    I wish they would make one like this gauged for canine blood. The convenience is great though. I've done 3 glucose curves on my dog using this apparatus, but it's expensive! I bought a glucose monitor designed for canines and now I can do it myself and save money.

It went dead after 24 hours and when I contacted them, they said this product should never be recommended for pets and they will not replace it. Below is their customer Service Message: "We are sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused, however the Freestyle Libre 2 system is only approved for human use. It has not been evaluated for use on animals. Hence, use of the Freestyle Libre 2 system on animals is not covered by warranty and will not be subject to replacement. What should the numbers be for a normal reading for a cat please in mg/L. My cat tested at 19 mg/L Which I think is high? Thanks

    • @ManchacaVet
      @ManchacaVet 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Typically, a normal range for a feline pet is 80mg/dL to 120mg/dL. If you are using a Western Country measurement (mmoles/L), then there is a conversion link you can use: www.felinediabetes.com/bg-convert.htm. Ultimately, blood glucose readings on any patient are variable, so I would consult with your regular veterinarian on the appropriate range for your pet.

    Would icing the injection site help to ease the pain? My dog cries almost every time.

    • @ManchacaVet
      @ManchacaVet 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not familiar with how effective an ice pack can help to reduce pain for your pet's injection site. However, I do find that distracting them with treats, food, or scratches and pets on the head can deter them from the shock of the injection. You can also desensitize the area by scratching or patting the site prior to administering the injection. Be sure to always alternate where you administer your insulin injections to prevent soreness. The easiest site for injections is between the shoulder blades, but you can also administer your insulin dose in the left or right shoulders as well as the left or right hip areas. Hope this helps.

    Can a cat test positive 6 months after their 2nd vaccine? I had a cat test negative at 3 months and then was vaccinated. He got sick at 1yr and they tested him and he was positive. I was shocked as I have three others and am now getting them tested.

    • @ManchacaVet
      @ManchacaVet 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there. Good question. A pet can become positive at essentially any time if they are exposed to one of these viruses. Just because they are negative at one point doesn’t automatically mean they will remain negative for the rest of their life, it just simply means they aren’t positive right then and there. I like to compare this to COVID in humans; you could test negative at one point but if exposed to the virus later down the road then you will now become positive. If one cat in the house is positive then I agree it’s best to have all the cats tested, but I would make that same recommendation even if all the cats were healthy, as this is a test that should be performed as part of annual wellness lab work in all cats. Hope this helps!

    What' s the suitable time to blood test?

    • @ManchacaVet
      @ManchacaVet ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. Typically, you would do readings for blood glucose curves if the pet is acting abnormally. Otherwise, you may want to do readings every 6 months if you are monitoring. If you are, in fact, performing a blood glucose curve for evaluation, you would want to obtain a reading before feeding your pet in the morning and then continue readings in 120 minute intervals for about 12 hours. Your veterinarian may want a blood glucose curve every 6 months. Consult with your veterinarian on your curve readings to determine if your pet's insulin dose needs to be adjusted. If your pet is acting abnormal and showing signs of hyper or hypoglycemia, you will want to obtain a reading and report to your veterinarian.

    Our vet put one on our Corgi dog 1.5 days ago but every time I scan it says 401. Never changes… always 401, is that normal or should it be changing?

    • @ManchacaVet
      @ManchacaVet ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be normal if your corgi's BG is high and this is the highest reading the FreeStyle will measure. It can take 7-10 days for your pet's BG to regulate on an insulin dose. I would recommend taking your pet to your Vet to see if they can use an AlphaTrak measuring system to compare their results to yours if you have concerns.

    I am currently sheltering a stray cat, keeping him separated from my resident cats until I know it's safe. I got him tested twice for these two diseases, once on Day 36 in March and the second time tested just today, on Day 68. Both times the tests were negative. But I am still nervous because before I brought him inside he was living with a felv positive cat (who is living in a felv friendly shelter now) for who knows how long. Anyway, the one I'm sheltering, do you think he's safe to be around my resident cats? I know there can be false negatives, rare but they can happen, but can they happen twice? Should I wait 4 weeks and test him a third time or do you think he is in the clear? Can cats test negative and still be latent carriers?

    • @ManchacaVet
      @ManchacaVet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! At this point I would think you are fine to introduce the stray cat to your household, given he is overall healthy. If you haven't already, I would recommend scheduling a physical exam as well as full-body blood and urine testing (evaluating things beyond just FeLV / FIV) with your veterinarian before officially introducing into the household just to make sure no other medical issues are occurring but, generally speaking, you should be fine. To your point, technically you can have cats with FeLV but still test negative but that is incredibly uncommon and they are usually quite sick so you often times have an idea that something is going on with the cat. Hope this helps.

While it is only available with a prescription, and is designed for human use, your veterinarian is able to prescribe this reader for your dog if they determine that it is something your pet could use.
