The NEW Gerber Strongarm Camp: Strong arm or Limp wrist?
มุมมอง 98118 วันที่ผ่านมา
Well, it doesn't live up to the reputation of its classic predecessor but how does this new blade compare to the other bushcraft/campy knives out there. After unboxing it, take a look and compare it to Esee, Joker, SOG and other Gerber's.
Mystery Ranch Wingman AFP Accessory Pocket
มุมมอง 154หลายเดือนก่อน
I take a first look at the Mystery Ranch Wingman AFP accessory pocket. The design is different from the others on the market with its attachment wings that include the sternum strap. I did have a bit of a quality problem out of the box but hope to resolve with customer service.
SOG Camp Axe: It feels like a toy!
มุมมอง 311หลายเดือนก่อน
I unbox and give my initial thoughts on the SOG Camp Axe. Sneak peak, if felt like a toy and not a hatchet nor axe. At 3:15, I then cut to a few weeks later and give my assessment and give you my thoughts for some good alternatives.

Viktos Counteract CCW Pack (15L)
มุมมอง 1.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the small EDC pack in Viktos' new Counteract line. They also have a smaller sling bag. The idea with these is that they have a dedicated CCW area that has a rapid presentation function. I like it because it has a completely separate storage than the rest of the pack, making it a great option for public areas where you might not want to present as overly tactical.
Mystery Ranch In and Out 22: One year later review
มุมมอง 1.6K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
I got back from a great trip and realized that I've had my Mystery Ranch In and Out 22 for a year now. Great time for a followup video. I talk about my experiences, how well it wore and some warranty issues.

Patagonia Stealth Work Station Chest Rig

Yet another chest rig review. I've been eyeing this for some time as a high quality, more inexpensive alternative to the more tactical chest rigs out there. I really like the versatility and low price of this one. cheers
SOG Terminus XR LTE: 4 Month Review HD 1080p

After an abortive attempt with this knife, I bought another and put it through its paces. Long story short. Love this super lite knife for Every Day tasks. It just disappears in your pocket and represents a very high value product.
Outdoor Research Shadow Insulated Cap

