I’m thrilled to share that my Cooltropics hybrids-P. incarnata (May Pop hybrid) and P. Snowstar-purchased from Thompson & Morgan in July 2024 fruited for me. These hardy passion fruit varieties are said to withstand temperatures as low as -15°C and are excellent cross-pollinators, allowing for edible fruit production. To support their growth, I created fun Fibreclay “Owl” planters with obelisk ...
Picking home grown Chilean Guava (Ugni Molinae) in England to make 'Chilean guava raisins'

On this chilly January day (4/1/2025), I harvested my Chilean guava (Ugni Molinae) just before the snow arrives tonight! These aromatic, sweet, and tasty fruits are a true delight. From my 2021 harvest, I made Murtado-a delicious Chilean liqueur. Now, with this year's harvest I have decided to use the guavas to make "Chilean guava raisins" which will involve drying the berries to make raisin-li...
Growing Physalis in the UK: Chinese Lanterns & Inca Gold Berry

I'm growing two Physalis varieties in my UK garden. Chinese Lanterns (Physalis alkekengi) thrive in containers to control their spread, with bright orange, edible fruit when ripe. My Inca Gold Berry (Physalis peruviana), planted in 2023, struggled to ripen this year due to cool weather and frost. I'm trying to ripen the fruits indoors using bananas. How I’m Ripening Tamarillos Indoors This Winter! Hi everyone! It’s December 23, 2024, and this year’s cooler weather has slowed down the ripening of my tamarillo fruit. Usually, these vibrant fruits would be ready to pick by now, but they’re still not quite there. I’ve learned that if you harvest tamarillos when they’re too immature-still very green and small-they might not ripen properly or de...

Growing Sugar Baby Watermelons in a Cool UK Summer: Harvest & Taste Test
มุมมอง 2272 หลายเดือนก่อน
I’ve been growing Sugar Baby watermelons in my greenhouse here in the UK. This year’s cooler weather has made them grow more slowly than usual, and they’ve turned out smaller than expected. As the vines started to dry up, I decided it was time to harvest. When I cut them open, the melons weren’t as ripe as I had hoped-the flesh wasn’t the deep crimson I was aiming for. Still, they had that clas...
Farewell Goji Berry: Replacing with Pineapple Guava (Feijoa sellowiana) standard in My UK Garden.

In this video, I share the ups and downs of growing a Goji berry plant in my UK Zone 9 garden. I purchased the plant from Morrison's garden center back in March 2021, but after years of trying, I've only managed to harvest a small handful of berries. Over time, my Goji berry plant has been repeatedly affected by powdery mildew, a fungus that prevents the leaves from photosynthesizing, causing t...

Whoa they really got a frost on them
Great harvest. Gonna be some tasty raisins!
Your citrus trees are looking really healthy, Mike! It's great to see so many fruits on your Kiwi vine, too! I need to plant my Jenny Kiwi vine in the ground somewhere this year. I've had it in a pot for almost exactly two years, and it's in desperate need of repotting.
Everything looks great Mike. Have those Jenny kiwi gone a bit soggy from freeze damage ?
Some of them are soft but not soggy Brett. The hairs on the Jenny kiwi is like and insulating blanket and provides a good level of protection against cold and environmental stress.
great use of a southern exposure and the enclosures youve built for the more tender stuff. that fuzzy kiwi is hardy to my zone, might have to check it out!
I highly recommend this fuzzy Jenny Kiwi 'raregrows', it is self fertile and planted in the right location, it needs minimal maintenance.

Fallgold seems to have a more orange tint in colouration than the Allgold , this has helped in an Identification issue
I hope none of your citrus trees have taken any damage, Mike 🤞. It does look pretty with the frost on though.
They have taken damage Peter, as I expected. The roots are well protected so they will not die. But no worries, it is work in progress. I have the same varieties under cover in my Grow tent and in the orangery.
Jesus those plants 🪴 look super frozen my goodness will they survive 😳 😢! Try amd cover them with some plastic to protect them.
Many of the citrus trees I have highlighted were exposed to the freezing conditions of winter 2022-2023, when temperatures in my garden dropped to -8°C, causing dieback in some trees. I believe a hardening process is at work, where the surviving parts of the tree gradually adapt and become more resilient to cold with each successive winter-a phenomenon known as acclimatization. However, this is a high-risk strategy, as most citrus species have limited cold tolerance, generally around -5°C to -7°C. To mitigate this, fleece coverings should be used in the early years whenever temperatures fall below -6°C.
@myexoticfoodplants6727 good strategy 👏🏿 👌🏿 and I wish you only the best.
@@topofthehillgarden6161 Thank you
I would like to grow them as well🤔
Can be easy as growing tomatoes if you can get plug plants.
The fruits and leaves look so pretty covered in frost, hopefully you won't get too much long term damage 🤞
I hope they will Brett. They were damaged in the winter of 2022-2023 and slowly bounced back. I suspect this will be the process until they reach the size of some hardy citrus to be found growing in some London gardens.

