Autistic Not Alien | Myth Takes
Myths are entertaining illusions. Autism myths are offensive to autistic people who are actually real. Autistic people are not on a par with dragons and sky fairies, nor are they lesser than neurotypical people. Myths are an excuse not to think, and by generalising autistic people, they dehumanise autistic individuals.

It’s not a good idea to go around diagnosing people as autistic. It’s worse to go around un-diagnosing autistic people. In the first instance, you’re probably relying on a stereotyped view of autism. I got to "you preferred not to wear clothes as a child" and REALLY felt your pain. 😂 My mum just loves to tell anyone and everyone about how she'd dress me, put me in the car (early 1970s, no seatbelts back then), and by the time we got to the supermarket, I'd be completely naked. I swear even the postman knows this.

    Have you seen Lost? I had watched it when it was on, but my life got crazy around season 4 but never finished it. So recently I did. It’s a great show, and definitely an underrated show in my opinion. I also loved Farscape and Firefly. A good horror comedy movie is Tucker and Dale Vs Evil and another is Shaun of the Dead. Can you tell my special interest is film and tv? I have suggestions for days, but these are a few of the ones that came to mind if you loved Stranger Things- also The Ghostbuster franchise (old and new) are also fun. Another of my lifetime special interests is medicine (as well as history), so asylums have always been a fascinating subject for me. American Horror Story Asylum is good as well as the one with Witches and the first one as well as the carnival one, if you like horror- the other series of that show though were pretty bad. Thanks for letting me expound upon some of my special interests! That’s always fun.

    You video brought up an issue I have been dealing with for the past 3 months. I also have the problem of having a late LATE diagnosis (almost 50) and all that goes with that as well as children that are now in their 20’s who are absolutely definitively neurodivergent- who also don’t understand autism and what that means so cannot recognize it in themselves or me. I’ve been diagnosed for 6 years but haven’t seen my oldest, who lives in another state for many years and I recently saw him again the day my father died. After I had watched my definitely undiagnosed but very autistic father die in the hospital over 3 days, and had sat with his body for hours with my also undiagnosed (but who absolutely agrees with me that she is also Audhd ) mother. I drove from the hospital that day to visit my son for the first time in 6 years. The the entire visit he argued with me that I couldn’t possibly be autistic. Somehow, he accepted my adhd diagnosis for me but not the 2 doctors who diagnosed him with adhd as a child (at 4 by his pediatrician and a psychiatrist at 8). No, they were quacks and the doctor who diagnosed my autism was also mistaken. He claimed I was “NORMAL”. And he asked me why I “WANTED” to be autistic.? 7 years of a special interest in Audhd and hundreds of hours of reflection of my life before and after diagnosis I feel like I’m somewhat knowledgeable, and I feel like he only knows my mask- now I don’t know how to act around him at all anymore. I don’t know what to say to him. The last few years I’ve worked so hard and dropped so much of my mask (and my desire to do so), only to be told that now I’m just acting like this, for what, exactly? What does it benefit me? We were so close until he moved out at 24, and I can’t seem to come to grips with how to handle this. It’s devastating, frankly, to have him think that I’m what, imitating an autistic person because I want attention? From whom, exactly, all my friends? My internet followers? I don’t have those! My doctors? They believe me, and it’s not like I’m getting any treatment or medications from them anyway. What is it I have to gain from saying this? I have guilt because I did not know about autism earlier in his life, I think it’s breaking my heart he would think this about me. Sorry for the oversharing, I couldn’t possibly be autistic with the way those statements that were said to you inflamed me and sparked this rant! 😉 I’m wondering what does this “Institute” think meltdowns are? 😂 I’m certain this idiot also doesn’t understand the double empathy problem, either! 😂

I'm curious as to your relationship with guitars. I've been playing guitar since I was a teen and I'm just about 40 now, just discovered my AuDHDness and got diagnosed last month. I've come to the realization that my relationship with guitar is way more complex than I had considered prior to that. I think that my relationship with guitar is 70% therapeutic. For one, it is a giant, complex stim! Its tactile, auditory, visual, and even emotional, all wrapped up in one activity. And guitars themselves are fun to have and collect, so it tickles that autistic need in me for organization, collection, and categorization, as well as the more embodied stims.

This TH-cam channel is my guitar collection - I like having an organised assortment of work to share. I also write poetry, and I enjoy the writing, categorisation and - hopefully - publication. As I said in this video, I love being creative. I love being in a 'flow state'. The happiest I've been was when I was making the terrible 'Teddy Scare' (it's on my other TH-cam channel). A 37 year-old-man shouldn't be cheekily making a film about possessed teddy bears on a university campus, but it was the best fun. However, needless to say, it doesn't pay the bills.

    I cannot hear tones, nor can I speak them. This makes it impossible to learn tonal languages as I have personally discovered. My version of expression is by volume. The more excited I am, the louder I speak, until I'm almost yelling. People start yelling back at me and question why I am so angry, or why I'm always trying to start an argument. My x-wife is testament to that. Little did I know at the time. And seemingly I only start 'yelling' at people that I am closest to because they are the only ones that I feel comfortable with enough to share my 'expressions' about something I am passionate about. Others do not understand when I try to explain that I am just excited. I'm not yelling, I'm not angry. I'm passionate. It often makes my question why I bother speaking at all. So misunderstood.

    You could re-write the article and post it. It’s great education for everyone to better understand the importance of how we use language to communicate (wrongly at times).

    Great to see you being bold, Neil xx (Sorry for edits, just being fragile. Need the community and can't risk messing it up.) I'm interested in the fact that your algorithm's as bad as mine. Maybe the intersection of meaning and blind heuristics hasn't worked very well, which places 'AI' in the same bin as the paperless office or convenient modern banking. Do you ever think the grand technological revolution of this century has kinda failed? To what extent do you really think the world's meaningless by the way? I've encountered quite a few science-enthusiasts who have made this startling claim, yet they all seem to have warm human interests and a care for other people. This anti-autism stuff is serious. We need a strategy I think. Looking to you, thought-leader sir! (My grug brain says start with getting Baron Cohen out of the 'diagnosis' process with his stupid deficit/disorder model institutionalised right into the heart of Our NHS. He had his moment in the sun and gave us _the extreme male brain type_ which is possibly worse than the vaccine theory: sexist as well as ableist, yet still pathologising. )

      Interesting that you mention Baron-Cohen. I've just watched an I'm Autistic, Now What? video, in which Megan makes a similar point about him.

    My Psychologist told me I exhibited many Autistic Traits, and in the same sentence said that I didn't need another label to add to my depressive state. I later found out (late last year) that that was Autistic Burnout, and that the label that I then gave myself helped me to be more forgiving and understanding about my shortcomings and allowed me to understand myself better without the help of my Psychologist.

    • @AutisticNotAlien
      @AutisticNotAlien 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I really don't know why people are so anxious about labels. It's good to know what things are! For me, TH-cam has been far more useful than a psychologist in terms of recognition and support.

    One of my bosses, also an R. Sole, guaranteed me that I would never be able to get another job in the field, when I candidly walked out after being taken advantage of. He was right. He went out of his way to tarnish my name in the industry. Far Canal.

    This is rather comedic, albeit in a disturbing way. Really resonated with why Autistic Enthusiasm is so difficult to appreciate. It's always taken as an I'm better than you reply, when we are just trying to share and show how we connect and relate to an experience.

    • @AutisticNotAlien
      @AutisticNotAlien 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It annoys me that people interpret my knowledge sharing as an ego trip. I'm autistic and traumatised - how could I even contemplate being superior to anyone?
