I have an EZ-Flash Jr and I don't think GameBoy flash carts are a very convenient way to play games. It takes extra time for them to boot, and the menus are slow. They tend to drain your batteries more too! They do make it easy to get ROMs and saves on and off them though. Plus they let you carry all the games with you on one cartridge.
If you don't care about playing on original hardware you'd probably get better value out of an emulation handheld.
If original hardware is important to you, maybe consider single game carts like the ones from shop.insidegadgets.com/ (not affiliate). They're more complicated, but once you have a game on one it's almost like you're playing on an original cartridge.

    There is a button in the middle of the EZ-Flash Jr that you can press by pushing on the back of the cart while installed in the gameboy that will return you to the menu without needing to power off. Despite what the Amazon listing says for the EZ-Flash Jr they don't include a rechargeable battery if it's telling you the save battery is dry you have to replace it (I learned this the hard way by just trusting before eventually checking the battery to find its not rechargeable.)

    • @systemoflevers

I'm glad I'm not the only one but I'm sorry you had to learn the hard way. Now I wish I had left the line in! The button is a good point. I never really thought about it as part of the flow of saving, but I'll be sure to use it whenever I'm done with a play session to force a save backup.

    I just got my fpga gbc 🥹 I wonder if this is working yet. Although the save state feature is pretty tempting because I’m playing SpongeBob and taking two hits and being reset like every 2 minutes is the most infuriating thing ever 😂 that god awful password continue system is just one of the biggest issues and then having to open the menu every single time to change your items and there’s like 8 equipment items or something crazy like WHY! 😂 I’m tired of getting progress and losing all of it because some tiny enemy that blends into the background hits you. But I’m still tempted to get this because it’s so much cheaper than the Everdrive 😓 but maybe I’ll just wait and save for it. This hobby is expensive.

      Just so you know the ez flash jr doesn't have a save state feature (unless I'm missing something). It only handles normal game saves. It's kinda confusing because it has an "auto save" setting but I think that just automatically backs up the normal save file from RAM to the SD card. The EVERDRIVE-GB X7 does apparently have a save state feature, but like you said, it's expensive! I don't have one, so I don't know how well it works.

It does have the auto save setting but I also believe it only handles normal game saves yes 🙂 and you’re right on the Everdrive gb x7 does have that save state feature however it really is expensive! Hi, I would recommend against the way you've currently connected CE and OE on the chip. The reason being, that if the game ever tries to write to the ROM space, the flash chip will actually see that as a read since A15=0 which makes both CE and OE zero. And two parties on the bus are now competing to drive the data bus. Why would a 32k game do that? Well, many such games, including Tetris, write a 1 to the ROM bank register as a safety mechanism, in case the game was running on a cartridge with a MBC. I can't promise that would make it work on the FPGBC, but at least it checks out that it could be the issue considering your image ROM works but Tetris doesn't. The recommended connection is GB A15 to CE, and RD to OE. Another potential issue is that some of the higher address bits are swapped around. Another recommendation is to go to Makho's repo (linked from Funnyplaying's product page) and get the "patched boot logo" version of the FPGA firmware. This essentially just uses the original boot ROM. Not only does it look more like the original thing, but more importantly for you it shows the boot logo so you can use it for some basic troubleshooting.

    • @systemoflevers
      @systemoflevers หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh jeez, that's a good point. I can totally see the FPGBC having more issues with bus contention than the DMG. I'll see if the change fixes things. Thanks for the advice! I'll double check the address lines too. I'm extra glad I posted this video now!

