I always struggled to add muscle as a skinny/ectomorph body type or what ever you want to call it....
I've also struggled with being a bit skinny fat.
So here is my journey of fixing my skinny fat physique to building muscle naturally.
To fix skinny fat, I would avoid doing a bunch of cardio. If you do too much you're likely lose more muscle than body fat.
Instead, start with a recomposition.
I've helped over 100 men fix their skinny fat physiques, by losing the love handles, moobs & stubborn belly fat.
I wanted to make a video that is honest, to the point & no BS on how to lose body fat, whilst still gaining muscle without drugs or starving yourself.
I have provided a few FREE downloads here as guides to help you on your journey.

skinny fat myself... have started with strength and cardio mainly in zone 2 on alternate days, 3-3 days each of the week currently on day2, aiming for getting to 15% BF...
Sounds good bud! Pairing cardio with Strength is ideal! If you seem to see your muscle mass drop however, maybe dial back the cardio a little. Everyones different so you might get away with it!
Great video! I messaged you on Instagram!
Cheers mate, I’m glad you enjoyed it
I lost 4 stone but can never look lean ive changed my diet .figuring out right reps sets ect .k use to do more cardio but atm i do weights then last 20 mins ill do cardio.my body is just stubborn
It’s a whole process my dude! It will take time. If you’re working with stubborn body fat then make sure you’re tracking everything (calories, performance in the gym, progress Photos etc) stubborn normally means plateau so something might need changing
Gotta send this to people I know, they don't seem to understand such a simple thing - Love no nonsense approaches like this
Right? I have had this conversation 1000 times with friends & family’s lol
"No. He's actually quite ill" love it!
After going through many self transformative/ improvement methods which all failed to galvanise me, it was finally the old fashioned tried and tested by militaries all over the world, BOOTCAMP DISCILINE. I.e. get used to doing things you dont want to- e.g. getting up at 5.am to workout, exemplary tidiness and cleanliness , setting aside at keast 3 hours of enhancing reading per day and so on.
That’s awesome :) thanks for sharing
I wonder when that happens? I've lost 10kg over the last 3 months and I've gotten stronger, all my lifts at the gym have increased. I still don't feel like there's any point to life. I still work a job I hate. I don't feel any better about myself because I'm a little less fat and my shoulders are a little wider. Maybe I'll finally be happy if I lose 30 or 40 more kg, but I won't know til I get there.
Sounds like weight wasn’t an issue for you. It’s easy for me to say but what you hate is the job and you could try to find one you don’t hate or whatever that you can do to mitigate its effects on you mentally health
Thanks for Sharing here Derek! It will take time. It's a journey of up's & downs. For me it was about 1-2 years of seeing really good progress. Tbh if you factor in my failures at the start, we're talking about 6-7 years! But it's worth it. Sound's like you've been doing really well over the past few months, so keep pushing that to new levels! As for the job side of things... That's complicated. No one really likes their job, but that doesn't mean you should spend you life hating it. Do you have a job in mind you'd prefer?
Good advice
500 calorie deficit is called cutting .
💪
;)
Excellent advice explained clearly and logically. Thanks!
Really appreciate the feedback thank you! :)
Good info cheers!
Glad to hear it! 😊
get rid of that table salt
🤣 I purposely used that one to see if someone mentioned it
pretty much everything that did not work for me in a single video.
Right!? Everyone makes these mistakes. Most fitness info out there is surface level & doesn’t take into account the basic fundamentals that work
Matt looks like he just cut smaller muscles smaller body fat %
That was my thought he's still skinny fat
Muscle building is a long process, and it takes even longer if you are in a 500-calorie deficit; although it might look like he gained nothing if he was training and in a light calorie deficit only, he more than likely did put on at least some muscle, and at the very least he is at a good body fat percentage to start to a clean slow bulk so he can pack on some more muscle
Increase protein intake and do compound progressive overload exercises!!

