I used to work as the lead of a security detail in a hospital. Though I obviously didn't do the work of a doctor, the display of the personal interactions and relationships in this show are the most accurate of any show based around life in a hospital I've ever seen. In fact I think the only position in a hospital they really didn't fold into this show was the security detail, but you see the same people every day, you interact, form social relationships inside the workplace and your actual position doesn't define all of them. Hence the Janitor's memorable role in the show. It hits every right note possible.

The paging part is true. Ive been at work at 3am and a patent comes in the ER with blasts on their slide and have to call the oncall pathologist. Im all, its 3am..i can wait till 6am...probably up drinking coffee by then. Besides, not like the patient is gonna get any worse in 3 hrs.

Man this is the best show ever. I work in lab medicine and was in school back in the early 2000s when this came out. Ive seen season 1-8 from front to back about 40 times that i can pretty much quote every scene. And....and...this is the most medically accurate show out there as far as coworker interaction and discussion.

I work in laboratory medicine. We make fun of docs who order unnecessary tests on patients like ionized calciums, uric acids and uas on everyone who comesbin the ER. Then the doc like cox make fun of the surgeons on cutting on people who dont need it.

1:34 Absolutely true and on the point. I am a doctor in critical care. I love my job, I love my field and I have no trouble staying up all night putting wires and tubes into all sorts of body cavities of people if it gives them even a slight chance to live. But more and more often we get cases where from the beginning it is pretty clear that we cannot win this fight. It drains a lot. Especially when I then have to justify myself in front of a surgeon why I put down a DNR/DNI for a frail and multimorbid 90 year old he just operated on, for it "being too early". Hell no, it is never too early for this. Being an ICU patient is no walk in the park. It is painful, stressful, frightful and disorienting and our medications can sometimes barely take the edge off. Every hour of a futile ICU stay is one too much. BTW, the Tylenol part is grossly untrue, paracetamol induced liver failure is a thing and not difficult to achieve.
