How do I know if I can get symmetrical download and upload in my area? Right now I’m 1gb down 100 up
This all depends on which type of Virgin Media you have checkout my blog to find out which you have you need XGSPON for symmetric fttppro.co.uk/the-three-types-of-virgin-media-broadband/
Nice setup. In my apartment I have a UPS for backup, but it doesn't help since we use HFC fiber to Coax configuration at the POP for the building that does not have a power backup courtesy of the cable company. So, when power goes down in the building, I lose my internet because the HFC has lost power. When power returned the HFC reconnected to the Rogers CO. But I still must power cycle by router and my Xfinity boxes since they come back faster than the HFC (It takes about three minutes to complete the connection as far as I can tell) Rogers has no interest in adding a UPS to the HCF configuration since we are a low income building and our outages are typically a couple of times a year for less than 5 minutes on average so Rogers representative has explained ot me.
Thank you for the kind feedback. Sorry to hear about your internet setup not having a UPS do you have the option for 4/5G broadband as a backup which you could run off your own UPS?
@@nsmmedia My backup is an iPad with a sim card and a minimal data plan. I conidered setting p a 6G failover but its difficult ot do with Rogers unless i have a business account. I am hoping Rogers will see the logic of enhancing redundancy in the future as the entire neighborhood as new condo projct come oneline.
I use 5G from a different company to my main FTTP ISP for extra redundancy they both in turn go though my PFSense router which handles auto failover.
Here in Toronto, I am in a low-income building and use the local cable providers discount plan. They recently upgraded our premises connection to a HFC Hybrid Fiber coax POP fiber connection to the building (FTTB?) that then runs RG56 CATV to the units. It's an easy way to get rid of the aging copper plant i the neighborhoods without having to spend any money re-cabling the actual building units. Rogers have split the building into two HFC Nodes leading back to the single fiber connection that has an HFC control module of some sort. Unfortunately, the installers (third party contractors that spoke extraordinarily little English) were not interested in talking about the setup. They were told where to put the boxes and how to power them. and where to connect the fiber. I got most of the information by looking at the boxes they were throwing in the garbage. and taking pictures when they left the boxes open on the side of the building during their breaks and lunches. the Fiber itself was installed by another third-party contractor (They were even less willing to talk to me) and told me to call Rogers) They knew nothing about the architecture or configuration. One for each face of the building (East side and west side) It's been remarkably stable with only one major outage due to a regional power failure lasting several hours. The downside to the HFC configuration is that it relies on building power for its operation and Rogers is not interested in installing a UPS to keep both nodes operational since power failures typically last only a few minutes. The HFC nodes will re-establish their connection when they get powered up. Then we must manually cycle our routers to re-establish the connection to the HFC Nodes. Now on top of this we also use Xfinity for our cable TV. which establishes a wireless connection to the router in our unit with a private hidden VPN. The VPN Channel is fully encrypted as well so getting the details even with packet sniffing would not be possible without the decryption key and it is a session-based key from what I have been told. Thus, it changes every time the router is power cycled, and a new connection is established. So, even with a direct fiber connection I could not work directly from my own router unfortunately. I would still need the Rogers router for the Xfinity session.
Hey, Thanks for this video and the guide you done, very much appreciated, I will be following this all very shortly, got my new router, WAS-110 on their way, however I need to get the LC/APC to SC/APC, You have kindly linked to a cable on amazon, but is there also just an adaptor to convert the existing VM cable to SC/APC, if possible can you link one that will work or reccommended, I want to ensure I don't order the wrong adaptor, thank you
Hey Alan thank you for your kind feedback glad you found the video useful. Here is a link to an adaptor that I know someone else has used with this setup Iacob Adapter/Coupler for Fibre Optic Singlemode Simplex LC SC UPC APC (1, LC/APC - LC/APC)

Hi I have city fibre network installed to my address and having trouble choosing between A&A, IDNet, Yayzi, or Zen. These are supposedly the top 4 ISP’s from my research. The broadband will be used for working from home and mobile gaming. I am based in Coventry, West Midlands. Which of the ISP’s would you recommend and is a static IP required so I don’t have CGNAT? All help is appreciated.
Hi Elusive12, I’ve used Andrew’s and Arnold and IDNet before and both are very good and provide static IPv4 and IPv6 as standard and let you use own router etc. Zen are also meant to be good from what I hear all those three I know offer good customer support . Yayzi I’ve heard mixed things about and not had any experience of yet but I believe they are cheaper.
Wouldn't touch VM with a barge pole, currently on a city fibre connection 1gb up/down, switching isp's Thursday and getting upto 2.5gb up/down as this area now has the XGS-PON upgrade.
You have two "Sticks" in the last pic. Were you doing Failover? I'm trying to look into auto gateway failover with Ubiquiti Shadow mode.
Hi Les, yes I have multi wan gateway failover configured in my PFSense Router which works pretty well 👍

The B&W variant has been used during closedown in the mid-90's, but this variant wasn't (it was used into Ceefax from 1998-1999).
This ident might have been the "default" ident from 1995-1997 when the network transmission area opened, and it was replaced by "Swan" from 1998 onwards. Hence it was the ident most commonly used for closedowns during that time.
Along with Optic, Steam, Car and Shadow, this ident was most likely to be used whenever BBC2 closed down for the night in the mid-90's.
I was on Virgin Media all went well until I tried to report a fault.

