    I agree about Karen....her voice was always so warm and comforting....it's like she was hugging you. And Richard was a genius arranger.

      Richard gets way too little mention. He was a brilliant musician and his talent as an ARRANGER of the music he did to showcase Karen's voice was unparalleled!

    She comes from an era when there were mostly no visuals at all. It was just her smooth, calm, and beautiful voice lulling you to sleep on late-night middle-of-the-road (MOR) radio. I miss those days when there were MOR AM radio stations without continuous talk 24/7.

    There is no question Richard was the brainchild behind the treatments he gave to the Carpenters impressive list of hit records. Though he was not the composures of Close To You, RD&M, , We've Only Just begun and Superstar. His interpretations are the standard for which others are judged. Karen Carpenter is the greatest female vocalist of the last 60 years (imho) and a world class drummer to boot. Your impressive dissertation setting up the song and your comments throughout the video were thorough and thoughtful. I thank you for that. Have a Happy New Year, RNB

    Merry Christmas Dylan. Im on my late 60s, so remember KC very well on the radio and TV specials. She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Richard,her brother, was a terrific arranger but KC's voice was discovered at age 19 by Herb Alpert in 1969 which began their road to fame. Richard convinced her that her best singing voice was contralto, 'the money is in the basement'. I believe KC's, voice, especially contralto, was the best female voice ever. No auto-tune, stripping, gimmicks, or screaming. Her nickname was 'one take', since she always sang a song once in studio without a single re-take. She sang to you with mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice compelled you to listen. She had no professional voice training. Paul McCartney said she sang Ticket To Ride better than the Beatles, and "she had the most angelic voice I have ever heard". John Lennon told her at an LA restaurant "you have a fabulous voice luv". Every female harmony in nearly all of her songs was hers as well, sang, then dubbed into the song by Richard. They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she received 4 grammys. She was also recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. She never knew true love, nor how good she really was. Check the songs in their Christmas Album (best Ave Maria, ever) and other songs such as 'Superstar' 'Solitaire', 'Only Yesterday', 'A Place To Hideaway', 'I Can Dream Cant I', 'Someday', 'Hurting Each Other', 'I Need To Be In Love', 'Goodbye To Love', etc.. She had a few friends including Petula Clark and Dionne Warwick. She had serious onset of anorexia in 1975 that continued the rest of her life. Married a guy in 1982 that was broke, not who she thought, and mistreated her. Never knew true love. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia. [Some info contained herein came from documentaries such as, "Only Yesterday]"

    Loved your commentary. I think the best pop artists have background in classical music. In other words, they know MUSIC, and what has stood the test of time. Richard was a classical musician and studied it. His arrangements are masterpiece and he knows so well how to use ALL the instruments. Karen? Her voice was an instrument. Pure, perfect pitch, organic, no gadget sounds or vocal gimmicks. She sang like she was breathing. My favorite group of all time.

    Hey there, I just want to thank you for listening to The Carpenters, and I also wanted to let you know that amongst the giants in the recording industry Karen carpenter voice was greatly admired by several legendary performers and recording artist. she was a singers singer. Artist from John Lennon, Paul McCartney , Elton John, Madonna, Dionne Warwick , Shania Twain, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, and many more.... These are some of the quotes from a fe of those I listed. Paul Mcartney, " THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF OUR LIFE TIME" , Barbara Streisand- Her voice was a formidable instrument" Madonna recorded a song , called "Rain " as a tribute to her, Frank Sinatra I guess was quoted as saying she was "THE ONLY FEMALE ARTIS HE WOULD PAY TO SEE". I you don't believe me go check it out for yourself. Do your research you will find that what I say to you is the truth. Crazy thing is Karen Carpenter , on some level never felt she was good enough.

    Karen died at the tender age of 32 of heart failure from chronic Anorexia Nervosa. She developed Anorexia after being called her brother, Richard's, cute, chubby sister. She never recovered from that quip. It led to life-long depression and horrible body image issues. At the end of her life, she got down to about 80 lbs. She was hospitalized more than once and finally on the road to recovery, but, alas, her poor body was too stressed and exhausted and she suffered a fatal heart attack while at her parents home just shy of her 33rd birthday (March 2nd). Her sudden death was a shattering loss to the world. There hasn't been - nor will there ever be a singer that rivals her. She was also an incredible drummer. She preferred to be known as a drummer that sings. Richard was one of the most brilliant keyboardist, pianist and arrangers of all time who used the layering of their vocals (ONLY Karen and Richard's vocals) to create the wall of sound harmonies. He also brought in an electric guitar to one of their ballads (Goodbye to Love). They took major heat for that - but it turned out to be absolutely fantastic and replicated from then on. They NEVER used - or needed - Autotune. She had perfect pitch. Her voice, combined with Richard's arrangements, were transportive. Her voice, though, should have been dubbed the eighth wonder of the world. It is absolutely impossible to pick a greatest Carpenter's song. They were ALL just amazing. (BTW, they were the CARPENTERS - not THE Carpenters).

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Mickibowers. Two things. First, neither Karen had nor Richard Carpenter has perfect pitch. Karen had and Richard has relative pitch in which someone can accurately identify a played first musical note after hearing a second played reference note. Second, it was not a writer's comment that Karen was "chubby" that caused her to develop anorexia nervosa and later bulimia. It was rather, her domineering mother who hero- worshiped her son and viewed him as a musical genius phenom but alternately viewed or treated her daughter as no talent, second class citizen was the primary reason that Karen developed her mental illness! Karen felt unloved by her mother. And her brother forcing her out from behind her drum kit for concert performances to front the Carpenters' band didn't help her situation either because Karen was at her happiest playing the drums!

    Thanks for the video. My personal favorite from the duo. It was not cool when I started high school in 1970 to like the Carpenters. But that I did. And over 50 years later those songs still speak to me. I agree that Richard learned from the song writing greats like Bacharach/David, Williams/Nichols and made the sound their own. But oh that voice! Paul McCartney said of Karen: “ the best female voice in the world: melodic, tuneful and distinctive." That’s good enough for me. Some recommendations to react to are: “Goodbye to Love” (with a phenomenal guitar solo), “Ordinary Fool” (which was never released as a single) and “I Just Fall in Love Again” (Anne Murray made it a hit, but Carpenters recorded it first and it was never released as a single either). No offense to Anne, but Karen knocks it out of the park IMHO. Thanks again!

    Another wonderful reaction!
    I love the comparisons you give of Karen to other singers. I can really hear the Dinah Shore with a June Christy approach influence on Karen. Another similar singer with a June Christy approach that shares similarities with Karen is Keely Smith. The jazz singer that Karen sounds the most like to me is Irene Kral, see for example: th-cam.com/video/wlopkUAIfac/w-d-xo.html . I would love to hear your reaction to Irene Kral.
    Your introductory remarks about how music and arts in general were changing in the late '60s and early '70s with so much diversity of music styles is spot on and reminded of when I was in middle school in the early to mid '70s. At that time my favorite singers were Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Karen Carpenter, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Ray Charles, Lou Rawls, and Gladys Knight. I got a lot of guff from the other kids in school because Karen Carpenter was on my list, but I still love her singing to this day.

      I highly doubt it was lip synced, because most musicians that worked with them said Karen always stayed close to the record when she sung live. Richard always wanted there performances to never be too spontaneous or sway from the record so they heavily rehearsed.

    Richard didn't write their songs. He arranged and produced, sang back-uo and played piano. He also rewrote the music to fit Karen's voice and selected musical instruments required. After a song was recorded he and Karen would go back and layer on several vocal sound tracks for the background singers. It's just the two of them half a dozen times
