If Your Engine Does This, It Might Fly Apart!
In this Lawnmower Repair video, we're repairing a Mastercraft Lawnmower that is racing out of control. The RPMs are just flying out the engine, and it's not a good thing to see.
Will I be able to get this engine under control? Or will it fly apart before our very eyes!

Tiller Troubles? This ONE Causes Bruised Knuckles and Won't Run!

Today we're repairing a Craftsman Tiller with a Tecumseh Eager-1 Engine that doesn't want to start and run. It just wants to hurt you! I have tried starting this, only to my detriment as it pulled the cord out of my hand, and gave me a good rap on the hand with the pull handle, plus many bruises here and there. I think it's time to find out why this won't start, and won't run! Is it the key? Or...

    It's coming from the cranke case filter from being on it side and to much oil in the cranke case the oil stick in these modules you screw the dip stick back down for correct oil level.

      Well, the oil wasn't in the engine anymore, it was in the gas! Lol Definitely from being on its side, that's for sure!

      No, but magnetism doesn't care about rust.. although I do understand, because of the buildup can reduce the gap, dropping the consistency of the spark. Thankfully it wasn't that, but a problem with the bail after all said and done. I managed to fix it and sell it on. 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting 🍻

    Since Mastercraft is made by MTD, it's a great thing you selected the Tecumseh engine, because most Mastercraft lawn mowers are equipped with Tecumseh engines. Although, it's great that the shroud cover color matches the deck color.

    • @Mike-anic
      @Mike-anic 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Haha thanks! I actually had to repaint the shroud, as it had a lovely shade of rust brown across it. Since it was going on this deck, I figured I should paint it to try to match, which I did. I sanded it, and painted it up. Worked out great, but the paint colour is just subtly different, until you put them together, then you see the difference. The top is "VOLKSWAGEN GREEN" like you'd see on a Golf R. I used a paint flake from the body to match it

    I have a feeling that you have the wrong flywheel for that application, even if its' the right one for that engine - it looks like a lightweight flywheel for a lawnmower application, where you'd want a heavy flywheel for the tiller - there's not enough mass in the light flywheel for proper inertia when starting.

    • @Mike-anic
      @Mike-anic 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's baffling.. I haven't changed anything from when I got it, but I wouldn't put it as an incorrect summation of the situation at hand. it's a PITA to start, kind of like a lawnmower without a blade on it... I almost feel like replacing it with a dead Pressure Washer Engine, and see if that makes a difference. Who knows, maybe a good 4.5HP Briggs Quantum will mate up with it nicely and be a solid monster of a tiller. Perhaps a future project, as I won't be selling this machine off any time soon, I need it!

    There's a few variations of those engines. It's likely made by Loncin and was during a time frame before B&S and Kohler filed a claim that the Chinese were dumping engines below cost into the US so there are now insane tariffs against the engines coming in from China. That's why you'll see them in the 2018-2020 time frame, and then it kinda just stopped. Instead, we're stuck with the crappy new B&S with the plastic carbs lol. I almost consider this the ugly duckling that came from a Honda & Kohler offspring. There's similar aspects of both of them. The one positive I have about them, is that they are very easy to start and easy to pull over. They're also pretty light weight - I actually came across a 79cc version on a bare bones side discharge once. The auto-choke setup reminds me of the ridiculous crap Kohler did at one point with the multiple linkages and vacuum thing.

      Yeah that makes sense, a 2019 mower here.. Now we have those PowerSmart engines.. haven't worked on one yet, but I've not heard good things about them .. These PowerMores actually don't seem half bad, but they're kinda clunky lol

    • @mattwickert736
      @mattwickert736 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Mike-anic I think they're the same, except PowerSmart is a branded name for the full machine. There's a few different versions of the Chinese engines out there. Some do seem to be better than others. If you get a horizontal shaft PowerSmart one, just take it to the scrap yard and save yourself lol I have a PowerMore here that blew a sump gasket and was throwing up oil out the front of it. I took it apart, but something got messed up when I re-assembled it bc it runs WOT no matter what now. I think I bumped the governor internally waaaaay out of position. Not feeling up to digging into it again, so it's gonna be sent to the scrap yard.

    • @Mike-anic
      @Mike-anic 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mattwickert736 Ahh, good ol' POwersmart. I saw those Horizontal shaft ones.. like WTF?! On a lawnmower you're going to use a transfer case and belt drive? Really? Seems like a lot of losses and added complication from a simple engine you could make vertical shaft and have it directly drive the blade. It makes no sense why they're reinventing the wheel. Sure, for those that hit things often while mowing maybe? Because it's belt driven, should help the engine survive a hit with a rock... but really? Just don't hit rocks... Silly (read stupid) design.. I agree with the junk pile. I haven't come across one yet, and want to just to take a looksee at them.. Make a video for people to know what to look out for LOL

      @@Mike-anic I had the same old Tecumseh motor on a Craftsman frame a few years ago. My wife had bought it for $25 at an animal rescue fundraiser yard sale, more out of a donation for animal rescue than as a need for a mower. The engine was not the original, that would have come with a Briggs, but it was a decent mower. It was late fall and we were expecting the first snow the next day, 6-12 inches. I had that Tecumseh Craftsman with its bag going 6 hours picking up leaves. I had switched it to 20-W50 earlier in the year because it used a lot of oil. I was 95% done, had bagged 23 paper yard bags 30 gallons each and suddenly the engine was spinning but the engine wasn’t running. Vented to block, just like yours.

