Reach Hockey
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 เม.ย. 2018
Reach Hockey was created in 2018 by coaches Tim Recio and Tim Veach while they were coaching at Gilmour Academy in Cleveland, OH. We mostly started it as a side project/dumping ground for us to try out different ideas. Since then the channel went through many ups and downs, as well as long periods of inactivity, mostly due to Recio leaving Gilmour to coach in New England. However, with Recio moving back to the Pittsburgh area, it gave us a chance to revive our channel with a more focused approach.
Our channel is designed with the serious players and coaches in mind. Our videos tend to focus on a specific skill or concept, with the correct coaching points and demonstrations. We want to provide a resource for the serious players and coaches that might not have the resources to train as effectively as they want, or might be looking for a different approach to a skill or concept. Please feel free to message us with any questions or requests for topics!

Edge Flip Progression-Double and Single Leg
Here's a great drill that can be done in a small area, and in a short amount of time. The difficulty can be increased by going from 1 leg to 2, but the structure of the drill will stay the same.

Poke check and Transition Drill for Defensemen
มุมมอง 10K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Having an active stick is crucial for defenseman. This drill works on the defenseman attacking the puck with their stick, but not relying on it. The defender closes the gap to puck and then throws a poke check, with the stick extending from the defenseman’s hip. Players must be careful to not lunge with chest. While throwing the poke check, the defenseman simultaneously retreats, so that if the...
Single Leg Pivot Progression
มุมมอง 4.1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Here are two progressions to help players work on their pivoting by isolating each leg and edge. The first video features an inside edge to inside edge pivot, while the second features an outside edge to outside edge pivot. On off the main coaching cues is to pretend the ceiling is an inch above your head, so that after making the pivot the player can immediately use their edge to generate power.
Controlling the Dot Lane: Skating Series For Defensemen
มุมมอง 4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This series focuses on developing skating patterns that defensemen can use to help control the dot lane. It is critical for the player to keep their eyes and/or chest square the puck carrier, and protect the middle of the ice. Defensemen must also be able to effectively control their speed, stick position, and the direction their toes are facing to eliminate as many options as possible. Video 1...
Circle Pivoting Series-Creating Power from Pivots
มุมมอง 2.7K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Simple but severely underrated skill by defensemen is use their pivots was create power, eliminating the need for crossovers. These videos show pivots done both facing the circle and facing away from the circle to change the angle and lean of the skater. Notice how there are no strides taken between pivots.
Circle Puck Protection
มุมมอง 2.3K4 ปีที่แล้ว
To start out, the player goes around the circle dropping their inside knee to the ice. When they bring their knee off the ice, they must not stand up, but drive thru their opposite leg on its inside edge. The puck should be held away from the circle either on one hand is going to the backhand, or with gloves close together. In this video, I’m trying to let the back of my right shoulder be the f...
Puck Protection Warm-Up
มุมมอง 3.4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a great drill to warm up the edges, open up the hips, and get the hands loose. When approaching each faceoff dot, the player pulls the puck to their back skate while mohawking around the dot. The player completes the turn by stepping onto their outside edge and riding it throughout the turn. The faceoff dots are stimulating a defender, so make sure to keep your back to the dot and your ...
Heel to Heel Pivot Into Backwards Inside Edge Hold
มุมมอง 2.9K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This drill is to help players develop strong control over their inside edges, especially during pivoting. The drill starts with a heel to heel pivot around the puck or cone. The player then holds their inside edge on a single leg and drives up the ice to the next puck or cone. This a great drill for edges and upper body control, and is beneficial to all players but especially defenseman.

