This Yardworks Lawnmower Won't Mulch Or Mow
Purchased this Yardworks Mulch & Mow Lawnmower for the engine, and transmission, as we have a better deck to replace it, but unfortunately we need more than just a quick engine service to get this one running.

When Free Isn’t Easy: Repairing a Weed Eater That Won’t Start!
New subscriber here. Do you own a tach? Which province are you from?
Hey !! Thank you so much for subscribing. I do own a Tach, actually. I have misplaced it, so that's why I was adjusting by ear. Hahaha! I do need to get a bit more organized... I'm on Southern Ontario 😊
i think its the key way pin
Nah, it would have a lot more difficulty starting, and likely would not, or would not run.
Get new coil or clean the coil
Actually, believe it or not, in the end, it turned out that the coil was fine. It was the handle of the mower, where the cable connects to the plastic bushing. The bushing mount had failed, and so the bushing would slide up and down, and never actually create tension on the brake cable. As soon as I saw that, it was a simple fix with a washer and an eye-bolt.
I have a OVH mower and it’s like this mower sometimes
Well, a little hiccup here and there, not a big deal. I mean, it's better than when it was vomiting oil, and looking like a Cheech and Chong marathon!
@ I think you had forgotten to put the o-rings back on to the carburetor to go onto the intake that may be the issue if you don’t have it on it 👍
I'm not sure, but I'll go back and check. Never know, could also be a cracked intake, but you'd figure that it'd be pulling in unmetered air, and thus should cause a lean condition?
@ unsure it’s either the intake or the o-rings missing but at least 🤞it’s not internal damage. I’m about to put an short video on about a Viking mower I have and I’ve never seen a blade rust so badly
hahahaha! My brother in law's Zero Turn was leaving strips all over the place while he was mowing.. I laughed my ass off when I saw the blades.. They looked more like spoons, than blades, they were so round.. His wife told me "Oh, we haven't gotten them sharpened this year." It looked like they hadn't sharpened the blades since day one! 🤣🤣 And they want people to switch to battery electric?! With how people barely care for their gasoline equipment? Oh lordy, we're going backwards!
Have you tryed the intake
Like a cracked intake pipe? usually that would cause a LEAN condition, not a rich condition. But that is a possibility to take a look at... Thanks for the suggestion
nice repair! I thought for sure you would just turn it into a parts mower after the first video, but you took it that extra step.
I've got a stubborn streak, so I had to see if it could be saved! 😁
I lost 3 fingers to a similar snowblower almost 3 years ago. I laugh about it now. Actually, I was making jokes about it in ER that day.
Oh my! That's not good.. glad you laugh about it now, because honestly what else can you do? A teacher in school had lost the tip (last knuckle) of his finger, and would joke about getting a 10% discount on manicures 😂
@ I use the 30% discount joke a lot. Also the “being shorthanded “ joke.
hahahaha! I love it!
Totally agree because I found out the hard way luckily not bad but scary
Oh dear!! Well I'm very glad You're okay 😊
@ thanks I was trying to figure out how to lower the idle speed screw
What website for "non working mowers" in the Pearland Texas area or surrounding areas?
I honestly just use Facebook Marketplace, to be honest for my area. I know, everyone can be kinda flakey on there.
Kohler engine on those sometimes
Really? I can't say I've seen one yet, but I've only seen a handful of these lawnmowers. They've pretty much only been the GSV190, but I don't doubt it. Not everyone likes Honda engines.
Oh
Easy fix
There shouldn't be oil coming out of breather would a piece of heat shrink work?
@@mikehrdlicka8635 oil out of the breather means too much pressure in the crank case. Heat shrink won't work. Could be too much oil in the engine
Well when a person doesn't know how to fix ( or get one to run,,) then its labeled " Junk"😕
Yes
Determination!
I had one
It was fun using this. I kept it for a bit, but decided to send it on its way.
I had one
Tecumseh engines.i have a "few" on toros and Murray mowers
I usually find Tecumsehs on MTD, and ya, Toro (Lawnboy). Murray I find a lot of Briggs, however I *DO* have a cursed Murray that had a Tecumseh, but a bent crank later..
Ése lo tengo tengo que hir poco a poco con usted para arreglarlo. Pero como es es inglés se me hace difícil.
Appreciate you watching, and apologize for the lack of translations into other languages. I hope you were able to go thru the video, and able to get your Weed Eater going!
What’s a cluth?
A Typo! hahahah! I never noticed, I'll fix that, thanks for the heads up :)
Whoop whoop! Another success 😁 I'm surprised the engine overcame the chain brake. I have a couple of Stihl saws and they don't accelerate if the brake is on. Maybe that's different if it's already in motion? Good stuff!
@@TractorFella it was a weird on. I asked about that, which is why he was confused that it happened..
