    10:02 - (regarding mods to the machine) "bodge wire to the oscillator" The oscillator itself was not original I think. That's for the serial ports, early IIc's didn't have a dedicated oscillator for the serial ports, instead (in that position) they had a clock divider IC which created the serial port clock from the system's clock... but the resulting serial clock was about 3% too slow, meaning it could lose sync when talking to devices that were a little too fast. The oscillator itself is a mod. Whether it's a factory mod or a user mod, I don't know.

    • @retrotechguy
      @retrotechguy 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I was so jealous when my friend got the IIsi and I got the LC, which couldn't play any 640x480+ games. Apple was so good at selling inferior hardware at insane prices. I was an Apple Certified repair tech for a K-12 district (52 schools) for many years, eventually got tired of wasting gobs and gobs of taxpayer dollars on $400 hard drives and $900 motherboards, when a whole new PC with monitor was cheaper than that. Fortunately the taxpayers eventually got sick of it too and we saved over $100 million by switching to cheaper faster Windows hardware.

      Wow, cool - that’s pretty emulation meta. I’d like to do more stuff like that with my Amiga in the future.

    Are you sure about running OS/2 in emulation with SoftPC? OS/2 is very picky and fairly diffficult to run in emulation even on modern emulators. If you are looking for a machine to run classic Mac software and 486 class PC software, the PowerMac 6100 has an option for a DOS card, and the machines were fairly cheap. The DOS card itself can actually be used in some '040 quadra and Centris machines with a bit of finagling.

      I've been trying to retrace my steps to where I got that from and now all I can find is what it says at the end of this article: archive.org/details/MacWorld_8710_October_1987/page/n11/mode/2up?view=theater It seems like they were planning to do it but maybe didn't in the end. A DOS-card in a PowerMac would be pretty cool. I remember the card was quite pricey back in the day, and now they're very hard to come by.

    The copper shielding is for TEMPEST certification for COMSEC. The machine was likely used in a sensitive or classified facility. I've never seen it in a compact, Mac, mainly in purpose built machines and a few Zenith AT class PCs. By the late 90's they were allowing standard off the shelf PC's in most facilities. EDIT: Based on the price and the announcement in the magazine, these were almost certainly only sold to the government or companies working on a government contracts that required a certain level of security and data portability. It was common in secure facilities at the time to have to remove your hard drive and lock it up in a safe before going home to prevent information theft. How that squares with the inbuilt non-removable I can't figure though. Perhaps that was the OS drive and the removable drive was the scratch drive with active working papers.

      Interesting with TEMPEST. It does make one curious about the content of the hard drive in the drive dock - shame I couldn't get it working. Yes, security procedure may explain the SyQuest drive then if that was where sensitive material was stored. Maybe they just used the built-in one for booting and applications.

      @@retrotechguy You almost certainly wouldn't have found anything. At least if it If it was a USGI machine with actual classified on it that is. Regs, then and now, require the hard drives for anything actually codeword classified be physically removed before disposal and then mechanically shredded and then heated to the point where the metals become non-magnetic.

      @dennisp.2147 I see - yes then finding anything would seem highly unlikely. I don’t know much of its history - the man I bought it from had inherited it from his father-in-law here in Sweden, but the Drive Dock is US 110V.

    Now all you need to do is find some 4MB simms, and bump your ram up to 17MB! If you're feeling particularly froggy, it will also unofficially take 16mb simms for a total of 65 mb, but I'm not sure that would gain you much. It says a lot about Apple's engineering optimizations (or lack thereof) that you can increase the speed of the computer that much with a simple extension that pushes memory around. Don't be concerned about bumping the speed up to 25mHz either way you decide. In the early 90's it would have been a noticeable difference. It won't be in the 2020's. That being said, it you do decide to upgrade the crystal, it shouldn't be a problem for the CPU, even at this advanced point in its lifetime.

      Yes, If I ever get 16mb simms for mu SE/30 I might try them in the IIsi first! True about Apple and optimization...there seems to have been a lot of marketing strategy and segment positioning going apart from capable hardware. I probably will do the crystal upgrade - if I manage to get hold of the right one.

    Not sure if you already knew it but FYI just in case: Win2k does not run on top of DOS like windows 95/98/ME did, so its DOS compatibility was really not that great in comparison. If I was going to run a windows OS in an emulator to run DOS games, Id probably go for 98.

      Thanks, yes I'm aware W2K doesn't run from DOS - it's just that I happened to have those disks with VirtualPC and W2K from my dad. Such a strange sight with the Windows desktop on the iMac G4! But true, I do use DOS 6.22 with Windows 98 on my Compaq Armada 1750 that featured in a Short with some games recently.