      @Mike-anic 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, the truth is likely in there somewhere. It seems like the correct assumption. It's hard to know for sure, but low oil just seems to always be the culprit to these calamitous failures. I've got a plan for the deck, tho. Thinking of learning some welding, maybe repaint the deck, drop another engine on it, and send it. It will need a new blade, as the old one was scarier than my 3rd grade teacher!

      The deck needs a bit of patching here and there (I need to learn how to weld anyway, so why not).. I won't find on eBay, not at the shipping rates I'd be looking at. There are a lot of good 2-strokers here with bad bodies, i could likely do a swap.. However I think I could probably drop another Tecumseh engine on that deck... We used lawn boys for a time. Years ago, back in the 70s - 80s for my dads landscaping business. Some people love them & swear by them. I personally hated them. We always had issues with the two-stroke (A.K.A. smoke) engines. & the goofy front offset wheels. Would always dig in & gouge the lawns. We preferred using the commercial model Toro's.

    • @Mike-anic
      @Mike-anic 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yep, them little 2-strokers are a bit of a pain. That said, the newer Lawnboys (Toros) are decent... this one, however, not so much. I didn't know what I thought of the offset wheels, but hearing the scalping, I can understand how that could happen> I have a 2-stroke Lawnboy here too, it wasnt' starting.. but I think it's more because the SOB had no fricken' blade on it! hahahah.. I got a new blade for it, and just haven't gotten around to actually trying it. Mind you, the little nipple on the fuel tank had cracked, so I had to plastic weld that... after making sure the tank was well aired of fuel! OMG Could you imagine. hahah! "Mikeanic severely injured plastic welding a Fuel Tank".... What a dumbass!

    11:15 i think the blade hit a rock or a root and stopped it suddenly, breaking the rod and possibly bending the crank too. That's how these have always died on me. I think their Achilles heel is the blade adapter with dowel pins that won't allow the blade to spin at all if it hits something. If I don't hit something and destroy them they prettymuch run forever for me with basic maintenance lol

    • @Mike-anic
      @Mike-anic 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think it's a whole number of things. I think poor maintenance, along with poor mowing etiquette.. Possibly over-filled with oil after being badly underfilled, and well, time certainly took its toll and the connecting rod finally said.. "Well, I'm gonna make a break for it!"

  • @janetebitaxi7748
    @janetebitaxi7748 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

    What caused the breakage of the connecting rod?

    • @Mike-anic
      @Mike-anic 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Pretty sure lack of maintenance. The amount of forbidden glitter in the sump says that there was a lot of knockin' going on at one point. Pretty sure the connecting rod had a lot of wear on it... likely developed a knock (IE the journal clearance between the connecting rod and the crankshaft was out of spec, and there was too much space causing the connecting rod to actually impact the crankshaft... Likely added oil to try to help mitigate the knock, and probably over-filled it, causing it to possibly hydrolock (which would explain all the oil dumping out of the intake)... and blew out the connecting rod, sending it into the side of the block. That's my theory... But could also have been from poor maintenance, hitting a tree root, or rock... Causing an already worn connecting rod to jam, likely on a power stroke, and blew out the bottom of the rod, and since the engine was still happily spinning, sent the rod into the side of block, letting you inspect the internals. Thanks for watching :)

    43:16 Your not sure you have spark yet!

    • @Mike-anic
      @Mike-anic 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Was a bail issue. Mower had plenty of spark. I have long since fixed this and sent it. The bail cable mount on the handles had failed causing the cable to slide, and not engage the bail. But thanks for watching thru! Appreciate it

    Didn't try to start the mower before taking it apart?

    • @Mike-anic
      @Mike-anic 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No, I couldn't. It had no recoil starter rope when I got the the mower. th-cam.com/video/qGuTGfxB1w0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZbQ9-kOpeXSo4V-U This is the same Lawnmower, and if you watch, you'll see it'll be hard to test it without a recoil starter rope. So no, I didn't test it. But I knew I can fix whatever the problem is, save for a blown engine

  • @jakebrake5776
    @jakebrake5776 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I've always liked these engines. Between my parents and my Grandma we ended up having several craftsman mowers with them. Easiest starting mowers I've ever seen, I can usually do it on the 1st pull with good priming. I still use one of them where my riding mower can't get. Crazy to think they're over 20 years old now

      If you check out this one, th-cam.com/video/4QY7ai58_mk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0osgSrm-TDoPNc4D, It's a 35 year old mower! I was using it up until a month ago, when I finally decided to sell it. I kinda didn't want to, and sorta regret it, but that engine started so easy I actually accidentally started it in the video hahaha!

      Thank you so much! I actually use PineSol :) I get the Mandarin Orange one, cuz I really like the smell of oranges. Lately I've been experimenting with SuperClean degreaser, and another degreaser (highly diluted) and it has been working spectacular in the cleaner. But smells like death's armpit!
