Did you ever consider bucked rivets instead of pulled since that is what the RV has on it.
No, the kit is designed with pulled rivets.
I dont think bugs ever came into contact with his plane.
That is really cool thanks guys, will make myself some for my S21 here in NZ, cheers!
Nice!
Is that an RV-4 or RV-8 in the background?
I believe it's an 8
I said to myself.. where are they .. I see 134.3, then I see Bremond, Calvert and TX6. I will be starting my S-21 in July. I'm at Coulter Field. Currently fly a J3.
I was leaving coulter! lol My dad had his 172 there in the 80's. The old FBO is now just concrete bc it burned down. Lots of memories there. I'm actually about to fly there now. Still have family in CS. I was born there. I just filmed another guy up in Bridgeport that just started. I'd love to answer any questions you have.
What's the placard on the door frame just fwd of the handle?
Open/close? Rans sells a sticker sheet with lots of different stickers for the s21.
Thanks for posting this. Great numbers! Congrats on the awesome build. Have you found anywhere that time limits you to 2700rpm? I haven’t yet….
Thanks Steve. You too! Nothing on time limits at 2700. I did find some literature from Continental on chts. I think I've heard you mention what I'm referring to. I would like to know what they like to see constant cruise rpm to live at.
Whirl Wind Propeller limits to 2700 on the GA-200L-STOL. whirlwindpropellers.com/aircraft/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/GA200L-Universal-Rev17.pdf
You all did a great job with your build and podcast. CONGRATULATIONS
Thanks so much!
Not sure if you guys still monitor this but I am curious how you are liking your panel and if you would recommend taking the same path you did with the avionics. Nice build, I pick my kit up next month.
Would do it all over again except I'd add a navigator for IFR. 2nd gdu460 screen is overkill.
❤ nice 👍
Beautiful airplane
Thank you!
Any cruise performance numbers yet? Beautiful airplane! Great job!
Just dropped a new video with cruise and firewalled performance numbers.
Congrats and good luck with your new Bird.
Thanks!
What license do you guys have LSA or PPL? Wish you have a happy Take offs & Landings
PPL, thanks. Too fat for only 1300 gross.
the 2nd Landing Was a dream come true perfect Landing
Thanks!
beautiful Airplane
Thanks!
What pitch on your WW prop? With 16deg I'm seeing about 200' as well with the Titan IO-340 180hp WW prop taildragger at about sea level and 55F. The same 16deg gives me 150mph, 2600rpm at 3000'
18 degrees or so right now but I'm only getting 2550 rpm out of it. I need to repitch. I'm getting about 135-140 true at 3000' msl and 50F at 2300 rpm. That's at 8gph. I can crank it up if I want to burn more fuel.
Good job. Enjoyed.
Thank you!
The irony is the bugs come off the ceramic much easier than the PPF on the Leading Edge. It’s softer and the bugs stick into it and bees will actually stain it yellow for a period of months. It helps abrasion from rain, ice and sand better, but I’m undecided if I would ever do it again.
I'm learning as I go but yes, you are right. The bugs kinda stick to the PPF. I have almost 20 hours on the ceramic coat and it's amazing!
How do y'all like the CS prop set up?
It's a ground adjustable prop. I need an adjust it again to get the full 2700 rpm's. I think I'm getting around 2590 max right now.
Really nice! This is on my list too. Who did it and what did they charge (it's a lot of work!)? Also did you put the film on the leading edge? Hard to tell in the video.
Thanks! Expel liner on leading edges and under the doors was $900. Detail, Polish and Ceramic Coat (7-year) was $3,800. It seemed high but it took 2 guys about 15 hours. I'm very pleased with it. It stays cleaner longer now and it's very easy to clean. I have the guys contact info that did the Expel liner and Sapphire Auto Spa did the Ceramic Coat.
@@DadandChad That's actually better than I was expecting. If you look at the surface area of a plane vs a car, there's a lot more to cover.
Very true. I think they said it was equivalent to, 2-Chevy Suburbans in surface area.
Looks great all clean and shined up!
Thanks! Let's see how long that lasts! 😂
Sure is a pretty machine!❤
Thank you!
Congratulations. i still have to watch all your other videos to catch up on your build from the beginning. best of luck passing your checkride
Thanks, I've been flying the rans a little over 20 hours by myself. I just get a cross country endorsement from my instructor and go! Hoping to get my checkride this month! I went up with my instructor this week and passed all the maneuvers on 1st try!
at 3:07 LOL, what can you do without your cameraman? I saw your other video going over Dan's S-21 plane; he nut plate the cowling for easy access to maintenance the engine. is it possible to nut plate the boot cowling so you have easy access to service these avionics? i guess the windshield is in the way.