@Mike-anic yeah... I'm pretty sure the chain is supposed to stop dead so you don't rearrange your face if it kicks back. Oh well, the mystery loves on!
It does.. I'm confused by it too, but maybe when you're giving it the beans, it's enough to overcome the brakes, kinda like smoking the tires on a RWD vehicle..
I'm working on a Tecumseh mower now
@@gradyhernandez4699 sweet! Enjoy 😊 I have an interesting one upcoming that a coworker dropped off.. oh dear!
Tecumseh i like too
@@gradyhernandez4699 I enjoy the challenge. They're a lot of fun, and a good, healthy way to continue to challenge yourself
Use a correct socket dude
If you're referring to using a 11mm over a 7/16" then you're being foolish. 11mm and 7/16" are the same size. 7/16" is equal to 11.11mm....
I like troy Bilt mowers.
Haven't had a chance to work on one yet.
The fuel seat is rubber
I know. I am taking a chance. I had misplaced the tool for removing it, and used up my last seat... so I decided to risk it, and it paid off. That's why I also showed the float being "PARALLEL" with the carb, to show it hadn't swelled. But you are 100% right, and normally I would replace the seat. I have some more on order, just takes time for them to come in. It was during recording that I realized I didn't have any more.
nice score! good job cleaning out that carb, and especially that petcock. "Shut Up Greta!" hahhahaha Ollie is growing so fast!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 🍻
I love trash find lawnmowers I have 4 in my yard I found one has nothing wrong with it they put the blade on backwards and to much oil i already fix it and im using it in my yard it has a Honda engine on it also its from 2022 and the blade is new on it
Oh wow! Now that's a score and a half.. I just keep finding these MTDs in the trash hahah!
Hi, Ollie!!
He's just so darn cute, definitely the star of the show hahah!
I'm amazed the mower ran missing parts in the carburetor, that was bizarre! I would never have expected it to run missing the spring
Same. I didn't expect to see it missing a spring, considering it was running okay, just not very well, but it was actually running, which was bizarre to see. Should be definitely running in Part 2! Stay tuned!
I really like your videos, also if it's the first i see, but you stimolate me to do the same things just for fun or give a second chance to a machine in the trash. Thanks you so much❤
hahah! They are a lot of fun! I really enjoy working on these. Take your time, it can be very rewarding!
It sounds like the Engine out off time
Oh it wasn't out of time, it was actually a dirty carb. I had this thing for almost 10 years, and it was a 1970s model I got from my late grandfather. He used to work for Sears, in their service department. Really wish I knew how to have fixed this mower when it finally gave up on me.
A lot of oil burning of..."How dare you "Greta " lol..epic cut
😂
where do you find these things? sometimes you should just leave these in the trash, they're likely there for a reason
I find them in the trash, on garbage day, sometimes just thrown to the curb. Usually there because they stopped working, and the owner couldn't be bothered to get it fixed. It's unfortunate, but at least I'm usually able to get it going, saving it from a landfill.
Normally they need a new keyway . As it shred it often when hitting something.
Normally, unless they shear the pins on the blade adapter, which happens, or break the blade adapter, which also happens. Thankfully this one doesn't look like it's done either!
@@Mike-anic yeah true that espechially with Honda ,i got several briggs and stratton lawnmowers for free, even expensive models where the keyway was shredded :) got a 1700 dollar honda mower for free this summer at a repairshop..was only the kill switch glitching
@@Mike-anic True that yes. Greetings from Northern Norway :)
Greetings! Lovely to talk to others across the pond, and get to learn about the industry world wide. :) I'm jealous of your Honda, what a lovely score to get. I have a Briggs where the Key has got to be sheared... Keystart, pretty sure previous owners hit something
@@Mike-anic yeah..briggs keyways made of aluminum . i got loads of 5hp horizontal B&S engines.. 1985 5hp IC iron cast sleeve) from a big field mower ,still look like new as the summer is very short up here north .lol ,and a 1997 Funpower from a dingo cross cart which only had a totally torn carburetor diaphragm, was the original one still in, so of course the engine had refused to start .wealthy people stored it after their kid grew out of it so i asked them to sell me the engine cheap . hardly used .looks new, no scores in cylinder at all .im kinda collecting and restoring older briggs and stratton
hi mike , wgainoody here, we talked about my mower month or so ago ,cleaned carb again ran wide open and while trying to adjust the govenor again the blade bolt broke : / havent messed with it since , thought you may be curious since you were so kind as to offer some help, much appreciate you and your videos , thanks again
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. Well, running wide open means it was running, not surging, or starting and dying, so that was a start. Weird the crank bolt broke. There are some great mechanics on Reddit in the r/smallengines that can offer really good assistance too, and can also post photos. Perhaps when TH-cam opens up Communities for all creators it might make assistance a lot easier. :) Hope you do get it sorted, however now being the end of season, sometimes might be better off watching to see if anyone is trying to toss a similar mower, possibly with a toast deck, and you can just make an engine swap. Cheers!