Bought this cap a few months ago and it has become my favorite every day hat for winter. Great in the rain (with a hood) and highly breathable, I've been using this for everyday use, hiking and cross country skiing.
SOG Pillar HD 1080p
มุมมอง 8008 หลายเดือนก่อน
Recently found a great deal on the American made SOG Pillar. This is definitely a hall of fame in the knife world and I understand why after a day of use. I share my first thoughts on it after putting it through a day of fire building, land clearing and food prep.
5.11 Skyweight "On-the-Go" Pouch: 2 month review and hacks
มุมมอง 2.8K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello, I've been using the 5.11 skylight pouch as a admin pouch, chest rig and hip pocket on my backpack for about 2 moths now. Super versatile little pouch for organization, hiking, travel, storage or anything else you can think of. Better than any other strap on chest pouch I own or have tried. Cheers
Fantastic review, watched your other review on it as well, really helpful. Ordered one to add to my work belt.
Great, glad you liked it. I find that I use it frequently due to its small size. Grab and go. Cheers
Looks really thin too. I don't really get this kind of axe. I think that they are designed for knife people. Hard to split anything without a baton. Thin and an axe with a tang???. Maybe just a bit far away from What I am used to for me.
Thanks for watching. I’ve been thinking I’ll put a finer edge on it and see how it works. Maybe it is more usable for camp tasks then. Cheers
Great selection of knives there, the knife in the title definitely wouldn't be the one I would choose. The principle looks good (I am not familiar with that one) and Joker knives are awesome. Nice video.
It’s a TOMAHAWK…….TOMAHAWK……not an HATCHET…
Why would you put that fixed blade above your weapon like that? Seems like it would impead the draw?
Pistol draw is from the right. Knife lays flat against the back and even provides a little structure to the kit bag. It is more of an up and out draw. I just like how everything is tucked away and clean.
Your Kobalt chainsaw in the video is literally built by Greenworks.... a _very_ budget tool brand.
I did end up returning the saw and replaced it with a cordless Makita. After using the Makita for about 2 years, the kobalt seemed more reliable. The Makita likes to throw its chain a lot.
@@mtnboy123 Sorry to hear that. But appreciate your honest take on the two chainsaws.
I was fortunate enough to get my Benchmade 162 back before the price skyrocketed and it is still one of my favorite and most trusted field knives. It isn’t for everyone’s taste, but it does everything I need it to do with no difficulty.
Same here. I picked up an extra one at the REI closeout on the knife. I think I paid like $120. Figure it is a good investment. Cheers and thanks for watching.
Are the pillars Saber grinded or hollow grinded?
Sabre grind
@@mtnboy123 If water gets inside the handle of S35VN steel, will it rust? Should I remove the handle periodically to clean it?
Is that the runner’s bag medium?
I think it is the large. I looked and no tag.
my traveler will not raise, it's not rocket science but i cannot tell why. Any suggestions?
Is there a fuel canister installed? Sometimes that can block the latch.
On another thought, if the clip for the CCW was a magnetic release buckle, that would work a lot better to be able to tear open.
That's a great idea. Merge that with a coloroed rip cord for quick access.
I really like your presentation of this pack. Not sure if it is the most evolved version that it could be.
thank you
Great review/overview. Love comparisons. 👍🏻 My personal opinion (and opinions are like belly buttons - we all have one) is that Gerber lost the plot somewhere along the line, and now basically makes knives for non-knife people. I could see a non-knife person buying that Gerber and sticking it on a backpack and forgetting about it. And maybe that's the best use for it? And that's ok, but I never fell for the strongarm craze, personally. Made in the US is a big seller, tho, for sure. I agree that the Mora (almost any Mora) would be a much better deal. Thanks for the look-see. 👍🏻
I agree with some of that. Most of their energy seems focused on the "Gerber gear" marketing approach where they are selling at Dicks, REI and other big box stores along with sporks and camp dish kits.. They do still have some solid military offerings but almost no tactical at all. Even their hunting offerings seem to be waining. For awhile, they were pretty committed to the bushcraft scene but their offerings were expensive and kind of uninspired.
Joker There's a lot of Bang for the buck
agree totally
Thanks for the review, MtnBoy.
Any time!
Good good job! Have a nice time! Ciao
Thank you! You too!
Thanks for the comment. You had an interesting point about the comparison of the Esee 4 and the lynx. The have very different design and manufacturing philosophies. Where the lyric is essentially hand made, the esee is more of a compilation of parts brought together and assembled. I have an esee 5 and am not as impressed with it as many other out there. The steel has a tendency to rust and needs a coat of oil. This prevent use as a food prep knife. The coating is a thick polymer and will definitely wear in time. I’d definitely go lynx over esee 4.
Do they make a smaller 5.11 version?
They have 2 versions of the chest pack. The one I reviewed and another smaller/simpler one I did not look at. If you’re not looking for a CCW, their pouch can be adapted for a small clip on pouch. See 5.11 Skyweight "On-the-Go" Pouch: First Look! th-cam.com/video/9kN37zKdbpg/w-d-xo.html
Great video....better video description than official website. thanks
Thank you, I try
Mine came standard on my Volkswagen.
Cool. Maybe different dealership order them with the cars. Mine came with a first aid kit and floor mats.
You need to take a short course in manufacturing economics. A lot of costs you didn’t consider. Made in the USA, worth the extra dollars in my book. Good video. Thanks for sharing.
Agreed, without going to school do you have any suggested references?
Nice one 👍
Thanks ✌️
Great video, thank you
No problem. glad you enjoyed it
Made in USA evertime!!! 🇺🇸
Yeah, in this case the bench made is (as far as I know) USA made. There is a supply chain in Portland Or. that allows knife companies (Gerber, CRKT, Kershaw, ZT, Leatherman) to completely source within the US. This not only includes materials, but also services such as heat treatment, coating, laser engraving, scales, and 3d milling. In fact, touring the Benchmade factory, you can see most of the process on the factory floor (not sure about heat treatment though). With some USA made knife companies, I'll research and watch factory tour videos and am not sure if the various inputs are all truly "USA made". It would be interesting to really dig into this and try to sus out the different between made and assembled in the USA. I like automobiles where they publish the % of foreign vs. local parts. With all that said, the current bench made is $400+. I just can't justify buying a work knife at that price point when there are so many high quality alternatives out there. I feel like Benchmade is more of a collectors piece now than something your going to work with.
