  • This week we are taking a look at the social media of the 80's and early 90's - Bulletin Board Systems or BBSs.
Few of us have land lines today and even fewer still have a dial-up internet connection so how do we connect to BBSs today?
Here is the previous video with the PowerBook 170:

I ran a BBS through most of the 90s. Even though the Internet was taking over most of the local BBS scene, mine seemed to grow in popularity as the others shut down and the users had fewer choices. On a normal day before the Internet came along, I'd be lucky to have my utilization hit 50%, but towards the end, it almost always hit 70%. The last full day mine was up, the phone line was in use nearly 19 hours, which was the highest utilization in by board's history at 78%.
I've tried several times to bring a newer version online, but the telnet BBS scene just isn't quite the same. It doesn't have the local flavor and was mostly just other sysops checking out a new board, then never logging in again. Maybe if I get old software going on actual old hardware, it might recapture the same spirit of the old scene and find a niche, but using modern BBS software on modern hardware just doesn't have the same feel. I've got plenty of retro hardware, so I might give that a go at some point.

Interesting, I imagine also it must have been hard also to publicise BBSs back in the day beyond local libraries or such. Do let us know if you get one going again on retro hardware!

Interesting video! Playing with this BBS stuff cost me 1200 DM on the first month back in 1990 when I got my first modem. BTW, you should learn to pronounce "Linux" correctly.

Thanks! Wow, that’s quite a sum.
I’ll consider it - his name is Linus though, init? :)

@@retrotechguy It is indeed, but he's from Finland. Not every country in the world has the same pronunciation.

Totally missed out on BBS period. I got my first computer when that era was transitioning to the internet. I've enjoyed trying a few on by C64 via a wifi adapter to get that mid 80's experience that I missed out on as a kid. One thing I have been meaning to try is to use my Quadra 700 as my main machine for work for shits and giggles. Setup a local telnet server on my Mac, and telnet in from the Quadra to do my work. Which is mostly console based coding and ssh'ing to linux boxes.

Yeah, it’s great BBss are still around for us to experience them - I’m hoping to get there with my C64 also one day. They Quadra telnet plan sounds cool! I’m hoping to use my PowerBook 170 for work writing once I’ve got some decent batteries inside.

Most computer owners didn't own a modem back then anyway bbs was very niche