@@Mike-anic may wait till spring to see about getting it out, much appreciate you and your help
I have bought 4 Mowers in the past 6yrs.. Not even 4 hours of Run Time on any of them. 2 from Walfart... I mean Walmart.. First one, the Engine was still good but the Frame Rotted all the way around the Base of the Engine and the Engine Fell to the ground less than a Month of owning it.. Second one, the Frame is still good 5 yrs later but the New Plastic Carbs Melted from the Alcohol in the Gas and then Rusted Internally.. so could not be started. First/Second from Walfart. Third one from Amzon and lasted 2years. 3r year it said "F'u.. I am not Starting".. Again, Plastic Carb.. Would have cost more to Fix it than to just buy a new one.. The New Forth one is only a Couple Months Old and is Still Starting so far but still only less than 3 hours on it.. Done mowing for the Season, Maybe one more time.. But using Actual 100% Gas, No Alcohol in it Gas.. at $4 Per Gallon Also have a Craftsman Weed Eater that has less than 3 hours on it and It won't Start after sitting all Winter because I used the Gas with Alcohol in it and forgot to Drain it.. 100% Gas was Not available in my area yet.. So they Plastic Carb Melted.. And will Cost More to Fix it at $90per Hour Min.. than to just buy a new one... PHUCK These New Plastic Carbs! Bring Back the Metal Ones where they could sit all Winter and with just Two Pulls, Start Right up the next Spring.. Hell, One Pull If you Prime it First..
Yeah, the modern mowers are really not very well built, but those old Briggs engines from 30 years ago had plastic carbs. 40, even 50 years ago, had plastic carbs. I'm hoping I can get my hands on a model from the 1970s to show the plastic carb on those. They will run fine, and last many years on our E10 fuel that we're forced to run. I want to try to make some Ethanol free fuel, see how well it works. "The Fuel Companies don't want you to know this one secret..."
@@Mike-anic Yeah but Completely Different Type of Plastic than they use today. Not all mowers had plastic back then. At least not the ones we used. No, I could not tell you what brands. I was 5 when I started mowing and the Mowers where already beat to hell and back..
I'm entirely not disagreeing at all about modern mowers. They're junky engines, made to break, which is ridiculous. Thankfully these flatheads can last for a couple decades easily with proper maintenance. The original carb SHOULD be able to keep this thing running.. We'll see.. we'll see
@@Mike-anic What about getting a Big Enough Carb from a R/C Engine? They are Metal.. They Make 4 Stroke R/C Engines..
I know a bit about Nitro engines. Funny you mention them, as @Tractor Fella dropped a video today servicing a couple of Nitro engines. Was a pretty neat video, especially as I'm also into RC Planes and the such :)
another junk mower, saved by Mikeanic
Hahah not saved yet, but it's not condemned. The little engine really seems to want to run. I plan on making sure it does in Part II
Love an ole Classic engine. They always run. I have NEVER had good luck with the chinese carbs for these machines. I have found that the tubes on them are about 1/4" shorter than the OEM and they don't remove (they break, so I guess technically they remove). I've never had luck getting one to prime either. I've also had one with the butterfly on the carb get stuck inside the intake at WOT. However, they are GREAT for spare carb parts - I've had to swap the post before bc they broke trying to remove the gov rod. I would swap the spring from the aftermarket carb over to the OEM and put it back on. The tanks are usually fine, though, and good to keep on hand for spares, since they tend to rust or get holes over time.
I'm going to scavenge the spring out of the carb, and put it in the old one, this way it's got an OEM carb on it. The other tank isn't bad at all, so I'll swap it all. But definitely going to crack the head to inspect it, I am not sure what I think of how it's running... But the governor could simply be out of adjustment.. Thanks for watching, and commenting :) Appreciate it!
@@Mike-anic I would have checked the intake when you had the recoil off (perhaps you did and I missed it). They're prone to the screws coming loose and/or cracking - I had to replace 3 this year alone. If the governor moves freely without being connected, I'd be surprised if it's out of adjustment; it's possible but I've only encountered that one or two times in the past 5 years. Hope once you get the OEM carb back on, it'll run just fine.
The Carbs also Melt from the type of gas you use and the type of Plastic they use.. Have to use 100% Gas and NOT the Stuff with Alcohol in it of Any Amount.. See my Comment on what happened to me with these new mowers.. PEACE and God Bless Brother!
I actually didn't check, I'll make sure to check it on the next time thru it. Really not wanting to crack the head, but I might have to if the engine still has issues with the OEM carb..
It's kinda sad that it happens with these new carbs. Briggs used to have really good build quality, but now that they're owned by a Financial Holdings company, it's not the same.
I'm learning alot brother. Never opened OHV cover to adjust valve lash. Similar to spark plug gap.ty Mike
