Such a great interview ❤ there is genuine interest, knowledge and understanding ❤ thanks a lot 🎉
You haven’t mentioned the building code re: earthquake. I’m sure that these old properties are not structurally sound.
Very insightful albeit spoken very hastily!
35:47 had to blush a little when andrii stared and smiled directly into the camera. such a shame he's not in front of the camera anymore.
nice try andri
I too did "things" in college to make ends meet lol.

Let’s gooooo Nynyhon🤩🤩🤩
Loved this really insightful and thoughtful discussion. It's very helpful to understand how you navigated a new culture and what you worked hard on so that you could have a positive and successful experience
started listening to/following idols since late 2016. just want to add to the "graduation" comment: it still feels like this is saying that "you are expected/required to graduate from a group at [x] age" and while may be true in some cases, is not the case for all. While it is uncommon to see an idol group member over 30, the overwhelming majority of groups I have followed/been following have never had a forced graduation due to member age. other than that, i appreciated this was a nice balanced discussion rather than going in with blatant biases unlike other popular videos on the ssubject.
John Gauntner's books and website are extensive sources. Best yet is his Sake Professional Course. Lovely man and has inspired the growth of sake abroad. Good interview about his sake path.
Generally speaking Japanese have some sort of image that Unions are strongly bound to political parties such as Kyosan-To or Shamin-To, which makes the idea of joining Unions seem to be involving socially unacceptable activities. That actually is the case when it comes to traditional teachers unions such as Nikkyoso or Zenkyo. They have to take some sort of blame that has triggered terrible fishy perceptions toward Unions in Japan.
But how did julian move to japan on a long term basis in the first place?? What visa did he have?
This was very interesting and informative. Thank you for your work and effort in bringing these interesting geusts on to talk about japan and what they do there.
Excellent and engaging overview. Required viewing for anyone vaguely interested in learning more about sake.
John, a perfect Podcast - thanks much - David
Julian the goat!
This was excellent. After randomly coming across Cathy 3 or 4 years ago it answered many questions I had. I also came across Unpacking Japan for the first time so will be digging into your content.
Cathy have a pleasant voice and it's a great story of hard working of make her dreams come true. Thanks for the Interview.
Too many cooks in the kitchen, too many players on the field 🙄 tell me about it
Super interview. Nadja is gutsy, charming and passionate about working. At 70, I just started learning Japanese cooking. So this was very inspiring. So far I can make tempura, gyoza and tonjiru - all amateur style. I get basic ingredients from Japan thru friends visiting Japan as tourists. India is seeing the beginning of Japanese food. I used TH-cam to learn and am grateful for that. Kaiseki is for my next life. The next project is Nigiri sushi but I need to source sushi quality fish which seems impossible in india. Wonder where Nadja works? Has she opened a restaurant?
Thank you both for the great interview! I'm now a fan of Heidi and Mermal! <3 The interview had a wonderful calm energy and was really fun to listen to!
LOL
the interviews are too long, today's people have no patience to watch
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thanks Heidi. This is a pretty cool channel. (Subscribed)
Thanks for watching!!
Been seeing your instagram posts lately. I will start from the beginning to see how the podcasts are.
We've come a long way!
日本の不動産業界はものすごく古い商習慣で固まっているようですね。でもそのことが素性の悪い外国人に買い漁られることから防ぐセーフガードになってるのかも。
welcome to the liar's den a place where everyone pretends they dont know the truth and speak about anything EXCEPT the truth cause admitting the truth would ruin the bubble of delusional they've all created collectively truth is.. its all about s*ex~ and the younger and skinnier you are.. the s*exier you are.. peace
Japan didn't go to open the gate for mass immigration, thinking that would solve their population decline.

One of the most interesting podcasts from you!
Wonderful video! Thank you for this wonderful channel.
My God, can some people really be so selfish as to expect to actually take the holidays they were promised? Tsk, tsk.
Thank you for this video. I found it very interesting.
Excellent information, thank you! Dennis' story and attitude is an excellent example to others, in and out of Japan.
The OG Dennis 🙏
Kudos to Dennis for doing the hard work.
Fantastic interview Toby!
hey, it's your flashy fashion reporter Cathycat
Thank you Toby for this podcast. I am usually interested in entrepreneurs' life in Japan but getting outside of an echo chamber is healthy. Helping people take their holidays and know their rights is a healthy fight, but I hope it does not get too far on the left thus re-creating exactly what many of the immigrants escaped from, in Japan. I extend my respects for Dennis and his courage to maintain a happy attitude despite health challenges. Well done again Toby for rotating the interview before it ended to that side of his experience. Greet interviewing skills !
After making a union, he got fired, so he decides rather than return home to Canada, that he would stay in Osaka and fight it out!!! Now, THIS is a man whose moral compass is perfect!!!!
Someone at work sent me the video, what a great surprise David, saludos
I've been aware of Japanese idol culture for about 6 years now, but I did not learn this tidbit until this year. The term "graduation" and the idol love ban has a history that's over a century old and comes from a bizarre motivation. Namely, a train executive back in 1913 wanted more people to be taking his trains to his terminal station in Takarazuka outside of Osaka. And so he started a woman-only musical theater company called the Takarazuka Revue. The problem was that women were not legally allowed to act on public stages at the time, and so all the members were formally attending a university for the arts. They would have to "graduate" if they got married or otherwise exited the company even if it took decades for some of the more popular performers to do so. Johnny of the Johnny's Agency adopted many of the same rules, terms and monetization ideas from the Revue for his boy groups starting in the 60s which were then in turn adopted by Morning Masume and AKB48 etc. Unfortunately, I doubt there are many if any non-Japanese who are into that scene even as fans, but I would be fascinating to see you interview someone who was.
oh is that actually where that comes from, wild 👀 -editor
Saludos David! Thanks for sharing!
Scrolling throught the sections and seeing "Watergate" I'm like wtf is that and realize it is maybe a misspelling of Wotagei
Fixed!! Thank you for catching that <3