I assume you use the Virgin HUB in modem mode since you have better equipment? This is something I'm gonna be doing in a couple of weeks when they install VM into my home.
Hi Martin, I’m using a WAS-110 SFP+ module instead of the hub 5x due to lack of proper working modem mode see my latest video for how I set it up.
Is this 4k or bluray the clip ??
Clips were taken from the BluRay the video itself is produced in 4K
@@nsmmedia ive got the bluray, getting a bluray for 80 0r 90 quid, hope its good looks good.
will Virgin implement anything that can cause this not to work in future
It’s certainly possible just one of the risks you take with this solution.
Im a total noob when it comes to VLAN's can someone help me with connecting the PON fibre module to sharing its internet across my network?
Feel free to reach out via the 8311 discord and we can help you on there 👍
@@nsmmedia Thanks I will do!
I’m trying to,figure out here the ‘0 point’ is for the fibers?
Stunning the genius Jeff lynne
For MikroTik from the console, you use; /interface ethernet set sfp1 auto-negotiation=no /interface ethernet set sfp1 disable-running-check=yes This turns off management of the SFP port to manage the speed it can connect at, and will turn on the optics on the SFP. Make sure you have a dust cover in place on the optics so not to blind yourself. 'sfp1' is the sfp interface in RouterOS.
Looks like Virgin have enabled 'modem mode' on the 5x router again, not sure if it has issues. Any thoughts?
Ariel Estate
Don't know why they don't just do this from the start
After getting the Hub 5x a month ago I've been through all the hoops of trying to get modem mode to work, with absolutely no success I stumbled upon your website yesterday and I'm definitely giving this a go. Thanks for taking the time to cover it in such detail, it's a shame Virgin don't really seem to care. I have a full unifi network with AP's, cameras, dream machine etc... and I'm not going to just use their awful wifi hub because they can't get modem mode working.
Youll be taking away the smart monitoring feature that the Hub5x uses to test for any area issues ect. Samknows monitoring wont relay back to the servers and cause issues resulting in technicians being booked to your address for BB issues ect.
Unfortunately that monitoring/ testing was causing issues especially for people with GiG2 VM have had to disable it on a lot of lines for now see www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2024/08/virgin-media-uk-working-to-fix-ping-spikes-on-2gbps-broadband-lines.html I’m not aware of any technicians coming out as a result of using the WAS-110 nor VM contact anyone due to lack of monitoring. Everyone I know who has changed to using a WAS-110 has had a more stable and better performing broadband connection.
not from the UK but good to See Virgin is finally Doing FTTP BT/openreach has been doing them for years now
Is it still IPv4 only?
To be fair at least in the US alot of our providers even fiber providers are IPv4 only... i have been bugging my ISP for about a year for IPv6
If your on Virgin Media then yup it’s IPv4 only there are ways round that ie using an AAISP L2TP service
Seems VM will never roll out naitive IPV6. @@nsmmedia
sent this over to my friends at Virgin to see what they've got to say. this is almost definitely against tos
Ok Karen
@@westtell4 mate i've been on virgin since it was ntl. why should these new ppl coming in get to do as they please when we've followed the rules for years.
@@Martin1989-m4z it’s not there fault you have followed the rules or are not technically inclined to do this. ISPs shouldn’t limit us to crappy hardware I have done this with my XGS-pon service. Just because you had to experience it doesn’t mean the rest of us have to suffer with it. I’m not even in the uk and never used virgin but American isps are just as terrible
@@Martin1989-m4z what the hell are you drivelling on about? I've been on virgin since diamond cable, pre-ntl, every single version I've been able to use Modem mode so that I can use my own networking hardware instead of the crap you get from the ISP. XGS-pon and the hub 5x is the first time we haven't had a modem mode. If virgin were bothered about it they'd offer a proper modem mode for us. This is a great solution until they do.
@@Martin1989-m4z because the "rules" are flawed. VM have provided hardware for XGS-PON connections which are buggy, and not fit for purpose (missing features, even compared to their other service types). Look at the lack of modem mode here, or the numerous bugs with Intel Puma chipsets on prior models. Consumers have had enough of ISPs supplying garbage hardware. Consider other European countries which enforce a right for consumers to be able to run their own CPE. That's the right way to do it.
Sent this over to my friends at virgin to see what they've got to say.. this can't be allowed
Yawn, don't you have anything better to do lol
@@coolvideos8864 us lot on the cable network dont get this choice so why should you lot get to.
