Pub Battles Antietam solo replay, Hooker's Corps bleeds out North of the West woods!
Note in this video I have the fresh units labels up, and spent units labels down, which is the reverse of the rules, but works better for the video.

I forgot to add the Pan & Zoom effects before I loaded Antietam17. Here is the more fully edited version, Plus I added a counter for the number of times McClellan hit Jackson's left flank. You can almost see the old Samhorn Leghorn cartoon with Jackson saying, "Boy, now boy" and the little Chickenhawk (McClellen) saying "I'm a chickenhawk, and you're a chicken!"

A dramatic and explosive ending to a very desperately fought battle! Reading accounts of Waterloo, you learn how everybody was pushed to the extreme, and thoroughly exhausted by their efforts at day's end. This battle felt exactly like that. Both the Allied and French armies were one unit away from breaking before one side broke and ran.

    Great summary. Has anyone written up how to create new battles and scenarios using this rules set? I love the current selection of scenarios but am interested in setting up a series of battles, just as Command Post did for the Waterloo Campaign but for the various 1809 camaigns in Poland, Austria and Italy.

      I made my own game with drawing maps and cutting/painting wooden blocks. I have a small scenario from 1849, the battle of Isaszeg, from the Hungarian independence war. I had a little research about the fighting armies and places, then I created a kinda accurate list of the forces (Hungarian and Austrian) and created labels for them that I glued on the painted wooden blocks. Then the big work started by creating the maps by hand. I finished with 3 maps and two armies. (There are two smaller maps and a big one). And that's it. The rest is in the history book.😂

      With the chit draw that would be a lot of getting up and down each turn! I also am recording a video, so that would involve moving the camera each time. Also, I roleplay each commander, moving based on what I imagine his orders are and what he knows. Finally, my study, where I play, is not large enough to position the table in the center. If I wanted to go to all the trouble, I could come up with a lazy-susan type of setup, but it just isn't that important to me. Plus, I usually enjoy a game with a human opponent about once or twice a month, which allows me to get all the Fog of War I need. 😊

      Sorry< Bill. I answered this from my phone right after you posted. It showed on my phone that is posted, but now on my desktop, no comment! The Artillery activated when the AR chit is drawn. The Union had a more centralized control that allowed for more powerful bombardments, but the South had a more flexible control that allowed for more specific bombardments. It is easier for the South to support an attack, but it is easier for the North to damage a line.

    • @gull2112
      @gull2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The nice thing about that effect is that it shows who is firing/combatting. Wellington was putting himself between The French army and Brussels, but the British army was what the French were after. IOW, they wouldn't march past his army. Another point worth making, is that it doesn't guarantee a British victory. Even if the IV Cavalry Corps hadn't snuck through the woods, all either side had to do was destroy one unit. Interesting note, The French had lost way more points than the Brits, with heavy guard and cavalry losses. Another reason they HAD to win. Very tense, indeed. The way Waterloo should feel!

    Hi Mike, I hope you can help me out with a problem regarding artillery bombardment in genral: If a cavalry was to attack an infantry unit, could an artillery bombard the cavalry on it's move forward, if it is positioned on a hill behind the friendly infantry? And if so, would a successful bombardment (two or three hits) stop the cavalry charge or would you still have to roll for the battle between cavalry and infantry?

    • @gull2112
      @gull2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, Hans! You can never fire over your own troops, so the answer is no. If your artillery is off to the side and can see the attacking unit without passing over friendly troops, then you could bombard the attacker. Merely being adjacent doesn't prevent the bombardment, only firing over your own troops. Hope this helps.

    • @hansklok3384
      @hansklok3384 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gull2112 Thank you for your quick reply :) Would there still be a battle between infantry and cavalry if a bombardment, such as you described, were successful (and therefor should make the cavalry retreat)?

    • @gull2112
      @gull2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hansklok3384 If the cavalry is eligible to use the Charge rule when its chit is drawn, then that combat is immediate and no artillery fire would be possible. If it attacks normally, then the combat isn't resolved until the combat phase. If the chit for the artillery piece is drawn after the cavalry has moved to attack the infantry, then bombardment could occur (assuming LOS). Since combat is not ordinarily resolved until the combat phase, the Charge rule, which allows certain elite units (by scenario definition) to attack immediately when they move, is a very powerful rule. In the game above, since the attacking Russian Guard Cavalry could use the charge rule, the Baggage Train did not have an opportunity to move away before the Russian attack, and it was sacked. Even though it was not unpacked and still mobile, it did not have a chance to move away. To examine this deeper, if the Coalition player had attacked with one of the Austrian cavalry blocks, which can't use the charge rule, then the Baggage Train could have moved away when it's chit was drawn. Let me know if this leaves you if this detailed response leaves you with more questions than answers!

    • @gull2112
      @gull2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bill, thanks for asking. This the way I play, which is not approved by the game's designer. A flank attack only counts if two opposing units are contacting the defender. Since the wood blocks force the unit to be in a straight line, I assume that the unit's commander could be refusing a flank, unless contacted on both sides. Note that a rear attack by a single unit is still a flank attack.