How did you integrate fixed blade?
There is a sewn in nylon loop. I was able to slide in the knife sheath and clip in with strap guides. Knife is a SOG Altair fix
Ah ok. Looked like there were no loops on bottom so I was looking at snubby
@@sgrun100 the loops are on the inside of the compartment.
Very informative video, thank you sir
Your welcome. Cheers
Hard pass. Thanks for the review
No problem. Ironically, a great deal came up and I bought another one. I returned the first one and thought they deserved another chance. I was really satisfied with round 2: SOG Terminus XR LTE: 4 Month Review HD 1080p th-cam.com/video/rcGudNypJfY/w-d-xo.html
@@mtnboy123 I hear you, but it's a pricey knife and it should be perfect. The fact they make you pay return shipping isn't right. I'll think about it though lol.
I love my Kobalt 80-volt brushless 18" chainsaw with a 5-ah battery. - - I have (2) Kobalt 80-volt 18" Bar Chainsaws and use (2) 5 AH Batteries. Using it on a Southeast LA farm of 18 acres of tall large pine trees that was devastated by a Hurricane with a tornado. most of 10 acres nearly all down. The chainsaw has. been working great even cutting huge logs and trees up to 20"+ logs and it works like a great. And NO more pulling and pulling to start a gas-powered chainsaw. My first 80-volt 18" Bar Chain saw with a 5-AH Battery and charger was $400 in Jul 2021 and just this year bought the second one.
Great. I ended up replacing it with a Makita which, surprising, is quite finicky compared to the kobalt. I returned it, and Lowe’s was not into it but eventually was convinced. Cheers
What a crapper
thank you
Why did you not tighten the bolts?
The bolts sit in a slot with an open end. The more you tighten them the more you flex the slot open, thus popping themselves out.
Did i miss it, what color is this one? Ty
Mid watch. Kind of a blue grey
Lionsteel is much better quality and much better steels! Hands down Lionsteel is much better knives!
Materially and craftsmanship, I agree. Cost benefit is part of the equation. When I made the video you could get a B40 under $100. Now they are like $150! So Lionsteel has come come up in the market and deserves to. Looking at comparable prices today, I think I’d have to shift a little more in ESEE’s direction. Plus, ESEE is starting to make their classic knives in better steels like S 30v. Lionsteel has also offered models in better steel also. The whole question might deserve a second look.
@@mtnboy123 Esee only makes one knife in S35VN, don’t think they are planning more. But I don’t see them offering anything new in years!
thank you 🙏🏻 saved me a lot of headache !
No problem
We had a Jotul 602 but removed it and installed a Jotul 404 small wood cook stove because we love the oven !!!
I got to use one at a tiny house we were staying at. Cool unit.
COOL knife. I have it too and it's great.
I like the knife a lot. Lite, agile, lays flat against body so carries nicely. Still working on a good belt clip but making progress.
I’m liking it so far. Needs some work to make it a good belt knife though
I have a few cheap SOG fixed blades, and theyre tough as hell; way tougher than they have any right to be especially for the prices i paid. I have one that i use solely for batonning through knot filled wood, and its been twisted and bent in every way possible but its still kicking!
Although I have a few collector knives, it is getting much harder to justify them when they just go in a drawer. I guess, that is what has attracted me to SOG since they not only have good designs, but also above average quality and features for their class. Thanks for watching.
nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Please do the slight version next
Sling I presume. I can, but I am a 2 strapper through and through. Cheers and thanks for watching.
Hello, I don't have a Facebook unfortunately but I love Viktos and have all versions of their slings so far. Do you happen to know the 20% off code you talked about? I'd love to pick up this bag
Shure, the code was KALASH2024. Good luck. I also saw an advertisement for a 30% sale for may on GOVX is you qualify. Cheers
@@mtnboy123 Thx for code!. Worked like a charm.
That's a nice pack for purpose. 👍🏻
Hopefully, I started to use it on errands this morning and still need to load it out. Cheers
haha, with my wife, we have exactly the same combo, same colors :) Recently I've done Gozo costal trail (Malta) with Scree only and tent in it (just added mesh bag on the front) :)
Very cool! I’ll add that trip to my todo list. I imagine you don’t need much in terms of clothing or a particularly heavy sleeping bag. I’m going to experiment this summer by backpacking with a 50L mountaineering pack instead of a traditional backpacking. Not only lighter, but much more minimalistic. Thanks for watching.
Got my bushcrafter for 160$, once a knife gets discontinued my knife dealer sell em for whole sale price
Yes, with the new bushcrafters coming out, I’ve been seeing a lot of clearance. For $170, I’d still pickup especially compared to upper $300’s street price for new ones.
Especially since the older model is just to me personally better, and I’ve used both so I can respectfully put my three cents in
considering packaging, shipment, free leatherpouch, the margin will be even lower. So you really get a good value. Thats what I like about "newcomers". They have to have good products to be convicing. Also they listen to critique. Dont get me wrong, they are not newly founded, but I think the hype for bushcrafting/outdoor brings them attraction from people that never knew this brand existed
Yeah, same could be said about lion steel which is now getting mainstream and the prices are going up.
I have three Benchmade knives, I won’t buy anymore. I like them but for what you get you pay too much.
Agreed. Unless you find a major deal on one, it’s hard to justify buying anymore.
Great info, thanks!
No problem
this is a very good review of this pack. Thank you sir!
Glad it was helpful!
If you are in Singapore go to Outdoor life in funan plaza or Surburban in Hong Kong. Both great range of mystery ranch products. Both have great customer service.
Ironically, the best gear shop in Hanoi in a sea of knockoffs was named “not a fake”
I’ve used the 19L since 2018 and tried many other highly rated bags but nothing beats Mystery Ranch
Cool, thanks for watching
