The big difference between the P83 and the P85 is that the front piece on the P85 is made of chromed pot metal while the P83 is all steel. On my pre-serial badged Jazz Festival - see th-cam.com/video/mt6O2IdKXZA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TbRX12PBmHGYaJ7I - I have an early P83 with the letters “WFL” inside a keystone shape rather than the “Ludwig” in script. I have a script-lettered P83 on another drum and a later P83 with “ludwig” in the modern letters. I of course also have a pot metal P85 on a mid-70’s Acrolite, too. The black face on that P85 slide is actually a sticker, not black enamel. I wish it were enamel but it isn’t, and if anyone has proof positive that any of those blackface P85’s were black enamel, please reply.

Thank you sir! I spent a fruitless evening trying to figure out how it went back in. Turns out the problem was that the mainspring had kicked out of the notch so that the breech block would not lower enough to extract or feed a cartridge on a .32 Long.

Bruce, another beautiful job on a beautiful drum! I love watching your videos with a cup of good coffee in the morning. I wish you would have included the clean up of the the COB hoops even though you have shown it in other videos. I've restored a bunch of old drums over the years and generally they turned out very nice. I've always cleaned or replaced the mounting screws and now I regret it--I should have done it your way. That is a really beautiful Camco drum...and also, apparently, an unloved Camco drum. A loved drum gets played...and that drum was very rarely played. The previous owner may have kept it well...but didn't play it. Hopefully, now that you have breathed some new life into it, someone will love it and play it like it was made to be played.

Wow! That's one beautiful drum now, I've been more and more curious about CAMCO drum's recently, I'd heard about them years back but never really took notice. I'm taking notice now, after watching a few of your videos I'm becoming more interested in the quality, which is obviously very high and considering the other manufacturers of the day, they appear on another level. It's like when Premier drums made their chrome over aluminium shell's, they were made flawlessly and lasted really well, something other manufacturers didn't really master. Thanks for the brilliant video.

@@vintagedrumrestorationgara91 my pleasure, yes there's a channel on YT based on Germany, there's a guy occasionally comes up with vintage drums and he's posted a couple on CAMCO, an Aristocrat and a COB of the same variety, he's had problems getting the throw off back to working order, but managed it with the help of his dad, that was the wooden one, which he said retails at 5000 Euro's!! So yes definitely valuable drum's to own and very obviously high quality at that. I've been looking on eBay as my contacts, outside of retail like Rusty drums' is pretty much limited, I see there's a couple of Tuxedo snare drums on eBay, which look great. I'll probably need to save up even for one of that kind! Thanks again for the work you do and presenting it to us viewers.

I would take either of the two Eddie Knight drums. I took lessons from Eddie when I was younger. The first set I ever played was the gold moire set that was in his studio. Thank you for the shout out to Eddie. He was a great guy. He played my wedding. and my mm's prom. Eddie passed in August of 2021. He is dearly missed by his friends and students, which I am proud to say, I was both. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of all drum brands, but he was a Camco expert. He was close friends with George and Elsie Way and had a lot of George's stuff. His collection was museum quality. Your video made me very nostalgic. Thank you for the memories.

Thanks for sharing, you helped me figure out how to clamp my 12" tom that gas a similar crack like that last one you did. It was from a drop when I just had got the kit. I remember that I searched for any damages and couldn't find any at first. Only much later, when I was disassembling the drum for an overhaul, I found the crack and the reason why that particular tom was giving me such a hard time to tune...! Well, you live, you learn...

The throw off handle on the p85 looks a little longer than the p83. I have a old WFL snare drum with the p83. It needs the correct throw off handle. Mine is straight and doesn't have a bend in it to accommodate the head hoop sticking out into it. My drum is 5.5" tall and I think maybe someone swapped a strainer from a 6.5" tall drum, maybe? However I need to buy just a handle and i would give this one in return, as well. Any recommendations on a good source for one? I need it because it is binding badly from having gotten bent over the years from that poor clearance of the head hoop

Beautiful drum set, very nice indeed, they'd cost an arm and leg over here in the UK, so I'm playing more modern drums. A Drum Craft maple 7 piece including 14x6.5" snare. It's a great set... not that vintage Ludwig or Gretsch sound but still very nice indeed. I also own a couple of other sets, a MIJ Pearl GLX and MIJ DX Professional, in Cherry Wood stain with lacquered shells, interiors lacquered as well, it's another amazing sounding set, has 45° cut bearing edges so really let's you take it easy and get familiar with finger grip techniques. This is an amazing channel, I love your approach to restoring these old classics, it's great to watch and reassuring in a way, what with all of the cancel culture and everything being disposable, your atypical capitalism gone wrong model.