In game terms, I was kind of waiting to see if he passed towards the center (the original plan) and if so, Washington was better positioned to deal with that. Finally, Brandywine is a very short game, and it is difficult for a British player to come on that side and engage in a meaningful manner. Wisdom gained after many games.

      Around about 8:00 minutes the pressure really gets ramped up. The South has the bags so close they can taste the hard tack, but the Union has 2 fresh Corps coming on, if Meade can just keep the tide out of reach!

    How do you like the metal? Those are painted?

    • @gull2112

      I love the metal, very heavy. I'm not one to worry about the slight jostling of blocks, but for those who are, this is a solution (If you have a friend who is a machinist and can get 3/8" key stock). They were just a dull gray before I painted them. Prohibitively expensive to buy: Almost $10 for one 12" length on Amazon. Then you still have to cut it and machine the edges. I was lucky to have a friend who fished some out of the trash bin at work. www.amazon.com/STEELWORKS-BOLTMASTER-11176-Square-Steel/dp/B004678AFU/ref=sr_1_3?crid=337V8QFIDSLJC&keywords=3%2F8%2Bkey%2Bstock&qid=1639862408&sprefix=3%2F8%2Bkey%2Bstock%2Caps%2C103&sr=8-3&th=1

    Love the slower format, Mike! My goodness, the fog plus hidden reserve rules make this tense. I came to your channel to watch a few games before ordering Austerlitz, can’t wait. 🙂 A couple of pronunciation notes: (1) Jean Lannes: his last name has one syllable, like “van”. (The pronunciation “Lan-ay” would require an accented é, or different vowels altogether like Desaix, which *is* pronounced “Duh-zay”.) Source: I am Canadian, have been speaking French since I was a toddler. 2nd source: the Wagram video from an excellent French Napoleonic battles series, th-cam.com/video/jvxBcfTZ7z0/w-d-xo.html , starts by summarizing Aspern-Essling where Lannes perished, and “le Maréchal Lannes” can be heard at 0:37. (2) Pyotr Bagration: the “t” is pronounced like an isolated t and the “o” is long, “Bah-grah-tee-OWN”. Source: worked with many Russians in Europe, but better, see this video by native Russian speakers about the town “Bagrationovsk” that was named after him (formerly Eylau): th-cam.com/video/hVitic7DEtM/w-d-xo.html , pronunciation audible at 0:08

      While we're at it, Soult is pronounced, "Soo". I used to know the correct pronunciation of Knyphausen. I might forget part of it now... I think it is something like Kye-f-how-sen.

      @@marshallbarrington4986 Hurray, more language discussion! 🤓🤓 Since youtube threads usually devolve into name-calling about 8 messages in, let me just say: it is perfectly normal for people speaking language X to pronounce names from language Y as if they were in language X, such as Paris, Rome, or Napoleon itself. This thread is simply about how people from the region where the name originates pronounce it, if one is interested. No shame in any direction! I enjoy language and chasing down the local pronunciation of things, and Mike has expressed interest in such, so this is a nice place to chat about it. 🙂 (3) Knyphausen is pronounced Knip-how-zen or Knüp-how-zen in German, where ü is the “sharp” u sound in the French word “rue” that English speakers have trouble with unless they learned French or German or such as a kid. Source 1: I speak German and have worked in Germany; I would pronounce it the second way. Here are two interviews in German with German folk singer Gisbert zu Knyphausen where you can hear this pronunciation three seconds in: th-cam.com/video/oxG9aXcBdSM/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/HfTVT4PQ4rI/w-d-xo.html . Source 2: Here is Gisbert pronouncing his own name: th-cam.com/video/Fz8wh57XyTE/w-d-xo.html at 0:33. He says it more like Knip-how-zen, which could be regional, or just sloppiness (like pronouncing “exit” as “eggsit” because it’s easier; my mom corrected me all the time for that 🙂). (4) Soult: This one is really interesting. In standard modern French, the “lt” is indeed silent. However, the marshal’s name is pronounced “SooLT”, with each consonant pronounced, in every source I consider reliable. Source 1: The marshal’s Wikipedia article has this pronunciation in its IPA key. It also reveals that he was from the Occitania region in southern France, which might be the reason: the traditional dialect of southern France is a French-Catalan blend, it sounds Spanish and voices final consonants (e.g. “raison” in French with silent n maps to “razón” in Spanish with voiced n). The other possible reason is that his family preserved the old medieval pronunciation of their name, i.e. the pronunciation that matches the spelling. (Letters going silent generally happens with time, as spoken language keeps changing even after spelling has been frozen on written pages.) Source 2: Here are two Napoleonic videos in French, both pronouncing the LT: th-cam.com/video/sVvqR9A--Pg/w-d-xo.html at 18:43 & 19:35, about the Spanish campaign, and th-cam.com/video/tTkR9JPi7dE/w-d-xo.html at 39:22. The latter video goes through all of Napoleon’s marshals and is done by a fellow who studied Napoleonic history at university. It is a nice capstone on our discussion to observe that he mispronounces several NON-French names, i.e. pronounces them as if they were French (Marengo, Eylau, Friedland).
