I find this video really interesting because for me it has confirmed quite a bit of suspicions I had about Japanese comedy. I've been dipping my toes into Japanese comedy and watched a lot of Talk Survivor and the old Gaki No Tsukai Batsu games. But only by watching Documental, even though it's a completly different environment from regular japanese comedy, andnhearing the stories in Talk Survivor did I realise and understand how damn harsh that landscape really is as a Business. It seems very structured, industrialised and formulaic to me. There's definitely some characters that I like and find really funny but I don't think I can really warm up to Manzai as someone who grew up with German standup comedy. Thanks for making this video and making other cultures more accessible!
thanks a lottt niisan!! for being so kind..you’re a genuine dude man ❤, even if you don’t wanna be a dude, i just know that you’re an awesome human being. Thanks for the insights, it helps understand better. love your perspective 🔥Respect man 🙌
I follow Nick on instagram, and also his youTube channel. As a Japanese who grew up in the states and enjoy both Japanese and American comedies, I loved listening to Nick's experience and take on comedy style and it's very convincing for me. Nick ain't a "dumb guy", he can act that way from being in a Manzai duo.
As a Chinese guy who doesn't speak Japanese at all, when Nick says God-Tongue here, it reminds me back in the days when I was enjoying the whole series of 芸人マジ歌選手権 back and fourth with Chinese subs since high school age, I can still remember the whole fucking song of Jetasy (JET ECSTASY) by 後藤輝基.
Nick, you speakJapanese fluently in your channel, but this time I though you couldn't find the right English words. That's happyens when you are speaking Japanese all the time.
Why is it way harder to understand English of the guy on the left than Nick, and also I think it is weird this guy has thick accents but speaks more fluently than Nick lol
Imagine being so afraid of the industry that you work in to avoid using any names even of people who have been good to you. imagine being so repressed and concerned aboout what you say.... i am sorry but i do not take anything he has to say as his true feelings. he is heavily self-censuring. what i took away is that comedy is terribe industry that is run like a very traditional and backward conservative japanese company. sorry nick but you only made me more certain that japanese "comedy" is a coporate control, exploitative industry not a true art form. art is free not restricted.
I was trying to be semi-fair to Japan. I don’t have any sponsors and don’t care about being fired from my company in the slightest. I didn’t name names, not because I was worried, but because I didn’t want to name-drop and sound like I was bragging. Also, I’ve asked geinin in the past whether they see comedy as an art, and they’d laugh, saying it’s cringy to even consider it that. Unlike stand-up comics in the West, they don’t view it as an art form. If you’re just looking for someone to bash Japan, you won’t find that here. There’s plenty of that all over the internet.
Really interesting, thanks!
I really enjoyed this excellent interview. Thank you. :-)
Love this one! Please make it a sequence.
NIck, you make really honest comment. I love it! Thanks.
yo, what up it's Nick,

Thanks for video. Really interesting
Wow. I went to Sophia with him. I don't think we really knew each other but I remember him.
49:00 Japan doesn't even have 4 seasons when you count the 梅雨 season and the 台風 season.
In 41:24 if you are wondering
I use this video as a tool for immersion because the content is interesting and Nick speaks natural American English.
What was the comedy duo Nick mentioned towards the end? I couldn't quite understand what he said
Knights
I've seen a video of Lenny Bruce had his partner doing the manzai type show a long time ago.

Your a great parson. We don't need

He sounds german.
Poor guy. He seems trapped.
