I love Olivia Newton John! I did Xanadu Jr. and fell in love with Suspended in time the first time I saw it. Finally, I got to perform it on stage this weekend and it was so magical. It’s such a soft, delicate, and magical song that I’m so blessed to be able to sing. ❤

I always say Fantasia should play Dinah Washington in a movie. Fantasia's talent has been overlooked. She has proven herself to be an all-around entertainer. A lot of the legends like Patti LaBelle, the late Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Babyface and so many others have all praised Fantasia. Check out her performance in the Broadway musical After Midnight. The show was set in the 1920's and 30's Jazz age th-cam.com/video/hjFwby-J_ZE/w-d-xo.html

Her lines and the quality of her voice remind me of Charlie Parker's alto sax. She and the Bird, along with Dizzy Gillespie and Max Roach made ensemble in the early 50's and late 40's.

The greatest singer of all time IMHO. BTW, regarding the nickname "Sassy." In her early career she spent much of her time on the road with Earl Hines' and then Billy Eckstine's bands. Usually, she was the only woman. She dealt with it by becoming "one of the guys." Although she was always very ladylike on stage, when hanging out with the guys she could drink, smoke, and swear with the best of them! And didn't take any stuff from anybody. Hence, "Sass." I love your speech at the end about the quality of singers from that time compared with too many of today's "talent." And your recognition of the skills of The Divine One.

I love that Nancy Wilson could sing almost anything but I never thought of her as a jazz singer. To me she was singing popular ballads, blues, jazz with Shearing and Cannonball, and I thought she had a great 70s soul sound, which for me was high school. Favorite album All in Love is Fair. And She could sing country, listen to her Ode to Billy Joe. Thanks for honoring Miss Wilson. She was phenomenal and really nice to her fans. Diahann Carroll to me was a great musical theater singer. Loved her too but not like Nancy ❤

I found it a beautiful coincidence as they’re singing the words “if you fall I will catch you,” as Patti is holding her hand and helping Cyndi off the piano and walking down the stage. 🫶🏽🤗 demonstrating support and friendship while singing about support and friendship. beautiful duet. And that “the second the second the second,”ad-lib was just spontaneous genius 👌🏽

And thanks for mentioning the Natalie Cole rendition. VERY similar to Nancy's. Nancy's arrangement was by Gerald Wilson (no relation). Gerald became the arranger for the legendary Jimmie Lunceford band at age 21. My dad played in dozens of big bands as a pick-up reed man in the 1930's. Lunceford band was his favorite. Dad worked out of the Boston musicians union. My dad said nearly every big band member carried Jimmie Lunceford records on the road. If you are not familiar with Lunceford's band. I'm sure you'd appreciate them. They were the band every band TRIED to match. Few did. Lunceford died very young.

Actually they debuted this song a couple of weeks earlier on The Hollywood Palace variety show. Diana Ross was the host and Sammy Davis Jr was the feature guest with the debut of the J5 as the special treat; Ross was designated as the person who discovered them (although it really was Bobby Taylor). That performance is on TH-cam also; you should review that one as it’s truly their very first appearance on national television (Ed Sullivan was their second). And what’s funny is that they performed a medley there as well, and their first two songs were live, but I WANT YOU BACK was definitely lip synched. And the those first two songs were different than the ones they did on Ed Sullivan. The interplay between Michael and Diana Ross is amazing as well. You should check it out!
