Link pixel art but 8 years later (animation)
มุมมอง 2.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
8 years ago, I was just starting out in pixel art. Crazy it's been that long. I didn't know any animation principles, and I think I was still animating in Photoshop (yuck). Since then, I've learned a lot, I've done hundreds of more animations, and I've studied the art of smooth movements. Possibly the title of a future book. And so here's my attempt at the same animation 8 years later, with all...

Doctor swings stick and heals stuff (Pixel Art Animation Process)
มุมมอง 1.5K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hey hey, today's animation is Dr. K. I've been intermittently keeping up with his stuff for the last few years. I think he's got some good stuff! Yea yeah, some of his stuff is a bit "huh" and makes you want to raise your eyebrow occasionally. And then there's the general scepticism you'd have towards any "self-help" guy that everyone's treating like a guru/God. (I.e. is this a cult). But OVERA...
I drew some pixel art portraits
มุมมอง 7987 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hey, it's been a while. Perfectionism kicked my ass again, and that's my bad. How am I going to beat it this time? Lowering standards. On the one hand, it means less effort on these (temporarily), Less speaking, less editing, less refining. On the other hand, it means more consistency. Less of these random 6-month breaks. Then, as momentum builds, we'll be back to the more in-depth stuff. Will ...
Staggering | Animation Principles
มุมมอง 4.5K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Quick little ramble about staggering. It's something I tend to think about and incorporate when working on animations. I'm not sure if staggering is exactly the right term for ALL of what I've shown here, but let's ah let's forget about it, the word's not important. Also, Merry Christmas everyone. Twitter: Nootall_
Easing | Animation Principles
มุมมอง 4.1Kปีที่แล้ว
A lot of poor animation is a consequence of non-existent easing. Everything's stiff and linear. It's in learning to implement some easing that we can make our stuff look a bit more lively. Because nothing with any soul moves without it. We speed up, slow down. Accellarate, deaccelarate. Yadadada. The only thing that moves in a calculated and linear way is robots, which, unless you're animating ...
How I'd Change Your Idle Animation | Pixel Art
มุมมอง 7Kปีที่แล้ว
Idle idle idles. Every animator at one point or another is going to do an idle animation. Some will go for the traditional bop up and down, which is fine. However, there are some situations where I think we can make things more interesting. A little more lively. A bit of bounce, a bit of character that distinguishes them from everyone else. In this case, we're looking at a boxing animation sent...

Last week I asked you guys to send in some of your sprites, and you did, so thank you for that. Here's me animating a Yasuo Sprite (From League of Legends) sent in by Minh: MTranbinh As I mentioned in the video, Yasuo was one of the first things I animated in pixel art about 6 years ago, and so I thought it would be interesting to see what I could do now in comparison. How I Deal With Colors (Pixel Art)
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
Nootall_ If you don't have a natural instinct for colours, then it's really not fun. I suck at colours, a lot of people I see suck at colours. But I think I've reached a point where my colours aren't SO bad that they ruin everything. They're mediocre. Good enough. Sufficient. And so here's what I've learned over the years, here's how I approach the terrifying world of colors.
I Try to Explain Sub Pixels in Animation
มุมมอง 183Kปีที่แล้ว
Probably one of the more advanced concepts in the world of pixel art, but I think it's a good one to be aware of even if you're just starting out. Anyway, here's my charlatan explanation of the concept based on where I've used it over the years. Twitter: Nootall_ Ramblings: nicknuttall.com/

