Is the kit worth purchasing?
Absolutely! The fit and finish is really good and it builds into a really nice guitar.
Thanks man, I got a similar kit and had no idea what to do for wiring, so this really helped.
Cool beans, glad it was useful
I was looking for a flying V diy kit and found your channel, really amazing and decided to get this exact same kit to build, Thanks for the videos.
You should be very pleased with it. If you have any questions during the build, don't hesitate to reach out. Happy to help anyway I can.
Id love to try out one of these kits but I'm broke as hell evean with discounts 😂
Could use a discount bigtime
Go to one of my more recent videos and there will be an affiliate link in the description that will take you to the pango site and apply a discount to your order.
Hey bill! I’m building my custom v from pangolin right now. I can’t get the v shaped string thru tailpiece to line up with the Pickguard? Did you have to cut the Pickguard at all?
In the 3 V kits I have built, none of them align with each other. Even some of the Gibson Vs don't. You would have to trim the pickguard. Just be carful of your control cavity size so you don't trim the pickguard past that point.
@ ok good to know. That’s what I was gonna do is line up the v tailpiece and then trace the angle and take it off the pickgaurd. I just hope it doesn’t end up looking goofy. Was maybe gonna order a new pickgaurd off WD hope that that remedies it. But they’re like 50 dollars plus
Hi, i got a pango v kit and the neck pocket is a little loose.. what do you think is a good remedy to fix it?
I have this issue on kits before. What I do is glue a veneer to each side of the neck pocket, then evenly sand the side of the neck pocket until you get a good fit. Pretty easy and straight forward.
@billtaylor6509 awesome! Thanks for the help. First build and Going in kinda blind. Dig the channel
@@mattfitgerald8867 Many Thanks.
Can you recommend me any Les Paul custom guitar kit from Pango. I want to build black beauty with ebony fretboard. CTS 101, CTS 930 or any other...
PLP-136 and PLP-137 are kits that are routed for 3 humbuckers, but they have rosewood fretboards. They do have kits with ebony fretboards so you should be able to get one for those kits by special order.
Thank you so much for sharing this video series! Thanks to you, I could build my kit in about 6 hours, across 5 days. Some notes if you're interested: 1. I applied the initial black staining using acrylic black dye mixed with a lot of water - then I didn't need to sand it back, while the grains did come out significantly. 2. I used acrylic dyes mixed with water for the whole staining, including the neck and the back of the body. It dries very fast. 3. Used Elmer's wood glue, this is what they sell in my country. It dried overnight. 4. I managed with the supplied electronics and tuners. 5. I'm only frustrated with the flying v shape that partly blocks the access to the highest frets. 6. Overall, thanks to your comprehensive guidance, I could build a beautiful working electric guitar. It's my first time doing something like that, so it definitely isn't trivial. Thanks 🙂😀🎸
first off, Thank You! I will have to try the acrylic dyes. Thank you for the rundown on them. Definitely check out the other Flying V kits. The one I did in Candy Red has a different neck to body joint and there is full access on the neck.
@@billsguitargarage thanks!
@@billsguitargarage btw I guess I meant acrylic paints rather than dyes. I'm not sure what's the difference. I meant to those little bottles or tubes of liquid acrylic paints you can find in a typical art store.
looking good Bill she's gonna be a beauty!
Many thanks
The natural finish is going to look awesome.
Yes, it came out really well.
What are the frets like on these v kits? Are they needing work, are they stainless steel? Thanks
The fret work is pretty good. I have built 6 Pango kits and all of them have been playable without having to work on the frets.
I love flyig v guitars ❤. Good job buddy.
Thank you
Great video series.
Many thanks
thank you for doing these vids! ive just purchased a kit from pango and was looking to do just a natural oiled finish just like you have!
Cool beans. Hope the vids help
That really gave the wood a nice glow, Bill! Was that just a Minwax Hard Oil that you used, or a different product?
Can’t remember the brand at the moment. Gonna be switching over to Osmo soon.
@billsguitargarage I know Osmo is the go-to for Sweet T Guitars, so it should be solid!
