    I've been debating whether I should always sync my Tentacle timecode boxes from my MixPre 10 ii or use the app and sync the timecode boxes, and then use one of them to feed timecode continuously back into the recorder. I have 3 cameras and 3 timecode boxes, but rarely am I using all 3 cameras at once. You made me think about not having to collect all the timecode boxes off the cameras to resync if a problem happened in the middle of the day. Up until now, the workflow has been to use the MixPre as the master clock and sync the timecode boxes at the start of the day. The recorder is powered off my power distribution box on an un-switched port so the recorder can run all day and keep timecode running (bridge sled batteries for Hi-Q battery changes if needed) and power cycle off everything else in the bag when not needed to save battery.

      I have heard a few stories about the Mixpre internal TC generator being a bit of a weak point in the design of the recorder. Many mixers I know are using an external timecode generator with the mixpre series for this reason. ymmv but I think it could be a good idea!

    So cool. Too bad they don't make a version of this for iOS devices. If there was an iOS version of this I would buy it today, but all my mobile devices are Apple. I am wondering - what is ‘intermod’?

    • @charlesisrecording
      @charlesisrecording 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@LisaFly9 is a phenomenon that occurs when two or more signals pass through a nonlinear system, such as a radio frequency amplifier, and create additional signals at the sum and difference frequencies of the original signals. In simpler words, when 2 or more signals collide they can create more noise and causing interference with the selected signals and can overload your receiver, that's why it is so important to always do a scan on every location and TX Advance helps with the most difficult part, knowing where to put your transmitters without causing intermod. There's also FreqFinder (available for Android and iOS) that helps with the calculation of intermod, it doesn't scan, but it sure helps if you have a better grasp of what you're doing.

    I am going to mod a trio of Sennheiser EW512 G4 receivers to have SMA connectors instead of the supplied permanent whip antennae. It will give me the option of just applying a whip antennae to the receivers in my bag, but also I can now implement an RF distribution system and butterfly antenna system. I am currently looking at the Deity SRD mini RF distro box and their BF-1 antennas. The SRD mini can be powered off my power distribution box so I still have the one swappable battery for the entire bag, but get the added signal of the butterfly antennae or any other passive antenna. I like the idea of being able to go back and forth based on the situation with little to no work.

    • @nicolasfieldsoundservices
      @nicolasfieldsoundservices 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sweet, seems like a solid plan. If I were in your shoes, I would look at the Betso Bowties. The reason for this is that the Deity Butterfly is 470 MHz-1 GHz and their distro similarly offers no filtering. If you want to give the front end filtering on your G4s a break, utilizing an antenna that attenuates more out of band frequencies will help secure your reception.

    • @The-Logician
      @The-Logician 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nicolasfieldsoundservices Thanks for that tidbit of advice. I did end up going with a pair of the Betso Bowties along with the SRD mini based on your recommendation. That made perfect sense to me. And the Bowties were a bit cheaper on price than the BF-1. They look really nice mounted on my sound bag. While I currently do not have diversity receivers, at least I am set up for the future that I can utilize diversity receivers when I can save up for more professional receivers. I have already modified the G4's. It was extremely easy to do (less than 10 minutes per TX/RX pair) and I have already seen a marked improvement in the reception of the G4's with proper sized SMA antennas. I am short my order on SMA jumper cables at the moment, so I still cannot test how much improvement the Betso's can/will provide yet but the cables are on their way. Slow boat from China.....

I’m guessing you usually have backup receivers with you just in case the MCR-54 stops working and you need a backup- Do you think my worry is justified? Do you think it’s better to go with 2 dual-receivers instead? I’d prefer lower bag weight/less cables so the MCR-54 looks very nice haha. Also I’ve found that it is cheaper than buying 2 of many dual channel receivers (like the Dual MCR-54 and Lectro SRCs)

The way I see it, with recording TX you technically won’t miss anything even if every other part of your recording system goes down. That being said if you’re anything like me you’ll eventually want another receiver because…channels! Haha. Great video. I’ve been deep-diving into lav mic mounting without the clips & my result involves gorilla tape.. Waiting on transparent double sided gorilla tape from Amazon… but so far.. regular gorilla tape will stick to a shirt ALL DAY!

