If you like that sort of stuff, you're welcome to subscribe to keep up with my latest videos. I do videos on all sorts of stuff, from testing out some old laptop I've just gotten my hands on, to fixing stuff up, to tutorials on a whole variety of stuff as well. It's a variety, but if you're into vintage tech stuff in general, I think you'll probably enjoy most of what I have to offer.

Is it mere coincidence or white plastic seems to be less brittle?
Hard to say. The beige plastic is typically better, but it’s also around 1993 that most laptops started switching to gray or black.
@@3lectr1c Yeah. It may be the process of coloring the plastic (I dont have any knowledge in this), or it may be a simple coincidence.
I got some PERFECT condition, functional thinkpads from the late 90's. Upon opening them, they snapped in half. I grabbed the chassis and squeezed and they crumbled in my hands. Sad does not begin to explain it!
on ipod touh 4 ios 6 working?
Claims the plastic is brittle. Proceeds to use tools to pry the plastic off...

WOWEEE JUST WAIT TELL HE LEARNS HINGES ON LAPTOPS ARE DESIGNED TO FAIL

thank you awesome
ABS doesn’t like heat. I think some ABS had treatment to stop this.
Not just additives, but manufacturing technique as well. Injection pressure, injection speed, cooling time, and cooling temperature can all have an effect on how the exact same plastic can have wildly different properties across a manufacturing run. Plastics are an extremely complicated science that's still evolving even to this day.
I had a GameBoy Advance SP that disintegrated like that second laptop case. Luckily replacement cases for those are plentiful.
Honestly, the best thing you could do if you process e-waste is to get a 3d scanner and scan the parts that can be replicated on a 3d printer. I'm sure the Internet Archive would love to keep them safe!!
Dells from 20 years ago have a metal bracket inside the lid, IBMs too. I've seen Latitudes CPi still break the plastic hinges. CPx era uses tougher plastic.
Old Thinkpads with a rubber coating (such as T20) have that coating disintegrate and it can be very messy. Older Microsoft mouse with that coating on the grips also has the same problem. Dell D410 laptops have their hinges seize, so it can break the plastic. Got some new hinges, but was able to save some old ones with some penetrating oil and then moving the hinges back an forth for a while.
The Compaq lid probably failed due to overall fatigue from use overtime. You see it a lot in mid-2000's/2010's HP systems with the same hinge design. Beefy plastic covers that hide small anchor points that the hinge ties down to that weaken from excess fatigue due to the leverage the size of the screen provides.
By 2010 they were already breaking at the hinges. It sucked, not to mention the Nvidia GPUs failing due to shoddy soldering and heat on some models.
Quite possibly, although it is exceedingly common in these. I’d assume that plays a factor though, along with the hinges growing stiffer with time.
@@Omega_Mark oh HP's and other super common laptops with the same design into plastic rather than metal alloys like a thinkpad often had the same outcome within 5 years or so. there are plenty that survive, but even more with failed hinge points.
Have you tried using an age old technique known as super glue (not the elmers type the real one) and baking soda? Works wonder for repair and you can reform hinges.."Nothing can be done about it." IDK not having them exposed to UV light constantly. Not using ISO or similar cleaners, not retrobrighting everything
I tried to repair brittle ABS with superglue, when holding the broken pieces together, it started to crack in a new spot. Ended up going from 3 cracks to 10.
@@av_oid That's because ABS dissolves in super glue. LOL.
ABS dissolves in MEK, which is a type of bonded (not exactly glue though). And yeah as av_oid said - it just doesn’t work. *fixing* cracks doesn’t do much because the underlying material is so weak. Epoxy glob works because it adds structural material.
how can i do this on mac os 12?
I've got a Compaq Armada 4131T from 1996 or thereabouts - it's in amazing condition, except for the docking station and hinge plastics. I swear they'll get another crack if I look at them wrong. Unfortunately that machine has a problem where it gets stuck at the RAM test, and doesn't go any further, so investigation is due. I'm not really in a hurry to get it going, since my ThinkPad 310 is doing the job of playing mid 90's games nicely, except for the DSTN panel, but I've gotten used to that pretty quickly. BTW I released a video of it some 2 months ago where I show the fix I used for the slightly cracked hinges - it's still holding up a-okay, and I've done some 20-30 cycles to it already. Knock on wood!
Yeah the Armada 4000s have it bad - they screwed the hinges directly through the display housing, which puts too much stress on the plastic. Not a good design.
@@3lectr1c I actually didn't know that before I bought it. The cracks didn't show up on the seller's pictures. Wondering about the possible remedy for these machines. Lots of epoxy and superglue I guess?
The Satellite Pro 430CDT (mines from Dec 96) Have the tape inside decomposing and smells funky and mine it brittle
And also something in the original 1.26gb hhd has a funky smell too
High Detail Resin Print ing is high detail and durable printable plastic
It is quickly improving - I’m going to make myself learn CAD soon so I can start making replacement case clips and the like. I think in another 10 years we’ll be able to make some stuff that’s way better at replacing entire case pieces
Dell had a line of laptops in the early 90s - the 316LT and 320LT. The hinges on those started breaking after a few months of use. It turned out that the grease used on the hinges reacted with the plastic and turned it brittle.
Had no idea those had a problem with that. They must have fixed it at some point because I see intact ones up for sale pretty often
I am doing this break to an ipod touch in the coming days. I have Windows 10 installed and I need to make sure the jailbreak application wont give my computer harmful malware. Can anyone answer this?
Both of my Contura 3/25C systems had completely sheared off hinge mounts. I had no choice but to try restoration. They’re rare and cannot be swapped with first gen Contura systems. One is nothing but epoxy and the other involved a lot of plastic welding. So far so good.
Still better than laptops nowadays shipping with this factory new!
It is indeed very depressing to see modern laptops using the same exact garbage hinge mounting design that all these 90s laptops used
@@3lectr1c even the famous Nintendium went to heaven with the DSphat, my first device to ever fail physically - torn apart by itself
I’ve heard baaaad things about the plastics on those
@@3lectr1cit seems like HP looked at the Contura and said “this is great let’s do it again!”
Nah, they looked at their own 90s laptops. The 90s OmniBooks have utterly horrid plastics and hinge mounts.
If you're wondering why uploads have been so incredibly slow this year, it's because my motivation has hit a low point, not necessarily because I don't like making content here, but because I've been so incredibly focused on creating content on my website! Overall great video. Just wish you showed how you took off and put on your new screen with the adaptor. Struggling to find videos/guides when using youtube. But overall, glad to see that old Thinkpads still get love and care!

