Thanks for the dimension of the length of wire. I'll be doing this soon on a neglected set of school chimes. A buddy restored a set and built a jig with an old drill to be able to turn the tubes to clean, polish and finish them. Made for a very nice presentation. When closing ferrules (I don't have the proper tool either), I use an auto body panel dolly as an anvil and hammer the ferrule to crimp it. It would be best to refer to the amount of overlap, but you've saved me some trial and error, for sure. Stay cool.
