Humphreys Peak (x2!) - AZ state high point - Flagstaff, AZ
Humphreys Peak is the high point of the state of Arizona. Located in Flagstaff, AZ, this peak is over 12,600' and is part of the San Francisco Peaks, which used to be one large volcano (San Francisco Peak) that stood around 16,000' high. For a western state high point, this is a pretty easy (on par with Wheeler Peak in New Mexico) hike.
For other videos, please see my videos on the Flagstaff traverse (summitting the four highest peaks in the area) and the plane wreck and going offtrail up the mountain.

San Gorgonio via Vivian Creek - Southern California's Highest Peak!
มุมมอง 310วันที่ผ่านมา
Mt San Gorgonio, or San Gorgonio Mountain, is an iconic mountain in southern California. Higher than Baldy or Mt San Jacinto, San Gorgonio clocks in at 11,500' above sea level. I hiked this from the Vivian Creek Trailhead but there are many trails that lead up to its summit, but all are fairly long hikes.
Buckskin Gulch - The World's Longest Slot Canyon! - White House to Wire Pass Day Hike
มุมมอง 34014 วันที่ผ่านมา
Buckskin Gulch is a famous long slot canyon that runs northwest to southeast, eventually ending in the confluence with the Paria River, which then runs down to the Colorado River at Lee's Ferry. I went point to point from the White House trailhead to the Wire Pass trailhead, then hitched a ride back, but many people backpack it. This is located south of Highway 89 between the towns of Kanab, UT...

South Guardian Angel and North Guardian Angel are two offtrail peaks accessed easiest from the Wildcat Canyon Trailhead off Kolob Terrace Road. North Guardian Angel is a pretty easy bag not too far off the Northgate Peaks trail.

      hey thanks for watching! I posted all this 14er videos all at once when I started my channel in August so they got like no views :( This was 2 summers ago and I can't say I can even recall the road at this point anymore...I didn't have a high clearance 4wd but did have an SUV rental car I was sleeping in (Ford Edge or something similar). I'm guessing the road was fine as I tend to remember the rough one (or often have to park at the 2wd parking and hike up roads)

    • @HikingEngineer
      @HikingEngineer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      aha i remember now! The road is pretty rocky and narrow at parts. The narrowness made it tougher than the rockiness, and I'm not sure what you would do if a car was coming the other way at some narrow portions. But my standard SUV made it, but definitely a little unnerving in a couple parts. I did Handies right after these from the same parking spot

    I realize as you do more miles that adding a few more is no big deal. But if you want a luxury, park your car at the BA trailhead, call the Xanterra taxi to bring you to the SK trailhead. It is $15 for a single person last time I went. I think each additional person is $5 more. Then you get all your miles just in the Canyon and not running to/from car. You top out and you are right at your car. No bus crowd to deal with. The highest luxury is just getting a room at BA lodge. Topping out and going straight into a shower and meal is incredible.

    No class 4 on Mt Muir if you are on route, but you can easily veer into class 4 if you do not recognize good routes. It's not hard class 3 climbing. There are places with exposure, but the climbing is easy. Once you have done true class 4 routes, you know the difference. Class 4 routes involve harder moves as well as exposure. Heck, class 2 can have significant exposure, so exposure is not the sole factor.

    • @HikingEngineer
      @HikingEngineer 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I understand the difference between exposure and the technicality YDS ratings of scrambles and climbs. In my opinion, there were some class 4 moves on Muir. It's possible I could've taken better lines but it agreed with beta I had read. That's why I recorded so people could see! But I do a lot of class 3/4/5 stuff as I'm sure you've seen

    • @dmbeaster
      @dmbeaster 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@HikingEngineer I agree with you. I have noted a lot more people posting videos about mountaineering, and a tendency to rate things as class 4 that are not. The problem with that is inexperienced people, inspired by little more than TH-cam info, thinking wrongly that they can therefore do class 4 because they scrambled up a route overrated as class 4. Distinguishing between 3s and 4s can de tricky as there is plenty of borderline terrain. But newer climbers better be confident about rock craft before they go try a true 4. I have seen videos of young enthusiastic scramblers on very hard terrain with poor rock skills - just adventuring their way up. It reminds me of descriptions of climbers 90 years ago just making it up as the first in the High Sierra. No reason to be that crazy.

    I did this hike about 50 years ago. There was a metal box (reset) at the top of the peak that was cemented into a small group of jagged rocks with a lid and a hinge. Inside of it was a book and a pencil for writing your thoughts about the hike and the view. It was a great diversion and reward to read everyone else's comments while resting a bit before heading down. Some funny, some very poignant as well. Oh, and the cactus. I was a bit surprised how close you were putting your hands to the cactus (and knew it was only a matter of time), since that stuff will shed a bit and be on the ground and the rocks around the cactus. I have a video on the full traverse to hit all 4 peaks as well (just did it in April)! That's a lot more exciting with much more tough climbing. But yes I run into cactus quite a bit in my offtrail adventures
