Great video. Surely we should be trying to achieve more out of less weight if hypertrophy is the goal? Therefore if there is no difference in growth between slow and fast eccentrics then a slow eccentric would be superior. I like Menno but as you point out here he is getting very jumbled between strength output and muscle growth. Sometimes I feel like he uses a bit of mental gymnastics to justify a contrarian approach just because he enjoys have a different viewpoint to conventional wisdom.

Super relatable, Ben. The mental grind is fierce. The constant weighing, timing & food selection. There is definitely a stress and pressure one feels. Not too mention, being constantly sped up, as you referenced. The opposing actions of trying to build/maintain tissue while cutting calories is unlike any other endeavor I can think of. I'm glad you've landed in this spot. Keep crushing the gym and content 👊🏻

I have so many thoughts: 1. I wonder how much of what you described (many of which sound like ADHD symptoms) are fuelled by an under-glucosed prep brain? I experience this but I have never heard someone else describe it in a bodybuilding context. 2. Do you think some of that "need" to be consuming/doing, is essentially a need for distraction for the inherent suffering of prep?
@@VeganProteins hmm I'm not sure. I think I still experience these things during my off-season, just not as extreme. I like the way you're thinking though, now it's got me pondering

This is my coach and I say that with so much confidence and pride, truly an inspiration. The way ben articulates his thoughts and experience is an art something I need to get better at. I have a speadsheet just like that lol, I add up the calorie deficit to get my "ideal weight", and its funny to see my weight fluctuate around that line. Can you participate as a first timer in ametuer worlds in Boston? I would love if I could join

Damn good stuff your absolutely diced I do the same PPL as you! I do Push + Arms, Legs, Pull + Arms, Calves & Abs repeat I just turned 18, 6' 190Ib 16-17% bf, and I've been cutting down for my first show in the winter, I've been at 1500 calories for 2 weeks, and before that 2000 for 4 weeks, and my weight has stayed the same, you seem like you know what your talking about, do you have any advice? I'm still getting stronger in the gym and my energy levels are fine (with enough caffeine). I'm also doing a cardio sport which will be 2 hours of cardio a day, do you have any advice on preserving gains?
Hard to give blanket advice without more context, but make sure you're also taking photos & measurements to go along with the scale because I'd be surprised if you cut 500 calories and you're doing 2 hours of cardio and still plateaued. For preserving muscle, try to keep your strength for reps as you diet down and don't lose too fast.
