Is it to use less wood? Stairs on hard mode? I'm lost

    • @TopTreadStairways
      @TopTreadStairways  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

When we walk up a convectional stairway we normally use half of the stair tread at a time, placing one foot on the right half and the next foot on the left half (or the other way around). The idea of an alternating-tread stair is cut out the half of the tread you don’t use and then alternate the wide end of these paddle-shape treads from left to right. This give you 11" of support for each foot, just like a conventional stair but uses only half of the floor space. It’s a great solution for tiny houses.

My dad was a custom home builder and a Christian missionary. After building hundreds of homes in Pennsylvania the whole family moved to Southern California and started building. One of my biggest surprises was the discovery that there were no pre-built stairs available anywhere in the state. After helping my dad build 85 homes i split off and started my own Stair shop. Since that I have shipped hundreds of custom staircases to all 50 states.

Each tread is 5" forward of the one below it. Each tread is also cut 5"
narrower on the one side than the other. That gives you 10" which is the individual tread run minimum in residential code. With the 1" nosing projection the tread measures 11" on the wide side.

It's my prayer that Our Heavenly Father will Bless you and all those that you hold dearest to your heart all the days of your life and theirs! Now about the beautiful staircase, I would love to speak with you about one for my tiny house build as my time is running out but am unsure of me making any of these desissions, I pray about them but I am a widow as of 1 week to the day after Thanksgiving 2015, and he always took care of this type of things and we were together since I was in the 9th grade. My father had taught me the importance of prayer about all things but he passed on Christmas day in 2005 at 55 yr's young and that about killed me, but at least God gave us time to say whatever we needed and God allowed me the one to care for him, as he had me as a child & throughout my life. Whit my husband he was beautiful all the way through as Daddy had taught me to save myself, & pray that he would send to me a man with a good heart that also belonged to our Lord. The Lord did just that and although he was 12 yr's older than me, I knew that he was the answer to our prayers. But he looked fine but inside that so kind heart he was a ticking time bomb and the last words we said to each other was how much we loved one another, and he was gone, So I pray about everything but 2 mth's later with me never paying our bills and I grieving his death, we had a house fire. That was when I called our insurance company only to find out that I hadn't paid the bills and I was left with nothing. So, I then had lost my husband and our house and all in it! I was at a place where I never dreamed I'd be a homeless widow with MS. So I have stayed with friends from church for a few months, then moved on to the next one to offer until I was told about tiny house's and with a broken heart, the MS and living in a hospital bed I kept praying that the Lord would send me a message & only then did I realize that they even existed. But I only needed enough space for me and a loft so my young grandbabies could spend all the time with me as they used to before I became homeless, and could sleep in the large loft! So, I won't continue writing you a novel and get straight to the point. The fact about your beautiful staircase, I have been looking for about a month now as they keep saying it will finally be finished soon, and I would only require a six and 1/2 high one, also to save on as much space as possible I'd love to have one about 1 ft. wide. I don't know if you have kits that you can sell, but I am praying that you do! Nothing would make me happier then to buy from a brother in Christ! So, I will leave you my email that I use each day at jamesgina766@gmail.com & again I soo look forward to hearing from ya. Again May God bless you and all those that you love, thanks Gina~

I agree, it looks cool, but I honestly dont see the point.
It's be horrible for kids, pets, and old people, if you fall down these stairs it'd be infinitely worse due to all the jutting out half steps, and as other people have said, not sure how a stairchair would get down them.

The point is saving space. These are not for conventional homes but for very tight areas such as tiny homes and accessing small loft areas. If you only have room for a ladder and not a conventional Stair, this is a great solution.

You’re right, alternating stairs are not for everyone. But they sure are a big improvement on a ladder, and they don’t take any more space than a stepladder.

These are insanity. There is 200 years of standardisation of stairs for a reason. you might as well have a ladder. you're just asking for an accident.

An alternative to a ladder is the whole idea of alternating stairs. They are not meant to completely replace conventional stairways, but are designed for situations where space is tight and your only option seems to be a ladder. They are just as steep as a regular ladder but are far easier to climb because of their design.

@@TopTreadStairways Oic. that makes more sense. I was under the impression that these were an attempt to reinvent the wheel by some radical tiny house hippies. I was like, "would a building inspector even clear those? who would want that?".

The IRC and ICC building codes allow alternating stairs. Here is the definition:
      ICC DEFINITION:
ALTERNATING TREAD DEVICE. A device that has a series of steps between 50 to 70 degrees (0.87 and 1.22 rad) from horizontal, usually attached to a center support rail in an alternating manner so that the user does not have both feet on the same level at the same time.
      IRC DEFINITION:
R311.7.11 Alternating tread devices. Alternating tread devices shall not be
used as an element of a means of
egress. Alternating tread devices shall be permitted provided that a required means of egress stairway or ramp serves the same space at each adjoining level or where a means of egress is not required. The clear width at and below the handrails shall be not less than 20 inches (508 mm).
Exception: Alternating tread devices are allowed to be used as an element of
a means of egress for lofts,
mezzanines and similar areas of 200 gross square feet (18.6 m²) or less
where such devices do not provide
exclusive access to a kitchen or bathroom.
Here is a link to a very helpful visual illustration of the Stair building codes. See page 20 for pictures to illustrate the code quoted above.