This is amazing. Beautiful tips. Beautiful music. Beautiful art. And beautifully fast paced😩
wow, aspiring animators can get a lot if tips in this one video. Underrated channel.
ty
i compiled it myself so it was absolutely free for me.. lol
Thank yoooou, creating custom brushes from layers was exactly the functionality I was looking for and your video was the first one I checked 😂 Although I was hoping for something more like an instance that you populate at an origin point on each frame and if you make changes to the reference those changes are updated to each frame its used. Do you know of any features like that?
Great video, thank you for sharing!
you are very talented my friend
The more detailed versions look too cluttered as well. Too much going on.
Well put!
so good !!!
MUCHAS GRACIAS
Cant export my file as gif, it says that “file format does not support: layers” what should i do?😢
LibreSprite is an OpenSource Alternative. Same UI, but I didn't test it. I've just downloaded, it looks promising. I'll try it..
When you plan on doing the next viewer animations? No pressure, I just happened to send mine in at a bad time for you. Also, it's r for replace

@@ruinknightsir Hey man, just sent you an email
hahaha! This was funnily very entertaining to me. Keep up the good work :)
Haha thanks - I'm glad to hear it 😄
I think this is a good idea, though I feel like you might end up making a lot of stuff you won't end up using. Personally, I would instead look through the assets I already have and see if I can modify any of them into the the I want. I'd rather figure out what I need as I progress making my game. I can then add that new thing to my toolbox. Think my approach saves more time, though I can see the benefit of making varients in the moment
Yeah that would be a more sensible approach, I suppose it depends on how you best work! For me, momentum is a big thing. If Im rolling and in the swing of things, it's easier to just produce a big pile of things at once and then leave out the bits I don't want to use. Otherwise, I'm doing a lot of back and forth, stopping and starting, that id ideally avoid
I always thought I was the only one doing this sprite recycling. One of my favs was a spiky sentinal enemy i created by combining some some crystal spike tileset with a metal pipe lol A great side effect to this is that your assets look very consistent in game since they are basically all derivatives of each others base forms and colors. great video
Yes! Consistency. Absolutely. The more new stuff you produce from scratch, the greater chance you'll ruin the feeling of continuity.
This is called 'overlapping action' not staggering. Staggering is the technique used to make something shake or vibrrate very rapidly.
Just got Aseprite 4 days ago and been making pixel art daily since. Did my first animation ever on it with no problem. There's a very small learning curve to the program and a couple guides sorted that out in under an hour. Could not recommend more for pixel artists.
Hey that's awesome, thanks for sharing 👍 glad to hear it's been relatively easy so far. Do you have history with other similar kinds of software? I found that helped a lot for me when starting out.
@@nootall I used an old Gimp version prior to this, but found the program to require more effort for the same results in Pixel Art with less relevant tools and a cluttered UI. Only did 1-3 pics a YEAR on Gimp, across 12 years. Gave up on trying animation. Aseprite separating frames from layers helps infinitely! And link cells are the cherry on top. Sooo much easier than learning animation off just frames. It took me 17 hours to make a 20s animation, but I'm proud of the result and I'm learning how to be more efficient as I go!
@@Kmn483 Absolutely, the timeline is a real blessing lol. And a 20s animation in pixel art is some real commitment! I can't say i've done anything close to that. A lot of frames 😶🌫
glad found this channel 😊😊😊. so helpfull for newbie like me 😅
Hey glad to hear it :)
A fun analogy would be, dancing like a robot, your trying to do regular movements, but your doing small little movements at a time of small details to get to that overall movement,
What is the name of the program you drawing in?
the music bg make me cant breath normally
Thia video is so goated. I nearly fell out of my reaction to simple reflection. This video alone made me create an Aseprite tips Playlist. 10 out 10 would definitely recommend.

Great work! That inflation tip is fantastic. Not something I think I would have thought of on my own

So. I recorded the audio here without the time-lapse in front of me, and I won't be doing that again. There's a lot of unfocused waffling/rambling because of the fact, which is probably annoying - my bad. Next time I'll have the video in front of me so that the commentary is more relevant to what's happening on screen.
I have a little question, do you know how to rotate sprites like ludwig in super mario world?
Selection tool Highlight section. Hover outside corner of selection. Click then rotate. Sorry it's a bit tricky to explain in text. But hope that helps