It looks like they're dying down for the cold. Those you picked are not even fully developed or ripe yet. The fully developed will have all white seeds filled inside the fruit. Ripe ones will be yellow filled fluid sac surrounding the black seeds and highly fragrant. It makes sense when my mom complained that my sister picked a whole bag of empty ones for her. My mom was so mad.😂I was like I don't know, maybe she doesn't know how to pick them. When I picked them, I would smell for their fragrance before picking them or wait till they drop off. The ripe ones are more heavy and yellow green tone skin. If you water them regularly, they'll rewards you with lots of ripe fruits.
Thanks for that tip kkn, regular water was an issue last year. Hope the vines will take off quicker this year.
Beautiful grape Vines
Thank you
Fever grass and lemon grass is two different thing, lemon grass is much taller.. hazel
Passiflora Incarnata is native to temperate regions of north america. It grows wild in my back yard, USDA zone 7 on the east coast. Winters are colder here than most of England. The plants usually turn yellow and die in the fall going deciduous. They explode back in the spring. Ive never seen fruits in the ones that grow in my yard. Be careful with them. In the US they are EXTREMELY aggressive growers. They are known to really take ovwr and can spread 30+ feet through underground rhizomes showing up where you wouldnt expect. You may lack the intense heat and humidity of our summers so mayne theres less risk of them taking over, just be warned they might take over!
Thanks for the info LC. One of my reason for growing my Passiflora incarnata in a container is to control invasion via the roots.
@myexoticfoodplants6727 Good luck. I've never tried one myself still, but the flowers are gorgeous. The bumblebees love them and bury themselves in the pollen.
@LoganShelton-rh3lp and @lyonheart84. Here is a reply to my post in a ‘Cold Hardy Passiflora group’ from Raphael Maier. “Ok so I am the breeder who selected the Passiflora Cooltropics Snowstar. So let me explain a few points: (1).Both Snowstar and EiaPopeia are pure P. incarnata and no hybrids. They are only selections out of seedlings. (2).Then your fruit were not hallow, they were simply not ripe. In the UK climate P. incarnata fruits need to form at the latest in July, every fruit which formed later will not ripen. They need under good conditions, 3 months to ripen. The seeds form quite late and the yellow arils (which you eat) form at the end. So, your fruits were simply far from ripe. By the way they will fall off when ripe. So, what I would advise you to do is either grow them in a greenhouse or in a really sunny and hot spot. In general, Passiflora incarnata is not well suited for the UK. The problem is not the winter cold but the lack of summer heat.
Not surprised they were hollow Mike, thats a common problem with passiflora in this country. If they had set properly I'd say they would have ripened and fallen in October / November 😁
I think the short growing time from July to October when the weather started to get really cold may be the main factor Brett. Passionflowers need a long growing season with warm temperatures to produce high-quality fruit. In the UK, the growing season may be shorter or cooler than ideal, impacting the fruit's interior development.
Edulis x. Incarnata? Whats the expected cold tolerance?
As far as I know Edulis and incarnata pollen is not compatible Logan so they unlikely to be hybrids from those two, more likely to be hybrids created from crossing with other hardier varieties
From what I have read, the Cooltropics (hybrid P. incarnata) is the combination of P. incarnata (which can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C) X (typically tropical Passiflora edulis (the purple passionfruit) or Passiflora quadrangularis (the giant granadilla), which contribute tropical traits like larger flowers, showy colours, and distinctive flavours in the fruit. P. Snowstar is the combination of P. incarnata X P. caerulea which can (withstand temperatures as low as -15°C) and the potential to bear edible fruits. The hybrid P. incarnata and the P. Snowstar are not self-fertile, but they are good cross pollinators for each other.

unc they have certain avacodo that does better in cooler weather
Hay Kysta!!!
Incredible you have fruit so late, mine were finished in September / October 😱
It might be a location or variety difference Brett. The 2021 harvest was similar, in December 2021.
@ certainly very unusual to see them so late but ideal I would say
That's a really impressive crop of Chilean guava you have there. I've only ever tasted a single Chilean guava berry, it was on a plant at the nursery in France and was delicious. Thats a really great idea to make a liqueur, I'm sure it'll taste really good too 👍🏽
It a great plant Dominic with great smelling flowers and fruits. The fruit are delicious and this time round I am going to use them to make "Chilean guava raisins" I have also ordered a variegated variety called Flambeau, to replace a plant I lost in 2023, due to the heat wave and following cold spell in December 2022.

I love cape gooseberries Mike, just cant find any space to grow any 😢
Amazing job you’ve done there Mike 🤩🌱🙌🏾
What a fabulous sight that makes in your garden Mike 👍
Thanks Brett. Yes the grow tents with the light looks fabulous; like a Jewel at night, and the fruits on some of the citrus trees looks like baubles on a Christmas tree.
It's great to see your setup is working well again, Mike 👍
Thank you Peter. I am experimenting with various growing conditions with some of my Citrus plants this year. Some are growing in unheated grow tents, whilst some of my older established citrus are growing without cover. However, I have frost cloths ready to throw over if temperatures approach -6C.

Thanks Louise. Joe has a similar tree and his flowered and fruited this year, so I am hopeful.
I will try that banana trick! I have so many cape gooseberries outside that won’t ripen in time and It’ll be below zero in a few days
The use of ripe banana to help ripen your Cape gooseberries works LadyMoringa. Please ensure that you use a brown paper bag rather than a plastic bag where condensation could lead to fungal attack.

Hi AkebiaReviewer Have you tried growing the Chocolate vine?
@@myexoticfoodplants6727 Yes I am growing many plants but they never fruit. I don't have two varieties where I live.
@@AkebiaReviewer Sorry to hear that your plants have not fruited for you. My experience is that a chocolate vine of a different variety is definitely needed for cross pollination and hence fruiting.