Partner and Small Group Drills for Defensemen
My problem when in neutral is to get to the puck that is at 6 feet from me on my side before the opponent gets it. It takes me forever to get to it, I sometimes fall when I try to turn around.
love it
Thanks. Glad I found your channel
If you compare what you show at 0:55 to actual performance at 5:10, at the end you use both legs for power turn, no one can turn like you show at 0:55 and 2:43. You should show how you can make sharp turns, and not just how to shave ice with outer blade while other leg is pointing forward. Upper body turns, inside leg knee first, etc...
Wow I can't wait until I can do this.
Bruh he makes it look so easy
forget it. i can't even do crossover's,
that's really impressive! Greetings and thanks from the UK!
Just found this channel, great content. Looking forward to trying some of these drills next stick and puck! Great breakdowns, thank you for taking the time for the in depth explanations
How do you guys not have more views. The best hockey drills on the internet.
VeRy The BEST!!!!!!
super
I WILL RECOMAND YOU FOR ALL MY FRIENDS
VERY VERY GOOD EXPLAINED! TAHNKS
super
As a righty, my right leg is near perfect technique with this. However, I've recently noticed that my left leg lags in the technique, and I find my right leg compensating. I need to isolate my left leg more and figure out how to master both edges for the punch turn with my weak side leg.
Just off the top of my head it might be your hand placement. For righties turning left, you have to fight to get the right hand/shoulder rotating into the left leg
@reachhockey interesting. I'll have to be more conscious of this, thanks for the response/tip!
Great Stuff!
1:50 Omg, you go soo fast. I think I need to stop being scared of leaning more and start pushing harder.
Taught it Wrong …
Impressive
When your doing transition pivots you keep your weight on to what side your going to go opposite because you will be more stable and be on balance.
Great stuff thanks! I'd recommend wearing a lapel mic .
You're a ballerina on ice brother.
Very nice!
impressive, feet never cross
Great drills and explanations!
How do you not catch an edge when you twist your skate like that? Is it most important to lift up and ease off on the downward pressure, or are you tracing very small circles on the ice when you transition (or both)?
This isn’t going to be the best explanation, but it’s closer to easing off the pressure and getting to a neutral edge so you can spin. Then you have to catch the edge when you come out of it…so when you’re going forward outside edge to backward inside edge, the blade goes to neutral (neither edge biting) then catches. Hope that helps!
@@reachhockey I will give it a try, thanks. I'll be sure to be wearing full equipment as I fully expect to fall repeatedly. 😅
Simultaneously one of the nicest and most jacked individuals I've ever had the pleasure of working with. His dedication and discipline is inspiring.
Thanks man hope alls well!
That’s great!
Love it, I'm going to give 'em a shot in the morning. Thank you!
Awesome! Let us know how you like it
@@reachhockey did terribly lol but i'll keep working on them, good drills!
Cool balance I have to say.
Thanks Tim, any ideas why i start turning everytime I try and outside edge L stop. I go on one foot and try to jab my other foot down but I dont end up shaving snow like with my inside edge stop
If you’re able to you can send us a video (email address is in the "about" section) and I’ll take a look. Without seeing it, I’m thinking it has to do with controlling your shoulders and/or the amount of pressure you’re putting into the ice when you punch.
Can you give me a explosive workout with sets and reps pls
This is just so good.
You my coach. Super nice.
That's freaky hard bro
But freaky fun too
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Wow! Fantastic and great skill for teaching!
Thank you!
Excellent drills for to improve skating skills. Hello from Latvia🇱🇻
🤘 thank you! One of my teammates was from Latvia 🇱🇻
I need something a bit easier to start with.
Wow that's some nice skating. Great video.
your stride goes really wide after the initial crossovers and short choppy start strides at 1:43 is that just your style of skating? Or do you teach that? it's very blake lizotte-esque
Good catch! Yeah I’ve always had a slightly wider base. The Blake Lizotte comparison makes sense, we’re around the same height (Blake is listed at 5’9 I think, I’m 5’8). Things like the length of your torso, leg bones, etc can all affect your stride…having a wider base must be an under 6 foot thing haha

Beauty video and thanks for the tutorial
Thanks for the watch, glad you liked it!
Fuuuucking hell mate you went like a fucking demon at the end
Can you do a follow up video showing a drill where you don’t lift the leg?
Do you mean the leg that’s punching? If so you can technically still punch from a glide, but even when doing a cutback from a shuffle position (feet outside shoulders and pushing thru inside edge) I personally still pick up my foot so I can get it more in front of my body, and also add a little more power since my foot is technically going up and down as opposed to just turning out…sorry for the ramble does that make sense? A drill to work on that would be shuffling over a padded barrier and exiting with a cutback as soon as you clear the barrier…I like to set it up on the half wall, with the exit either attacking down the wall or thru the seam
oh fuck yeah bud gotta get that edge work in
Nice step by step tutorial!
So much easier for me to remember than other drop-knee edge-work drills👍🏼 thanks man🙏🏼
Buddy was flying there at the end!
Are you wearing regular shin pads underneath your pants?