    • @systemoflevers
      @systemoflevers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nice! How far along are you? Is gbdk easy to setup and on what OS? I've been meaning to check it out for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I mostly do simple demos and proofs of concepts using assembly and RGBDS. Writing everything in assembly gets a bit tiring though. You may have to wait a while for that video, I'm working on a video about sprites/objects first and it's making slow progress. I get most of my information from gbdev.io/pandocs/ but it's more of a technical reference than a guide though. But the idea is to put the window so that it covers the screen. Then you wait until it's at the desired LY (gbdev.io/pandocs/STAT.html#ff44--ly-lcd-y-coordinate-read-only) while in HBLANK, then turn off the window (gbdev.io/pandocs/LCDC.html#lcdc5--window-enable) so that it's off for the rest of the screen. You can detect the desired LY by setting LYC (gbdev.io/pandocs/STAT.html#ff45--lyc-ly-compare) (you'll want to set it to the last line you want displayed for the window) and using an LYC STAT interupt (gbdev.io/pandocs/Interrupt_Sources.html#int-48--stat-interrupt) by setting bit 6 of the STAT register (gbdev.io/pandocs/STAT.html#ff41--stat-lcd-status) then setting the HBLANK (mode 0) STAT interupt by setting bit 3 of the STAT register. Once that fires you'll be in HBLANK and you can turn off the window. Or you could set LYC and and just use the HBLANK interupt, then every HBLANK you can check bit 2 of the STAT register until it's set, meaning you're on the desired line. Hopefully that makes sense, helps, and gives something to start from. If you have any questions feel free to ask! I got some inspiration for this video from th-cam.com/video/Ty-qFeYK2l8/w-d-xo.html, it might give you some ideas too.

If you want you can send me the ROM that it generated for you and I can have a look. My email is in the channel details. Or you can share a link here.

    Were you confident that replacing the power regulator board would fixes the issues you were encountering? Or could it have been something else? I'm curious how confident you were that spending money on the replacement part would fix things :) Thanks for the content!

      I was somewhat confident it would fix the problem. The symptoms of a failing power regulator board matched what I was seeing. I'm not sure what I would have done with this video if it wasn't the problem though!

    I downloaded the 1.05 firmware and put it on the SD card, but the file doesn't appear when I turn on the console. It shows my ROM folders and SAVE folder. But no update file. I even tried putting it in one of the folders and it just doesn't show up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      huh, that's weird. How old is your ez flash jr? What version is it currently running maybe it's only able to upgrade to 1.05 from 1.04? I don't recall how to find that info and I don't have one on me right now to check. I'd also be surprised if it hid the update gb file though. You're able to get other gameboy roms working on your SP with the ez flash jr right?

    It's a very power-hungry flash cart. I had the best luck turning the Gameboy's backlit screen to the lowest setting, and that paired with a Li-Po battery mod helped me load ROMs fine every time. Even on the Gameboy Pocket, which is very finicky when it comes to power. After the ROM is loaded, you can return the brightness back up.

      @systemoflevers 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I can hear my DMG struggle through the speaker when it's loading a big ROM. I have a gb boy colour and it can't even boot with it, I assume because of the power draw

      @@systemoflevers Yes, I could turn the brightness back up, it's just the most power draw happens during ROM loading. My battery was fine. I switched to n EDGB from AliExpress for half the price and been much happier with it for my non-RTC games. And for games that need RTC, I highly recommend Bennvenn's MBC3000. It fits 2 ROMs on the cart and you switch between them using dip switches.

    • @systemoflevers
      @systemoflevers 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no! Does funny playing have useful customer service? Does the system turn on at all? Is there audio? If your friend is nearby and willing to take a risk you might try using their working system to diagnose yours. You could try their screen with your motherboard and your screen with theirs. Maybe have them do the assembly though, in case you're cursed The risk is that something is fried and it fries their components

    Nice video! You missed one crucial part, though. The red repro cart is the perfect candidate to store your ROMs on - it's re-writable. I usually buy a stash of these repro carts, remove the labels and flash my ROMs onto it. Before I found this trick I saved my ROMs on my Everdrive until I realized how much that drains the batteries.

    • @systemoflevers
      @systemoflevers 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah! Good point. I didn't know these repro carts were rewritable until recently. I'm thinking of doing the same as you and getting a stash of them. I hear not all work though, do you have particular ones you get?

    Also, if you don’t have a second GB/GBC (like me), I was able to update the EZ Flash Jnr firmware using a Super Gameboy running on an Analogue Super NT. Super Gameboys can be had for $20 so this was far cheaper for me than getting another console just to update the card. As a bonus, the Analogue Pocket requires this ezcard update as well.