I had them make a custom body for me based on their Steinberger GM2T kit. I wanted the same body but routed for a Floyd Rose. I also wanted them to paint it white and give it black binding. I told them I needed the tremolo post holes drilled 74mm apart. They sent me a bare wood body with white binding and no holes drilled. I paid $55 for that extra work and they only refunded me $35. Later on, they emailed me saying if I buy 3 more kits and do reviews, they'll send me a free kit. Not worth it.
Sorry to hear that. Definitely not the experience you want to have.
Nice work brother 👍you are the best.
Many Thanks.
@@billsguitargarage your'e welcome, blessings 🙏🏼
Man, you're better than me. The 1st thing I would've done is sand or shape that neck heel into the body for a nice transition, but your work always looks amazing, Bill!!!
I did that on the first one I built. With this one and the Red only, I left the heel alone. I'm so used to it from playing al LP all the time.
Nice 'n neat.
thank you.
This 50's Flying V is much better looking than the first one you did with the veneer. You did an amazing job with both builds but the shape on the first was just off. The angle of the V should be pointing at the 12 fret center of the guitar, otherwise its just too boxy. Anyway another great video Bill, hopefully pango will watch your video and correct the pickguard issue. Should be a simple fix.
Many thanks. Yes, the body to neck joint on this one is a bit more in line with the modern V. However, you will see a lot of them that are similar to the the first one. If you look at the white V James Hetfield plays, the neck to body joint is very similar.
So both parts came in the kit? The tail piece and the pick guard? Not good for a kit, some would not have your skill level or even the tooling to deal with that.
No, the tailpiece was fine. Almost anyone would be able to make the adjustments to the pickguard. All you would really need is a saw and a sanding block.
@ I've never built a kit but it seems like the parts supplied should fit together.
@@jonahguitarguy 99.9% of the time they do. This was just a small QC issue on the pickguard. Easily remedied.
Nice work Bill that is going to be a nice looking V!
many thanks.
Awesome series, thanks a lot for documenting it, I'm thinking of actually building a V myself and this will be extremely helpful! Great build!
Many Thanks.
Wicked boogie big boy!!!
I have installed valve guides in hundreds of air-cooled VW's back in the late sixties in exactly the same way. Heat the heads in a 350 F oven and keep the guides in the freezer until ready. Piece of cake.
Sometimes it just those simple little things that make it go easier!
I got a question, how long did it take for the guitar to ship and how long did it take for them to sponsor you? I’m an upcoming guitarist and i would like to know what it takes😊
Shipping times can vary. If the kit is in stock, it will normally ship pretty quick. Once shipped it usually arrives in 7 to 10 day. The one kit I bought from them was out of stock when I ordered in and it took about 6 weeks before it came back in stock. So I waited about 7 weeks from time of order until I received it. They saw the initial videos I did on that build and and asked if I'd be interested in doing some additional builds/reviews. This was about 1 year after I posted the videos on the first build I did.
You're amazing, this looks incredible and the tobacco burst type turned out amazing as well.
Many Thanks!
Brilliant that you considered neck dive, it's a deal breaker for me. Awesome series.
Thank you
Just found you, what a pro! The stain job you did is absolutely incredible, a mix of class and badass. Absolutely incredible. Weren't you a little sketched gluing in the neck without first putting on strings and checking the angle? Anyway, thank you for this. I've been looking at Pango guitars. We tune to B standard, and they're the only kit makers I've found where you can get a V or Explorer type guitar in 25.5" scale, which is (in my opinion) the minimum you need to deal with those lower tunings. Unfortunately most are in traditional, shorter Gibson scale. I'd even pay you to build one for me. Great work Bill! - DL
Thank you. I did check the neck break angle before glue in, but I use a straight edge and tape the bridge in place, then measure the gap between the bottom of the straight edge and the top of the bridge. As long as I have approximately 1 to 2 mm gap, I know I will be good once the neck is glued in.
I’ve decided I’m going to order one of these, and follow your videos for advice.