      Cool I might have to try that out! I’ll admit to being a bit conservative with what I use because it’s proven to work well and I don’t like experimenting too much on location. I did buy something new today that looks pretty useful: Viviana Moleskin Extreme. It is moleskin with a wire inside it so you can shape troublesome fabric and create space for your lav!

      @@nicolasfieldsoundservices that's awesome. Might have to look into some of the moleskin. I will tell you, having a roll of Gorilla Tape (even the black kind) is definitely a good thing to keep on you in a pinch! Great video once again bro.

    Excellent video. I've been doing audio for corporate video, panel discussion webcasts and the occasion drama short film in Australia with Sennheiser G3 100 series and it's been mostly ok. Yes it has limitations but with careful management it's possible to get good results. I know that the producers/videographers I work with mostly do their own lav mics unless the project is bigger than two people on camera or has other reasons to bring in a location audio person. I was fortunate to spend a couple of days on the set of Furiosa in the Mad Max "universe" and got to sit in the audio van picking the brains of the guy who got an Oscar for the audio on Mad Max: Fury Road. There is certainly a step up in quality when you have the budget for it. Sadly I don't normally play in Australia's small feature film sandbox so at the moment I don't think I'd get a return on the investment to upgrade. For me the biggest bang I got for my limited buck was to upgrade mics to a Sanken COS11 or Countryman B3 from the standard ME2. That and having an auto-mixer for panel discussions is one of those things I never want to be without again.

      Thanks so much for this comment! Yes production sound is often more about the archer than the arrows ;). How amazing to have gotten to spend some time with an Oscar award winning sound team! That is super valuable. I’ve seen a video of him explaining his rig and I appreciated that he had crafted a pretty unique setup (multiple bit bucket recorders and an analog board) -I wonder if he’s still rocking that in 2024? Glad you found this channel, you’re always welcome here and let me know if there’s any topics you’d like me to explore! Cheers!

    What are your thoughts on the PHA60 after having it for a year now? Thanks!

    • @nicolasfieldsoundservices
      @nicolasfieldsoundservices 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Here’s the deal. The PHA60 approach has some pros and cons. Pros: utilizes existing transmitters, relatively inexpensive Cons: Awkward/clunky, doesn’t mount securely near the microphone end of pole (I added a rubber shim to help secure it), cabling is annoying and pricey. It’s really not the type of cable we tend to carry so you have to invest in backups. If a WTB60 is released I would definitely go for that over this solution. this is a good interim solution that I will still keep in my package as a backup when the new boom transmitter is eventually released. I think HMA style boom transmitters are a lot more elegant, easier to deploy and a bit more safe (fewer cables in the mix). FWIW I think a cool approach might be MTP61 and an Ambient phantom adapter.

      @@nicolasfieldsoundservices thanks so much for such a detailed response! I appreciate it! This all lines up with what I’ve been feeling about it. Been doing a lot of research to upgrade out of my Sennheiser kit. Narrowed it down to Wisycom MCR54 and MTP61/60 or A20 with A20/minis. I really think I’m leaning towards Wisycom for a number of reasons; transmitter battery time being a very big one. I do a lot of one man band run and gun stuff. With a little narrative thrown in. If you had to do it all over again, do you think you’d still go Wisycom?

    • @nicolasfieldsoundservices
      @nicolasfieldsoundservices 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Happy to help! Yeah I am super happy with the investment into Wisycom and will definitely be adding some more channels of symphony wireless eventually. The A20s are quite amazing too, I’m sure you’d be happy either way. I honestly went for wisy because the price to performance ratio was unbeatable
