Reynolda 21 Jun 24 Yellow-crowned Night Heron
This Yellow-crowned Night Heron stood still for some time, and then when it did move it was so stealthy! Within two minutes it had disappeared into the reeds. At Reynolda, in Winston-Salem.

I spotted this Green Heron in the wetlands (Lake Katharine) at Reynolda in Winsto-Salem, NC this morning, along with its mate. I saw it capture breakfast but couldn't video in time when it moved so quickly. But I did shadow its consumption of its prey. Nature is amazing.

I was surprised to hear, and then see, this Hermit Thrush, so close to my deck yesterday morning! It's hard to hear it over the cardinals and Carolina wrens though!

I spotted this Redheaded Woodpecker at the Memory Garden on the shore of Salem Lake, near the dam...right around where I saw one last year! Salem Lake is near Winston-Salem, NC.

I saw a Red-bellied Woodpecker at this nesthole, and then it disappeared...and then it reappeared! Either wait for it (!) ca. 40 secs...or FF to its appearance! At Miller Park in Winston-Salem, NC.

I had just parked at Trout Lake just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Blowing Rock, NC, when the tapping sound of a woodpecker got my attention. I watched this hardworking Pileated Woodpecker for several minutes. It would take a break every few minutes and survey its work...and then resume. Magic!

The chimney swifts of UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC were swirling and roosting in the 100s (1000s?) this evening when I went back to school to practice. It took them another few minutes to get everyone in for the night.

There were several water skimmers on this stream flowing into Trout Lake on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, NC last Sunday, August 20. I was fascinated by the shadows created by the patterns on the water surface, in turn created by the skimmers' legs. The legs themselves are not round at all, but the shadows are!

This male Yellowthroat seemed conflicted: it was very active and quite close, as if it was distracting me from its young ones' location, but at the same time it had breakfast in its beak to deliver to them. Observed at Salem Lake, Linville Road access, near Winston-Salem, NC.

This little one had a helicopter parent not too far away that occasionally checked in, but it was going solo for a while. First time I've seen one. Interesting that it peeps like all other young birds. Redstart, titmouse, wren et al on the airwaves too! Observed along the trail at Salem Lake, Linville Road access, near Winston-Salem, NC.

I was fortunate to spend a few minutes observing this little kinglet near the water's edge at the lake in Reynolda Gardens, in Winston-Salem, NC. It was vocal and colorful and quite tame!

Awwwwwww how cool is this? I had a woodpecker discover how the metal roof on my pole barn sounded as a drum. OMG that was one annoying bird. He seemed quite proud of himself though.

I found one in Kentucky. He had been hit by a car. Broke my heart!!! I understand it's rare for this area. I wrapped him in foil for a burial.
They look like ravens a bit
Very Nice I love Warblers ! A Freind & I rescue songbirds that hit the glass skyscrapers in Newark NJ, Most that hit the skyscrapers perish on impact, or when fall to the cement pavement. TRT made a video named 'Window Strikes in the Business District' of us picking up injured Warblers. At TRT they get a 2nd chance ( hope your little warbler avoids Newark - not a good place for a bird) This morning I recused a Downy woodpecker and a Golden Crowned Warbler, the Downy had lots of blood at base f beak so hoping he will survive..
