‘24 Blacktail Deer Hunt triple header- Hunting BC
Join us on this episode as we head back to Texada island to chase coastal blacktail deer at the start of the rut! There are lots of deer on this tiny island, but don’t be fooled by the numbers, they’re extremely hard to hunt, and you’ll find out very quickly why they call them “ghosts.”
My good friend Seiji joins me on this hunt as we try to bring and end to his 4yr blacktail drought…can we get him connected on a Texada island blacktail buck?? Find out!

    Hey there. Thanks for the video. I have watched most of your videos from Texada. I've been trying to get there over Christmas break but have been sick and then my buddy's bow snapped. Hoping to get there for the last weekend. Never been there, but it seems like it's going to be a challenge with the bow. Any tips with the bow? Should I simply sit and call or is it better to hike through the woods and hope I see one within 40 yards? Also, are vamps needed there? Thanks again and keep posting. Jonathan.

      @@jonathanbrooks2686 Hey Jonathan, I really appreciate the support 🙏 I’m not going to lie, blacktails are a tough hunt at the best of times, and more so when you start trying to bow hunt them…then add the challenge of doing it late season after they’ve been poked at all general season, you’re pretty well stacking the deck against yourself. …that being said though, it’s still probably one of my favourite hunts, and the bonus is that there’s enough deer that you should be able to get opportunities. Still hunting the thick timber is super effective on that island, but it can be tricky to get inside archery range if you don’t have a fair bit of experience. Rain will make your life a little easier because it’ll help hide your noise and they’ll be more active, so you’ll get more chances to get closer. If you’re still fairly new to archery, finding an active game trail and setting up an ambush will probably be your most effective bet, and I find calling can be pretty effective. They can be very nocturnal, so right at first and last light is going to be your prime time. Not sure what you mean by, “vamps,” might be a type-o, or I might just be drawing a blank, haha Best of luck though man, enjoy the hunt, it’s one of my favs!

      @@cheechakooutdoors Thanks a lot. It is much appreciated. And here I have been withholding because of the rain. ha... I like sunny days but maybe I should head up on the rainy days. By vamps I mean the gaiters. I'm originally from Newfoundland and moved here 6 years ago so now learning to hunt west coast style, which has been both fun and challenging. So, yeah, do you find the gaiters are needed at all or just something you would definitely recommend? Thanks again and have a good one.

    • @cheechakooutdoors
      @cheechakooutdoors 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ The rain is definitely your friend when it comes to hunting blacktails, haha…the worse the weather, the better the hunting. As far as gaiters, they’re a pretty useful piece of kit. Hunting the coast, especially the islands, you’ll find out very quickly that there’s a big difference between water proof and water resistant. It rains here…A LOT…and these little deer live the rain, so you’re going to get wet. Even when it’s not raining, everything is still soaked, and if you can stay dry, you’ll stay in the field longer and in turn have better chances of success. Rain gear is just not always quiet, so the gaiters are a nice middle ground if it’s not pouring. They keep your feet and lower legs dry without making a ton of noise stalking through the brush. The HUTO Lifestyle rain gear I ran this year was really good. Kept all the water out and it wasn’t too noisy as far as rain gear goes. Let me know how you make out 👊

    I keep going back and forth between this machine , a foreman 520, or a kodiak / grizzly 700. I love the simplicity of this machine and the pull start. Have you run into a situation where you wish you had a diff lock? Only thing I wish it had. For realistic hunting ATV and exploring, with some farm chores , is this the right machine? I’m no speed demon who goes rat bagging Thanks!

    • @cheechakooutdoors
      @cheechakooutdoors 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jamesl2697 Hey James, I’ve honestly never run into an issue where I wish I had that diff lock, and I’ve had it in some pretty challenging situations. I’d say that for 90% of what you’ll ever use it for, it’ll serve you well. The only situation I’ve found where I wished I had more machine was on my wife’s moose hunt, and I was using it as a 2-up, which was fine, but that combined with the whole moose loaded onto it coming back out was obviously a lot for it. That being said, it did do it, just slowly. I’d say if it’s just you riding it, it’s more than enough machine for your basic hunting, outdoors, farm uses. Easy to work on, reliable and capable. If you’re looking for something to 2-up more often, or haul a fair bit of weight with, I’d consider bumping up to the foreman or the rubicon. **side note on the grizz 700…I’ve never owned one, but my buddy did until it got stolen, and I used it for a few trips before I bought my own. Super capable machine 👍

    • @jamesl2697
      @jamesl2697 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Congrats on the moose , thanks for the reply. Nice to speak to someone who owns one. I had a 2016 base model kodiak 700 with no diff lock and never needed it. At the time I was self conscious about not having a diff lock but honestly I hunt solo most of the time and if I need diff lock to get somewhere … well I’m probably better off to park it there and walk. I like the idea of small machine to get into some tight spots to pack or drag out moose or elk. A whole moose on the Honda ? That’s impressive… The foreman only comes in red , and for me it’s almost a deal breaker lol. Love the green rancher for looks. Thanks bro. Happy new year

    National deer association says tarsal gland removal is an old wives tale and spreads bacteria unnecessarily. Bacteria that will make humans sick. Leave it alone

    • @cheechakooutdoors
      @cheechakooutdoors หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you’re getting a little confused with the information you read. Firstly, when skinning a deer out you would be removing the tarsal gland regardless, so you’d never, “leave it alone.” Secondly, the point I make about using a separate knife for the gland than for the rest of the deer is to avoid spreading that bacteria across the rest of the meat; although, if you wipe the meat down properly with a warm water/vinegar solution before you hang it, that should eliminate any off chance of bacteria. The old wives tale is that leaving the gland on, and not removing it right away, taints the meat. The amount of time you leave it on is irrelevant, but you absolutely do have to be careful when removing it so you don’t spread the secretion it produces across the rest of the meat. That will absolutely taint your meat and spread bacteria. Hope that helps clear things up!

      @@mometis8116 it was definitely a weird problem to have. The insert that the swivel mount screws into is still in there, but it’s split clean in half length-wise. @@cheechakooutdoors I don't eat bear meat, so I don't hunt them, but I'm not sure how anyone could be upset that you are hunting bears for meat! Last year, one of the farmers where I hunt, was offering $200 a bear because they were eating his profits away. I still don't like shooting stuff I don't eat but I did him a favour and shot two and I could have shot at least 10 more. No, I didn't take the $400 he was paying out because him letting me hunt on 6 sections of cleared land is a big deal. My close farmer buddy (who lets me stay in his yard) and him both own about 6 sections of cleared land each so I am super lucky! Even though I don't hunt bear, I watched your video because I admire your hunting ability plus the insanely hard hunts you do every year! Sorry, long comment!