Cool beans. Hope it helps. This kit was super fun to build
Just received my Pango Kit, was going to upgrade the pickups, but after watching this video I think I’ll give them a try!
Absolutely. I was surprised on how they sounded.
I got this kit last year! My dad helped me with the clamping and blending of the neck heel (like a Les Paul Axcess) and I did the finishing (like an obsidian purple burst) and electronics.
Cool bean, how did it turn out?
@billsguitargarage It turn out great, just a few kinks on the electronics but I'll fix it when I'm on vacation this winter!
There was a question about these kits not being on the website. I just looked and you want to look at kits CST-830 and CST-930
Great video, Bill's Guitar Garage - Bill Taylor. Looking forward to your next upload! I smashed that thumbs up button on your content. Keep up the fantastic work. I'm curious, what other materials do you recommend for binding repairs, especially for different types of finishes?
Many Thanks. It would all depend on the type of binding, finish type etc....
I sincerely appreciate this, I am in the process of purchasing my V kit and I am stoked! Thank you.
Excellent. Which kit did you pick?
Wow I knew acetone was used to soften and bond the binding to wood. I did not realize you could totally melt it back to liquid (ish) form and have it solidify like that. Had I known that back when I did the Black and silver Les Paul reconstruction I probably would not have stripped all the binding off of that one.
It is an easy type of repair, but it doesn't work for some types, such as celluloid binding and some types like tortoise shell, it just wouldn't look right
great repair idea
Many Thanks.
Just in awe of your work, thanks for sharing.
Thank you . For some super informative stuff on finishing Check out BigD Guitars here on TH-cam. He does some amazing stuff.
Since it's gonna be sealed, I'd paint that spot on the binding.
Good suggestion. Definitely look at that as an option
Great easy to follow video thank you 🙏🏼
Many Thanks.
Looks like a great fit so far. I have never built a guitar, but just curious why they would glue the neck in solid compared to something like a Stratocaster with a bolt in neck. So if you have a broken or badly warped neck down the road, it could be swapped out.
Some people just prefer a set neck (Glued in) or neck through design. Necks warping really is that common of an issue.
Looking good. Makes me want an LP even more than I already do.
It is a nice kit and I'm a big fan of LP style guitars as well.
I got my Pango LP. Paid extra for an 'ebony' fretboard. The pictures also showed a white nut. Upon opening, it has a BLACK nut and the 'ebony' is a dark brown. They said ebony comes in different shades. Which is true, but you could dye a rosewood fretboard and end up with the same look for less. I asked why the nut was black and they stopped replying. Lol!
It is true ebony can be a brownish color. easiest way to tell is to look at the wood grain. Ebony has a very tight grain so you really shouldn't see any open grain on an ebony board.
Yeah they come at you with an attitude when you call them out on mistakes they made.
@@JoeR203 sorry to hear that
Where can I get your sanding system? Thanks.
Amazon carries it. You can also find it at StewMac.
Hey man! Just found your channel. Love it man! I’m a session bassist in Nashville. I’ll tell all my pals about the channel
Many thanks!
Nice job Bill, love the channel. You should do some sort of fire and ice inspired finish on these.
Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines.
Loving how well these kits seem to be made. My only worry about doing one is the beautiful blond woods. Id have to use gloves every time I touched them to avoid sweat and oil soaking in. I would assume they come already in sealer though? On a side note might wanna edit the title lest ye offend your sponsor and we dont get to see more cool builds in the future.
No sealer. Just bare wood. Edit title? Why… not seeing anything wrong there.
@@billsguitargarage paMgo instead of Pango
@@borgonianevolution Good catch.... I am horrible about spotting spelling mistakes. My dyslexia really kicks in sometimes!
Looks pretty solid so far! I'm not a block or trapezoid inlay fan, but they are classic for some. Have you decided on your color or finish for each yet?
No decision on colour yet.
Do they provide the kit with pearloid pickguards?
I haven't seen it on the standard kits, but that is something you could ask as a custom add on. Just not sure if they offer it.
