Generator Shed completed project
มุมมอง 116K11 ปีที่แล้ว
The finishing touches of my generator project. I built a platform to raise the generator off the ground due to occasional flooding issues. The generator is 45' from the house and I made a 65' cord from 10/4 flexible wire. The shelf holds gas cans and a ladder that will be locked with a steel cable. I plan to install a fire extinguisher just in case.
Generator Shed Modifications

I modified a Suncast Horizontal Shed to house my Champion portable generator. Most of the parts are off-the-shelf from home improvement stores. The unit will be situated about 25' from my house and will be connected when necessary by a 10/3 flexible cord. The cord will connect to my generator on one end, the other end will connect to an outlet that will lead to a 30 amp breaker in my electric p...

Generator Shed Modifications
มุมมอง 14K11 ปีที่แล้ว
I took a Suncast Horizontal Shed and customized it to house my generator. I added air intake vents, gable mounted exhaust fan, shutter and exhaust vent. All of the materials were off the shelf items from home improvement stores. I used a sheet of HardieBacker in the rear of the shed for heat where my exhaust vent is located. Let me know if you have any questions or would like part numbers and I...

Homemade Chicken Coop
มุมมอง 3.7K12 ปีที่แล้ว
I made this Chicken Coop recently to house our three chickens. We plan to add 6 more chicks in the spring. All materials were purchased at Lowes and I also recycled some materials laying around the shop. The overall dimentions are 6' W x 3'D x 6' high. The window was recycled. The roof has dimentional shingles and is mounted on two large hinges, so that I can prop it up in the summer. There are...
Hey Jim, I’m getting ready to start a build for my Champion generator. Just wanted to see how your shed held up and if there was anything you changed over the years? Thanks
Flooding is for fish ducks and creepy crawlers... move.
Hate 2 say it bud but a lock cutter and 10 seconds that Generator is gone!!! And you're right next to a main street, Easy Access!!! I would fence in for privacy and protection!!! No need for all that work to end up vandalized!!! Word 2 the wise, they'll never make anything that can't be stolen!!! Ask the Federal Government!!!
Best job I've seen yet!
Very nice but did you make an outlet for exhaust and grounding ?
Thanks for your comment. I did cut out an outlet for the exhaust. I did not add a ground.
@@jdmac62 Thanks, just got a small Duromax 5500 entry level unit.
I know this is old but I'm hoping you had a chance to run this for a long time and tell me if it worked well or if there were problems I just bought a suncast shed and I'm looking for older videos to hear from people that actually used these for time.... if you see this any help would be greatly appreciated
I have used the generator and shed for over six years now and it still works great. Although it is manual start, it runs for hours and powers out entire house. I don't think there is anything I would do differently. Good luck with your project.
@@jdmac62 hey.... great! Thanks for replying on such a old video. Glad to see this has held up. REALLY APPRECIATE YOU!
I would like to know why is your generator so far from the house? Why not put the generator up close to the house next to the 240V generator plug? If you keep it in the shed, the noise will be kept to a minimum while running.
Good question. 6' is the minimum safe distance that the generator must be from the house. I have flooding issues from time to time and wanted to store it on an elevated platform facing the woods on our side yard. I have a cord that reaches the house. It works well for my situation. Other people may want it closer to their house.
Great video!! Simple and effective, nice design for the shed.
Thank you Rocky It works well
Cool
Great shed! I do have a question and I'm not seeing videos of people talking about it. If it rains, do you have issues with water getting inside your shed (water coming through the intake vent)?
Thank you Jared. I have had no issues with rain getting into the shed.
I'm sure you know running it in the garage is a no 👎
Was just for demonstration purposes for the video. It is mounted outside 30' from the house.
NICE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE EXACTLY HOW YOU DID YOU'RE EXHAUST> IF THATS POSSIBLE. THANKS.
I described it below in the comments. Each generator is different and you will need to "design-build" for your unit.
A little late to the party but how does your exhaust work for you with the magnets because I think that's a good idea not to alter the machine in any kind of way
Works fine, no issues at all with the exhaust
A bunch of good ideas. Thanks!
Have you thought about , putting metal window screen on the vents. would keep out bugs and wind blown debris.
Good idea, thank you Michael.
I know it was a long time ago but can you measure your smaller ones I like that size for the front air movement is huge thank you sir I love the build
Hello just starting mine this looks perfect for my needs your video is truly amazing thank you for what you did awesome job
Looks awesome - excellent post, With a setup like this you are officially a hard core prepper. I really enjoy these kind of videos as they give me ideas for my own needs.
This was detailed
Congratulations...one small fuel leak, and you have a bomb.
Too much tv.👆
Hi Jim, great work! What is the maximum interior box temperature you feel comfortable with while operating the generator? Are you concerned about overheating? What are the exterior temperatures that you’ve run the unit? Thanks
Gerard, I have the fan thermostat set at 80 degrees, which I feel is a comfortable temp. I have run it when it was 90 degrees out and it maintained the 80 degree set point no problem. I would not run a generator in an enclosed she'd without a fan. Thanks for the compliment. Jim
Ar 7:41 you said your going to have 2 male plugs. You should be using 1 male and 1 female.
Thanks Tim, I will look into that and try to change it.
Great video. Just put together a Suncast yesterday 71×44×50 inches its quite large and the same design as yours. Have a Champion 7500 running watt that we just bought. Price for shed was 600 plus shipping and generator was on sale $899 was $1300. Electrician to hardwire $1000. You gave me some great ideas for venting. Im from Nova Scotia winter's can be harsh. I like the way you have tubing for generator exhaust. Would you have pictures on how to do this please meaning how pipe stays on generator exhaust?Cheers
