  • Out collecting firewood in the woods today. I cut up, split and stacked some of a red oak tree that I cut down last year. After cutting wood with the Husqvarna 455 Rancher, it was loaded on the Kubota L3901 and hauled back up to the Wolfe Ridge Pro 28c compact commercial log splitter.

Phil do you use a battery tender on your tractor battery? I use one on mine and I think it really helps. I’ve been thinking my battery was toast for a couple years but it keeps cranking. Sometimes seems sluggish the first start but that’s pretty normal with diesels. Cranks right up after that all day.

My tractor battery is older than your tractor! Mine was weak last winter, but then when I started running the tractor hard in summer it was fine and has stayed fine. I concluded I wasn’t running long enough with my winter chores to charge it. So now I run the tractor longer (at least half hour if I start it) and it’s been holding so far this year. Cold starts with glow plugs are a big power drain.

I notice that too, letting it run is good for it. I figured after 4 years of letting it sit out in the winter and sometimes doesn't get run for a couple weeks the batter is just toast, but I might try a trickle charger to see if that keeps it going a while longer before replacement becomes necessary.

It’s always good to get into the woods. There is something about it that is relaxing. Keep up the good work!