Haha! You can't get to the boot cowling that way bc of the windshield. You can still access things thru the g3x's. Not as easy as some designs but doable.
thanks for capturing the tips from the experience builder and get under to get the back of panel shots. Avionics and wiring is like a Bermuda Triangle for the first time builder. Love to hear more from the experience builder's tips.
Yeah, it's an enigma. I'd sugggest hiring a good avionics shop to help. I went with pacific coast avionics. They help long after they have been paid. There is a lot of crap you aren't evening thinking about that you will need help with once the place is ready to fly.
❗ promo sm
Congrats
Congratulations on the first flight. I also put paint protection film on the leading edge of my 21’s wings, horizontal and vertical, stab, wing struts, gear, legs, and front cowl. I also ceramic coated the plane. The PPF is great, but it’s kind of a double edged sword. I protects the paint from impact and abrasion but it’s softer and the bugs actually stick to it and are harder to remove then on the painted surface.
Thank you! I've been wiping it down after every flight and the bugs just come right off. I haven't noticed any sticking to the expel.
Hi Chad what kind of electrical connections and where did you get them for your landing lights and NAV lights. Any help appreciated
We used Deutsch connectors with the solid pins. eBay is a good source. Hope that helps
Thank you
Awesome guys! Looks good
Thanks so much!
Congratulations!!! I've been following your channel and have used it as one of my guides for my build. First flight is huge... Thanks for sharing it with us. Hope to be in the air with you soon.
Awesome, thank you! Now we work on getting oil temps down and fine tuning the autopilot. Everyone has these problems so we will be documenting what we are doing to fix it!
The Bird looks great.
Thanks!!!
awesome it's been fun watching the build!
Thanks!
Congratulations gentlemen!!! Such a great accomplishment. It’s a pleasure watching your progress. I’ve taken several of your thoughts and tips to heart on my build as well, thank you. Your paint job looks fantastic as well!
Awesome! Thanks for watching! Good luck on your build...what a feeling when it flies! 💪🏻
Congratulations you two! Been watching the channel for a year and it's so cool to see your plane flying! And doing it as a father and son is an unforgettable experience for you both.
Thanks Ron! It definitely had its ups and downs! Pun intended.
Congrats!! Great achievement for sure.
Thank you!
Trojan effort lads. Congratulations. Im not far behind you. Thanks for all your tips
Thanks! You are going to be so happy!!!
dont for get to wrap the wing struts aswell
That's a great idea!
Congratulations on the first flight! I've been eyeing the S21 to build for a while now thanks for sharing the build!! Did you consider the taildragger vs tricycle gear, I can't decide on which way to go. Your build looks great I hope yall get tons of enjoyment out of it!!
Thanks! The s21 is convertible so you can change it from tail to trike in a few hours if you want.
I reread your comment and noticed I didn't answer you question. We considered both and Dad has tw endorsement. I guess it depends on your mission and personal preference. The tw won for us. But again, the builder can change back and fourth with a minimal cost and time.
I’m looking at the keys and wondering how smooth the flight actually was.
The flight was smooth. The outside air vent is what is making the keys dance. 😊
Did you need special authorization to have a second pilot on the initial flight? I had heard this could be done now, but wasn’t sure if anything special had to be done to make that legal.
Please reference Advisory Circular 90-116.
The APP specifies the qualifications necessary for the additional pilot. Having the additional pilot onboard during Phase I must be specified in the Operating Limitations.
@@cubman2711 I was thinking there was some paperwork required to do this. I just read AC 90-116 and see that section 15 addresses this. The operating limitations are set by the DER during the airworthiness inspection, correct?
Congratulations!
Thank you!
Pilots talk too much, how about fly the darn aircraft and meow after.😊
We have lots to talk about! 😉
Congrats.
Thanks!!!
Nice plane. Know it all old dude is a pain in the ass. I am 65 and he is the best reason to never to go to a retirement village and to avoid listening to crap like this.
Congratulations!!! So exciting!! Question for you: what did you do for insurance transition training? I’m starting to think about it and worried the insurance company will require time in a trike S-21.
Thanks! Had to go to Utah and get time in type. Went ahead and got tailwheel endorsement too. Falcon insurance was ok with s20 taildragger.
Congratulations! Great day! How many hours to build? How long chronically, start to finish?
Thanks! Not sure if the hours. More than I want to count. Ordered kit at Oshkosh '19. Received kit June 28th 2020. Finished plane June 29th 2023. Took a longer to get a DAR out than we anticipated. Wanted a safety pilot as well so that took some time to line schedules up.
@@DadandChad Great job! Followed almost all the way through. I am about to place my order
That's so awesome! How great! Happy for Dad and Chad! Need to soon follow up with a full report! Congrats!
Better videos coming soon. I had to throw something out to share my excitement.
Congratulations guys! Have followed your build all the way through and this is awesome to see!
Thanks Colin! Stay tuned. I'll have some better videos soon!