Shouldn't The Fan Pull All Of The Exhaust out ?? Nice Job ..
Thank you, thank you, thank you - you're the FIRST one to have a gen-shed video that at least I've seen to get the inlet installed on the outside of your house right! (although you referred to it as an outlet and I know from experience that these cost about double what a box and an actual outlet goes for) So many others use an outlet for a 50 amp RV or dryer and that's wrong - they would have a live lead from the generator if they were to connect the cord to the generator and then plug it into their house - again thank you for doing things right with regard to the inlet!
Thanks!
Good job on the panel 👍
Thank you.
Magnets....Pure genius
Thank you.
Very nice retrofit Jim! One of the best that I have seen on YT. Me and my son are in the process of doing this exact shed build. Thanks for some great ideas! 👍👍😉😉
Well done, that's a serious gen shed and set-up 👍🏽
Thank you. It gets the job done.
NO, 2 male plugs is illegal and dangerous .The box on the house should be male and one end of the cord female the same as an extension cord. Two male ends presents the risk of electrocution as if someone unplugs the connection at the house you now have a live male end.
Thanks for pointing that out. I will certainly look into that.
Good video. I know this is several years old but I am just viewing it now. Can you elaborate a little detail on how you built the wooden mount for the fan and fixed it to the plastic wall? Thanks.
Sure, I just bought a few 2" x 3" s and built a basic frame to hold the fan. I screwed it into the plastic box. Hope this helps.
@@jdmac62That is indeed helpful. Did you screw it into the plastic from the outside? Or did you use some kind of brackets?
Looks like great weather protection for the generator. Where I live my neighbors are just a few feet away so I would have to also make the generator shed a sound proofing shed. I am thinking out of concrete instead of plastic.
Outstanding choice of materials and my question is how well has it been holding up after sustained running of the generator on load? Specifically what is the temperature based on the what you’re monitoring from the remote sensor? The Hardyback material where it mates with plastic does not show any signs of melting or distortion? No significant problems with weather or water intrusion in particular? I have the same generator from Costco lol but live in a little more crowded environment so I am investigating constructing a setup very similar to yours but with additional soundproofing/fire resistant materials. Any sticking points or things you found you might do differently after running the machine for a while? Again great affordable setup - finished product looks solid!
Stephen, thank you for the compliments. The set up has worked very well, nothing I would really do differently. While running under load with the fan on for extended periods of time the temp stays around 80 degrees. If it were the middle of August it may be higher, but our powered usually does not go out in summer. Good luck with your set up! I would reccomended higher octane gas and always add Stabil as you never know when you will use it. I added a trickle charger to the battery to keep it charged.
Jim McGovern thanks so much for the response and best of luck!
sr if the generator is gasoline you can do the same. There is no risk that the base of the gas tank gets too hot and dangerous. until temperature can tolerate at most the base of the gas tank. Thank you
Cool chart for knowing what can be ran on generator.
Thank you Charles. It works well for us.
Very nice set up. Would have like to watch a video of your build for it.
Jim, hey nice video, nice setup, I'm in the process of making my own generator enclosure, I've gone the route of treated lumber and sheet metal. I've seen several videos and noticed most have a fan, mounted with a louvered vent. I get it needs airflow, but if the top(lid) and front doors are open, why the need for the fan? Even if I did and exhaust extension to discharge out the side, is a fan needed? My set up is the duromax dual fuel 13000 EH. To the power inlet to the panel (interlock kit) any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated sir. Again awesome video
Ryan, It has been my experience here in the northeast part of the country that when my power goes out, it is usually in a storm, either rain or snow. So my enclosure is usually closed when running to protect it from the elements. Since these generators were not designed to be run in an enclosure they get hot, and not just from the exhaust. The fan is necessary to pull fresh air in and around the genset to keep it from overheating. Especially with your larger genset I would not risk running it in an enclosure without a fan. Especially when you do not know how long it may be running. It is cheap insurance to keep your generator from overheating. Good luck with your project!
Jim, being plastic, can I assume this is a garbage can shed?
It is a multi purpose shed, used for trash cans, pool supplies, etc. It has held up well over the last few years.
Fun!
Great setup. Looks like you have it well thought out and are prepared. It's good to be prepared these days. I like your generator. Especially the remote start. I have one just like it but without. Thank You for the video.
My pleasure. Our power was out for 10 hours the other day and it worked flawlessly.
Nice job
Thank you Rik.
Do you need the wood frame for the exhaust fan?
Hi, Which is more efficient, pushing fresh air in to the shelter or pulling hot air from inside the shelter?
I am not sure. I wanted the fan to be enclosed in the box so this is the only way I could set it up and it works fine.
Hi, what tempetature is expected inside? Maximun?
The fan is set to go on at 80 degrees.
Well done sir
Thank you.
Hi can you show or explain a little more detail on attaching the vent to the generator?
Great video, just wish you would have showed the connection of the reducer attached to the champion exhaust area more !
It was hard to show on video, kind of a design-build as you go project. After I attached the magnets to the reducer it just connects over the exhaust pipe.
Brian,. Thanks, good luck with your set-up. Sounds like a great plan! min works great when I need it.
Hi Jim. I built a similar set up, using the virtual twin of your generator. I lined the whole shed with Hardi backer. The only other thing I did was to wrap the exhaust with a fireproof fibre batt. The Hardi backer did reduce the sound levels as well. Great video as well.
Hi, what temperature is expected inside? Thank
