Carp on an Ultralight Fly Rod
On a short trip to Hatchlands, the first time that I went to try out a one weight fly rod, I was intending to ease myself in gently with roach, rudd and maybe a perch or two. The fish had other ideas!

The Drill Rig. Cheap as Chips but a Really Efficient Tackle.

The drill rig uses a drill or power screwdriver and a simple, bimini twist tyer to make, both quickly and easily, some really effective, really cheap little booms. These can be tied in minutes and used to construct the drill rig, a rough ground, cheap as chips paternoster tackle that barely tangles - and only then if you are a little unlucky - and catches well into the bargain. You could. You could also use a stop knot made out of the inner core of an old 7 strand telephone cable. I don't think that they would grip as well but they would do the job. Mind you, I wouldn't fancy a smoothhound on the top trace. Pretty sure that a crimp would prevent slippage better than the alternatives but probably worth giving it a go.

    I have used 4 and 5 metre whips in the sea and have also taken an 8 lbs carp on a 4 metre whip adapted this way. I removed the original eye, folded a 15 cms piece of stainless steel, grade 304 wire - 1.25 mm from eBay - in half and whipped it on, leaving a robust 'eye' protruding about 7 or 8 mm from the end, sealing the whipping with either UV resin or two coats of rod varnish. Sometimes, I fold the metal down slightly before I whip it on but this doesn't seem necessary. It just looks a little better. The finished job is much stronger than the original eye and perfect for the short elastic links that I use in the sea. Nowadays, I connect the elastic with a fast link at one end - much more durable than a snap link - and a plastic connector at the other. It works well. I wish you all the best with your experiments. Have fun!

    Problem I noticed when checking your depth, you had the float closer every time you put in to check, if the bottom sloped as it seemed too, you would be way off the bottom if you fished at pole length where you first checked the depth. Like you made a new friend with the Seagull.

    • @martyngreen7565
      @martyngreen7565 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Del. Thank you for your thoughts. I was fishing a rising tide. The variance between the low tide and the high tide can be dramatic. At the mark where I filmed, the difference can be three to four metres. You might start at a depth of two metres - less on a Spring tide - but gradually, over the session, it can rise until nearly the length of the pole which, in this instance, was six metres. The bottom does slope a bit but is also complicated by being uneven, which is why a plummet is a good idea to have. Even a shift of three or four metres to the side can change the depth considerably.

  • @DelDredd
    @DelDredd 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What size elastic is that, looks like some serious strength stuff, nothing like the stuff I have used in the past for normal Pole fishing even for small crucian carp but that went trough the pole tip sections not outside.

    • @martyngreen7565
      @martyngreen7565 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Normally I use 15 - 17 grade solid elastic, but on some marks, the fish are a bit bigger so I step up a grade and use hollow elastic, which is a lot thicker. At one mark, where I have caught bass and wrasse to 4.5 lbs, I have even gone to 20 - 24 grade hollow elastic. It can be useful when the rocks and seaweed are particularly snaggy and you get caught a lot and need to retrieve your tackle without putting too much strain on the pole. Sadly, I can't get down that mark any more - osteoarthritis seems to have got a motor on since the radiotherapy - but there are still a lot of other places to enjoy. I have had to curtail the market too, unfortunately. This year, I had so many trips booked by people for fishing that I didn't have time to make the garden ornaments. Shame, but there ye be! Anyone interested in buying a lot of garden ornament moulds? Going cheap...

      The underwater shots give a feel of the area straight in front of where I was fishing. The surrounding area is much as you describe. The best place is where there is a large rock with a miniature, well, almost a cave underneath it. The wrasse get in there and trailing your bait just in front of it often brings out the larger fish. I lose a few drop shot leads on occasion but not very often really.

    • @DelDredd
      @DelDredd 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@martyngreen7565 The bit I fish currently with LRF is Big Rocks and Boulders that have been placed to break up the Waves along the side of a large Stone Jetty, the side of the Jetty is big concrete steps apart from the bottom 8 feet or so which drops to the bottom, the tide barely drops below this ledge apart from the shore end. The boulders and rocks come right up to this so you are basically dropping into some clear area's between the boulders vertically really, a few spots you can flick out maybe 10 feet if the area is a bit clearer. Only fish over low and start of flood with dropshot as it pushes you back up the large steps and unable to drop vertical, switch to small plastics for the small Pollack and Bass then. Catch plenty of smaller Wrasse of various types, Blennies and Gobies of all sorts, give a fight on the 1-10g rod, the small Pollack even better fight.

I want to test out the rigs a few more times before I do a video where I show them in full detail but for now they have worked extremely well. Ben's smoothhound and all but one of the dogfish came up on them without a single tangle - and Ben's smoothhound certainly put this latest version of the paternoster rig through its paces. They have also handled doubled hook-ups of small conger and dogfish without any problems. An interesting thing, at least for me, is the way that they have performed when I have been comparing them to other two hook tackles. It's only been about seven or eight trips but, even when heavily outnumbered by other anglers with multiple two-hook tackles, every double hit on every trip has come up on the T-boom. I am quite optimistic but, at the same time, a bit cautious. I like to check things out thoroughly first.