At least on VMs DOCSIS network you have fully working modem mode to allow people to use their own routers. On the Hub5X (at the time of writing) Modem Mode is not fully working which is the main reason people are using the WAS sticks to enable them to use their own routers which is permitted in the TOS. VM are upgrading their HFC and RFOG DOCSIS areas to XGSPON over the next few years which means everyone on VM will be on XGSPON. I hope Virgin Media do see this may spur them on to fixing Modem Mode on the Hub 5X and or provide XGSPON customers with a separate ONT.
Yawn. Stay in your own lane, it doesn't affect you.
@@dbrose77 I beg to differ, seeing how I have a PON Stick and your a male Karen so it’s like shooting fish in a barrel to upset you
I heard that with GPON the Max they can gave you is 2,5 Gbit Download and 1,25 Gbit Upload can i get Symmetrical Speeds Up 1 Gig with GPON too,or do i need XGS-PON or AON,greetings from Germany at the meanwhile i have Docsis 3.1 from Vodafone with 1 Gigabit Download and 50 Mbps Upload Ping is very good 5-10ms to the near Server when i test with the Ookla App for Windows i have a FritzBox 6690 Cable with a 2,5 Gbit Port in my PC i got a 2,5 Gbit LAN Card with the Overprovisioning from Vodafone i get around 1100 Mbps Download and 50 Mbps Upload Ping 5-6ms no Packet loss nothing im very Happy but very soon i get Fiber Optic to via GPON then i got 1100 Download and 550 Mbps Upload ❤😊
Your right that GPON only supports 2.5Gbps down and 1.25Gbps up per trunk port which is usually shared with 32 people. While there are some GPON based ISPs that do offer symmetric usually its Asymmetric speeds on GPON. XGSPON on the other hand supports 10Gbps symmetric per pon port/trunk
And Virgin could have just added modem mode or allowed users to request an ONT instead of a hub5x, complete inflexibility.
Reasons for that being that the network needs to be able to monitor the customers equipment to test for any issues with PON ID, IP address, light levels ect, general issues in the area ect either with the local OLT exchange or eCin cabinets.
@@EpicXProtocol and now what they get is unknown hardware in use on their network instead. Feels like they shot themselves in the foot there tbh.
IP host MAC needs to be the one on the bottom of the hub or you'll get a false O5. Mine was different to the :01 MAC.
Intresting works fine for me with that MAC address guess they may be updating their systems to lock to MACs on the Hub 5x rather than use the same one
@@nsmmedia I think mine was 50:52 instead of 00:01. When I used the 01 I got a false O5, everything looked good but got no IP or connection.
Great video. Are you able to add a link for the cable or adapter to attach the fibre to the WAS-110 so we don’t buy the wrong thing?
Thank you - Added link to vid description now amzn.eu/d/9qHy2zz
Cool stuff as always, is there a performance difference between the WAS-110 and the Hub 5x, in terms of speed?
Thank you, The WAS-110 supports full 10Gbps speed of XGSPON therefore if you pay for Gig2 you will get full Gig2 speeds on the WAS-110 and same latency. You wont get any of VM's automated speed tests that have been known to cause performance issues on the Hub 5x so you may find it performs better.
@@nsmmedia glad to hear I can circumvent those issues once XGS-PON is available in my area 👍
Great to watch such an informative video, thanks for posting! I live in a small town who are only just getting VM rolled out so nice to see that these new technologies replacing DOCSIS make all the difference for reliability.
Did they do your entire town? And did they do it all at once? They’re building here but not my street yet 😢
@ still waiting for the line to go live, I can’t say I’ve seen any other works ongoing so maybe it’s just behind-the-scenes work ongoing to prep for launch now
Typically takes up to a year for Nexfibre to build and go live must say they are pretty quick at building compared to others. Keep an eye on my fibre checker on my website to see when your live fttppro.co.uk
Nexfibre usually cover as much of a town as possible either using PIA (using Openreach duct and poles) or digging their own trenches. Here in Shrewsbury they did it in phases and half of the town was built by VM under a different project using RFoG where as my half is Nexfibre XGSPON

Yup that’s very true
here in egypt they only use Huawei and zte infrastrucure, ithink they are cheaper because the main telecom provider is literally installing fiber to millions of homes at the same time
A great video we just had M500 installed about 2 months ago and very happy compared to are very slow BT, thank you once again
In 1975, Doctor Who has been given a task that took him into the heart of Dalek Country, Tom Baker relives that experience now on 2, in part 1 of Genesis of the Daleks.

@nsmmedia has your ping gone up the last few days?? mines gone to crap now >.<
Hi Martyn nope latency still the same for me 2.7ms to gateway/core router in Birmingham and 6-9ms to London based services. Is there a particular site/IP your having latency issues with?
Even alough ive took full fibre how much data comes with my contract.
Not sure if you mean data allowance ie how much data your allowed to download or do you mean bandwidth ie how fast your connection is? If it’s the first one then almost all fixed line ISPs in the UK offer unlimited data this will be stated on the providers website when you signed up to the service. For the bandwidth this will be as per the package you signed up to.