holy shit thank you so much i was stuck and about to give up but then i found your video and it worked a+
Do u have ipa for Instagram iOS 7.1.2???
FUCK AND SH!T ABOUT THE QUALITY
hey, how has this system performed for you and do you still use it? also do you think i could do the same with a t420?
It performs fantastically - since the video I have also upgraded to a quad-core i7-3840QM processor which literally doubles the CPU performance. Still completely usable for heavy web browsing and light programming, that sort of thing. Pretty much everything I do except gaming and video editing can be done as good on the T430 as it can on my gaming laptop. That being said - the quad core processor really really pushes the T430’s thermals (but it does work), and I also would highly, highly recommend getting a 3720QM instead of the 3840QM because it’s like 5% slower for a fraction of the price. As for the T420 - everything I did here can be done to a T420 as well, it’s just gonna be a bit slower since it’s 2nd gen Intel vs. 3rd gen. You’d want a 2720QM or 2760QM for a T420 as a processor upgrade for example. You also of course don’t have to do the keyboard mod on a T420 since it already has the 7 row keyboard. I just went with the T430 since it is faster and since it has USB 3.0. The main drawbacks to doing a project like this is that the battery life is gonna suck no matter what, and it’s not in any way cost effective when compared to buying a used 8th gen or 10th gen laptop instead (ie, T480 or T14 Gen 1). That wasn’t the point for me though - it was for the fun of it.