    Very interesting video! I am a keen tenkara fly fisherman and have recently bought a 6 metre Keiryu rod which is based on the same principle of tenkara (fixed line, no reel) but is a more substantial rod that will handle bigger fish. I was tempted to try this method having watched videos of Spanish anglers using long Keiryu rods to catch decent sized mullet from the rocky Atlantic coast shore using nymphs imitating shrimps as baits: the method is highly effective and could easily used for bait fishing on river and in the sea. I have so far only used it on my local river and it is highly effective for chub and the method allows drag free drifting of either bait or fly and the length of the rod allows access to channels in the river defined by surrounding weed beds that makes them almost impossible to fish from the bank (I usually wade).Just a few thoughts.

      Some very interesting thoughts too. I tried one of my marks with live prawns and encountered some much larger wrasse that the pole struggled with. I am going to look again with a carp 6m battle margin pole but the keiryu rod could also be very good fun. I shall have to do some research.

      Thank you. It is really good fun. Can be a little interesting when you catch a double figure carp but you have to react accordingly. I have had over 400 carp on it now, 40 of them doubles, and you do need to make sure that the drag on the reel is properly set if they decide to run. On a couple of occasions they have reached weed but I have always managed to get them out by pointing the rod straight towards them and gently moving backwards while clamping the line against the rod. Once they are out, you can play them normally. It hardly ever happens in the waters that I fish so the thing to remember is never to put too much strain on the rod. It will handle a lot but it is finesse fishing, not brute force. You just have to react quickly and sensibly, when the fight is really enjoyable. You also need to pick your fishery mind. Not a tactic for specimen waters with really big carp but superb on match lakes where ten pounders are generally the biggest fish that you will encounter.

    Can I please ask where did you get your #1 weight fly rod from?

    • @martyngreen7565

      Hello Peter. I bought the whole outfit from a company called Maxcatch Fishing, over the internet, at www.maxcatchfishing.com/. It wasn't hugely expensive but it has never let me down. I have had over four hundred carp on it, including 40 just over ten pounds, best weight 10 lbs 12ozs 8 drms. I would recommend that you try out on a pool where the carp were smaller, while you get a feel for the gear, and then gradually get more ambitious. Personally, I think it is great fun and I wish you all the best with it.

      Usually from the visitor's pontoon on the marina or sometimes, if the ferry people don't object, from the pontoon where the ferry collects their passengers.

      Hello Bob. African Queen comes fully equipped with all lifejackets, life raft and all necessary safety equipment. While we weren't wearing lifejackets, with a sea that was all but flat calm, they were all neatly laid out in the cabin where they could be handed out and donned within seconds.

    Great video. Just bought a roach whip to do this exact thing in brixham in a few weeks. Just wondering - have you tried other baits than worm here with any success?

    • @martyngreen7565
      @martyngreen7565 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there. Yes, I have, changing the bait and venue to match the target species, which will vary according to the time of year and conditions on the day. I have used mackerel strips to catch mackerel, scad and garfish when they are close in, similarly whiting and pouting in the Winter, but I have also used live prawns to target bass and bigger wrasse on the Breakwater. Ragworms seem to work better than lugworms here though, with a quarter pound of ragworms usually enough to last you through one tide. I have also scooped shrimps from the sandy beaches, which can do well for wrasse of all sizes, but I have also had golden grey mullet on ragworms. I think the day will come when I catch some bream on the pole but it hasn't happened yet. I think it will though, when I find the right mark.

    Been enjoying your videos over the last couple of days. It's been 20 years almost to the day that I last fished Hatchlands. There were golden trout in silver lake back then. I also seem to remember we (probably incorrectly even then) came in via the entrance on the left. Coming in from the top entrance where is the parking for the trout lake? Can you simply pull up in the southeastern corner of the lake?

    • @martyngreen7565
      @martyngreen7565 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Clive I am glad that you have been enjoying the videos. To park, just come down from the main Totnes road, where the sign is, and then drive around silver lake and over the bridge to the trout lake. It can be a bit muddy but there are spots to park by the trout lake, next to the new building that is being built.

    Some nice equipment producing some lovely casting.The cascade rig looks like it could be worth a try. I am looking to find a book or diagrams of this rig. Is it in any of your books Martyn ? Great video too.

    • @martyngreen7565
      @martyngreen7565 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Mark. I only designed the cascade rig a few weeks ago so it has not appeared in any of my books just yet. (As you know, I write under my middle name - Lindsey Green.) I have got a video to finish on the bimini twist, using a tool so that you can tie it very quickly to pretty much any length of loop that you want, and then I am going to do a video focusing on the cascade pulley. I have tried it out a few more times since I made the video - still without any tangles - and on the last trip I had a double shot of bass, several singles and then a cod and a bass on the same cast. As I said in the video, I am cautiously optimistic - you have to be a bit careful with any new rig - but so far it is doing very well indeed. It has never unclipped during a cast and has released perfectly every time.

    nothing wrong with fly rodding for coarse fish i do it casting real or artificial fly in the usa its common we just bogged down with tradition ...personally i dont mind and im total fly for trout any thing else ill try any thing !!

    • @martyngreen7565
      @martyngreen7565 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to hear Tracy. On this side of the pond it's a very niche activity but it is growing in popularity. A lot of people fly fish for carp but not many have diversified into other coarse species. Add in the fact that 1 and 2 weight rods are not readily available in the UK - I had to have mine sent over from America - and it makes this style of ultralight fly fishing a bit more difficult. Hopefully, as more and more people try it, it will become more common.
