Wow, I cannot believe I found this video. I started working for Ramtek in 1981 and was there 14 years. I started in sales/bus dev in New England, but ended up being the last sales guy standing before the company folded and my turf by then was the whole USA. At our high point we were over 400 people strong. I knew about the previous games background, but only vaguely frankly, by then we were focused on raster graphics systems and my focus was on mil/areo, Navy, and related type customers and some medical imaging, CAD, etc. The PC technology killed the company, they did not make the necessary changes, like many other companies like DEC, Data General, Wang, etc. Working for Ramtek changed my life and career (still working) and I will never forget or regret it. I knew Chuck and he was fun to be around on business travel. Thanks for this very cool video.
Awesome, thanks for providing additional context!
Just been reading about the story of Taito, I think it would make a great Biographic movie, switching between the stories of Michael Kogan the Ukrainian refugee business man struggling to start businesses in China And Japan, and Tomohiro Nishikado, the ambitious Engineer struggling to find a place to use his talents and be appreciated. It could split time between each of them's personal and professional struggles, peaking with the release and success of Space Invaders.
There's a lot of industry history that's super wild and would make a great story.
13:18 I see what you did there, nice one ;)
51:35 Whats a palladin? ...sorry, could not resist... I guess some TH-cam viewers know why I asked that question ;)... Thanks for the your walkthrough/review of the Ultima series... great trip down memory lane :)
WE HAD A COPY IN 1970 AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO We went wild innovating enhancements. Things like an orbiting planet, retro rockets for rotation, main thrusters, a deployable satellite, missile trajectory prediction, and various enhancements. One of the most sophisticated strategies was to rendezvous with the planet, establish a high orbit, deploy a satellite, then drop down to a lower orbit where you were sheltered. And this was years before Pong. 👁️ .
I absolutely loved deadline on my C64. This video is fantastic.
Thanks!
Thank you for the info and the video! I had a look at both the mame emulation of Galaxy Game and a seperate Windows simulation of Computer Space. What I didn't find out so far - the mame version of Galaxy Game is completely silent without any sounds. But is that how the original installation at Stanford university worked, too? Or is mame just not able to recreate the original sounds? I looked around a bit and didn't find a definitive answer to that question so far.
I can't say for certain but my guess is that these early hardware setups didn't have audio. Many of them didn't even have monitors.
@@MichaelCoorlim Yes, you're right. Certainly it would make sense Galaxy Game didn't have any sounds yet, considering the early stage of development back then. Yet Computer Space actually does have sound in the current simulations I tried, typical early arcade laser and explosion sounds you'd expect.
I never used to have much interest in most early arcade games beyond a historical curiosity for the industry, even if Galaga was one of my first experiences with video games. Your attention to detail in this made me appreciate them more than before. Even the basics deserve to be observed or even enjoyed from an artistic standpoint. By the way, Galaga still holds up. Super fun if you're in the right mood.
Just wanted to say that I absolutely love these videos, stuff like this and Deja Vu. It's really cool seeing these early games I either hadn't heard of or only had only seen the box art, and you do a good job of explaining the background and context of the games.
Enjoyed these. Any progress on Ultima V?
Did you ever play Ultima 9? The first (and possibly only) 3D version of the game, giving 3rd person perspective. I had a Windows machine by that time, with a 3D accelerator card (Voodoo 3dfx) and it barely ran on that. It seemed to overload any 3D card you threw at it. The more you had the more it used, until it was a choppy 10 FPS. But it was fun to play. This was about 1998 I think.
Ah yes, Ultima! I was a big AD&D player back in the 1980's, and this RPG filled the computer role nicely. I had a friend of mine, who bought an Apple IIe (copying me) so he could play it as well. To say he was obsessed with the game was an understatement. What Gary did was to map EVERY SQUARE on the World Map. He was jealous I got a cloth map, and he did not, so he was going to out do mine. He used graph paper, Starting in the center, and marked every fricking step, drawing what each of those squares showed in game. Grassland, mountain, cities, with foot notes where applicable. Placing a double digit number and alpha character. He did it all in colored pencil, and it looked fantastic. I was jealous. He succeeded. It was about 3 or 4 times the size as the cloth map. And he proudly displayed it on his kitchen wall over the table, much to his wife's chagrin.
what a wonderful game and atmosphere. thank you for featuring this.
I once role played as Kyle Reese, I was sent from the future and that's why I'm naked in the forest.

Hello
Holy SHIT. This is a fantastic video. This is exactly the kind of analysis I find so difficult to find.
Good stuff thanks for these vids!
Is there any app that allows me to play this or Ultima 5? The music of this game takes me back to Britannia. Still my favorite game of all time.
Gog.com has all the Ultimas and they play on modern machines via (legal) built in emulation, I believe.
For the last 40 years I thought George was the killer. Thank you for giving me closure on this mystery I could never quite solve as a kid.😎
I like the time limit. It creates a sense of urgency and a sense of earning a reward when you cure yourself of your maladies and you can proceed at your leisure. I like the moves based time limit instead of "finish before x day and every move counts as one hour" not knowing the exact time limit increases the tension. I know the devs put it in there because trial and error was part of the experience of games back then, but it does other things than just increase the difficulty. This was a cool game, but I wish they had done more world building to sell that it was set in 1941 than just a newspaper. They should have had references to the depression being in the past or Ace being a WW1 vet or something.
