    Hey there, first of all AWESOME tutorial! Question: At 18:05 you said you like the player mobility on the air, but if I just want to allow player to rotate the bodey (not move any distance) I have to create another method for this instead call Move() there, right?

    One additional feature related to the camera is the ability to shift its focus slightly off-center in the direction your character is moving. This adjustment allows players to have a broader view of what lies ahead of the character on the screen. This practice is common in many games and serves to enhance readability, facilitate exploration, and provide players with more time to react to on-screen actions. This becomes particularly crucial with the introduction of a seamless delay like you added, this narrows your view toward the player's movement and highlights less important details behind the character.

    I use Unreal which doesnt support WebGL build (or at least not since 4.23) so I always went the download route, it did screw me on my very first jam, but I feel you mostly need to put extra work on the itch page presentation to make the game more appealing (my first gamejam was a single screenshot, a single sentence). As long as you can get the median amount of ratings you're generally ok, playing other games and leaving comments usually helps and hanging around on the jam discord server so people feel like taking the effort to download it. I think webgl is a double edge sword, it also bring more "lazy" players, who wants to play as many games as possible and might give up on the first failure and play only 30 sec of your game, give up and rate it badly. I finished 3rd out of 412 entries in Vimjam2 and I had more votes than 1st, 2nd and 4th position. 33th (and 11th for Fun) out of 1050 for Brackey's 2022.2, with more votes that the 1st, 3rd, 4th and many of those above me. It's all about convincing players you are worth their time, which is obviously harder the bigger the jam is, so having a good presentation and making people want to give it a try will be worth in the long run.

    It looks great! Loving the style. My constructive criticism is I think the dash sound should be changed. Also feel like maybe the combat should be more snappy? The attack animations seems long and unclear as to where you are actually attacking. Seems like it might feel off since the rest of the movement looks so responsive. Idk though I obviously haven't played the game, just kinda what it seems like from the video

    I hadn't thought about adding custom shadows, that's really neat. It definitely sells the 2D look! I'm heavily invested in real-time 3D lighting for my project. It took a long time to tune the directional shadows to not be so sharp as to cause pixel creep and not be too soft as to break the toon aesthetic. But perhaps some baked lighting would be more stable.

      Yes! It is possible to do key rebinding with Unity’s New Input system. I may do a tutorial on this in the future, but if you search for Key Binding in Unity’s New Input system you should be able to find something.

      @@BitByteBit_ assets like footsteps of the player or the crosshair

    • @BitByteBit_
      @BitByteBit_ ปีที่แล้ว

      In this case I actually just modified the footstep sounds that come with horror engine in a separate program. The crosshair can be replaced by opening the component that contains the ui design. If you click on the current crosshairs you should be able to replace the default with a new one pretty easily.

    I think you should consider adding depth of field, though this may not be following your art style. Tunic, which is isometric, uses it really well to convey depth and I think it’s a very valuable option to consider.

    • @BitByteBit_
      @BitByteBit_ ปีที่แล้ว

      It is currently in the plan to add depth of field! I may do a video on that in the future. Thank you for the awesome feedback!

  • @owencmyk
    @owencmyk ปีที่แล้ว

    I would personally recommend adding an outline to the player, it would make the game look more 2D, and also improve readability. Also, suggestion for how you're processing outlines: You currently seem to be rendering them in your 3D pipeline. For a game like this you should instead render 4 copies of the objects silhouette and render them behind the original object, offset them by one pixel in each of the 4 cardinal directions. You might also be able to accomplish this with a screenspace shader instead if you want

    • @BitByteBit_
      @BitByteBit_ ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the recommendation! I have considered adding outlines to the characters, but haven’t thought about that method. I’ll definitely look into that! Thanks for the feedback!

    Hey love the look of the game! Have you looked into adding animation bleding between running and standing still?

    • @BitByteBit_
      @BitByteBit_ ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Originally I did have animation blending for idle walking and standing, but I was running into some weird issues when making the animations only have a certain number of frames so i decided to remove the blending. I may revisit it in the future though! Thanks for the feedback!

    Re: your smoothing camera. The problem with this approach is that the camera now lags behind the player meaning that the area you're most interested - the stuff ahead of you - gets less screen real estate. What you probably want to do is have the camera track *ahead* of player motion where possible, perhaps by adding some multiple of player velocity to the target camera position.

    • @BitByteBit_
      @BitByteBit_ ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve actually already been looking into this issue since it is especially noticeable when dashing! Thanks for the great feedback!

    As someone who has too many ideas floating in my head, i have to ask, how do you commit to something like this your first time? I'm stuck on this massive info gathering phase of figuring/learning this entire process.

    • @BitByteBit_
      @BitByteBit_ ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I have struggled with that for a long time and still do. I have random ideas pop into my head all the time that I want to work on. If you are still in the learning phase, it’s okay to focus more on learning instead of trying to create your idea right away. In the case of this project, my main motivation was I wanted to learn Unreal Engine, I wanted to make a horror game and I was a little burnt out on my other project and needed to work on something different. I think the key is to just pick one of the ideas you are really excited about and just start working on it. Make tasks to work on and see where it takes you. Most likely the project you set out to make won’t be the one you end with since things change as you test and experiment. In the end, if you are having fun and learning a lot it doesn’t matter what you work on first. I wish you the best of luck on your future projects!

    What's interesting to me: I know the aesthetics is not final yet. But somehow, i feel like humanity has made all those technological advancements throughout the years just for us to eventually make a game that looks EXACTLY like something from the late 90s to early 2000s era. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE pixel art. 3D pixel art is dope just as well! But if the game's aesthetics only improves a little from THAT, i mean... I just can't, ya know?

  • @aarushroy8571
    @aarushroy8571 ปีที่แล้ว

    the game looks so amazing. the art style reminds me of hyperlight drifter but the animations look more fluid and natural. a little critique from my side would be about the dash. The dash feels way too fluid in my opinion, the mechanics of it are great and well executed but visually it feels too smooth. For example the direction changing while dashing is instant, maybe a slight deacceleration before changing direction will help. also camera shake during figthing would help with the overall impact and visual feedback. Overall a very good job love how the game is looking cant wait to see more of it