🙌
So what about progressive overload? Would you suggest, say overloads for muscle group every alternate week or once - twice a month instead of each week? It’s so much tougher on a cut , like you said
Overload should be the focus of every workout pal 💪🏻 If you’re on a cut, then sure… on paper you might not be seeing crazy improvements. But if you’re pushing hard, you’ll be moving forward. Even if the weights & reps stay the same… if you’re lighter, then you’re improving your power to weight ratio 💪🏻😊
I really enjoyed this one 😂 Makes sense to me.
Hahah cheers Tereza! I hope you are well? :)
@Sam_Stanton I am well. Thanks. This year I am following the Johny on the right because the last two years it was the Mince pie Johny and it took me half a year to start repairing the damage. This year I still enjoy a mince pie but in moderation coming up to Christmas and I keep progressing so my glass is going down, slowly but down. So I get exactly what you mean by this. 😆
This is exactly what I was looking for? A skinny-fat started working out 2 months ago. Minor changes but still doesn't know where I will be after couple of months but yeah this is what I am following thankyou...I don't know will it work for me but I am always confused
I’m glad to hear it pal! It’s a unique struggle being skinny fat. But if things are done correctly you can end up with an incredible physique 👌🏻 best of luck pal! Let me know how you do 💪😊
I am skinny fat 178cm. I weighted 64kg in september. I used to be very thin with small belly. Now I weight 72kg after tracking calories, eating surplus and working out 3x week. I think I went a little too much calories (I gained like 1kg a week - mostly fat but calories too as I can still overload and get pr every week). Should I recomp now? I dont even know what weight should I target, i think my arms are still too small. Any advice?
Cheers for your comment mate! I guess the first question would be, do you have body fat on your body that you dislike right now ?
1kg per week is were you went wrong, you should gain 1-2kg per month max 2kg in my opinion. if you notice face fat, belly fat and you don't like that cut down slowly 250-500 calories below maintance, and make sure you get down to 10-14% bodyfat. that is atleast were i would want to be. if you don't think you have to much fat then bulk abit more so your muscle pop more when your lean, its your choice. if your body fat is over 20% i would cut down to be lean, then bulk.
Why from skinny-fat to fat? You do no good to yourself when piling up fat. No matter where - around arms, or chest - it's bad. It's better to cut and have problem: how to build muscles where you skinny
@@HCforLife1 Agreed
skinny fat is the worst
Right!? People don’t understand the struggle lol
I don’t know why youtube recommended this video, but I must admit that the idea you're describing here sounds legit and actually works pretty well. That’s how I trained too. I didn’t do any research, it just seemed logical and natural to me
Thank you Alex! 💪

hey bro i watched a few of ur videos on this same topic, the thing is im 5ft8 and i used to weigh 103kg this time last year im down to 65kg my lowest was 60kg but i was and still am skinny fat and even more unhappy with the way i look , i have some loose skin and not much muscle at all because i neglected my nutrion and gave up on the gym after 4 months when i first started and stuck to walking and a big deficit, could you give some advice on how to stay motivated when building muscle because i would like to cut down to maybe 55kg but build some muscle at the same time but i find it so hard to stay motivated now
Hey mate! I appreciate your comment. Getting down to 65kg is amazing pal! Well done. My best advice would be to have a simple weight training plan that you can stick to. Track it & increase the weight & or reps over time. There will need to be some form of improvement to ensure that your body changes over time. Motivation will come & go, so you gotta build momentum & discipline to show up even when you don’t feel like it.
😊😊

Learn from my mistakes to save yourself some time & frustration 1. Doing loads of cardio to lose fat… Cardio is great don’t get me wrong. But if you’re skinny fat & you do excessive cardio, you will lose muscle. Which is counter productive if you’re trying to lose fat & gain muscle. Add some cardio as extra, not the main plan. 2. Low calories… YES you need to be in a calorie deficit to lose body fat… BUT if your calories are too low (larger than 1,000+ deficit) You’ll increase the risk of going catabolic (Losing muscle tissue). Not only that, the lower your calories, the less energy, the less performance & the less recovery you’ll have. Which isn’t ideal if you’re trying to fix skinny fat. Aim for a healthier deficit (500). 3. Starting with a bulk… Now, if you’re just skinny, then yes! Start with that bulk mate… But if you’re skinny fat, starting with a bulk is only going to make those area’s you dislike (Belly, moobs, lower back etc) even worse! Not only that, but you’ll have an even bigger cut waiting for you at the end of it… no bueno. Start with a Recomposition to lose body fat but also gain a bit of muscle. THEN lean bulk from there… You’re future self with thank you! 4. Eating clean. Now don’t get me wrong “Clean food” is certainly the way to go. You’ll feel better & probably look better… BUT 1,000 calories in broccoli vs 1,000 calories from ice cream is the same unit of calories… it has nothing to do with the type of foods that you eat to lose fat. It’s the quantity of calories total. I’d rather have room for some biscoff biscuits & whiskey than only eating kale… 5. Lifting light weights for toning bro… Toning isn’t even a thing lol. But let’s think logically here… You’re eating less calories & lifting light weights… what do you think is going to happen to your muscle? It’s going to get smaller through adaptation. I’ve made this mistake twice 😅Lift heavy & controlled when you’re on a cutting phase. You’ll burn a bunch of calories AND you’re more likely to keep your hard earned gains. Hit follow for more no bs, honest help on fixing skinny fat 🫡
Useful advice, but how do I know if im skinny or skinny fat … does the fact I don’t know mean im regular skinny?
@@gameloser2893 It depends on what your goal is, if you have fat you'd like to lose, start there :) If you just want size & you're not fussed about body fat, train for size on a lean bulk :)
1 year of diet and gym no progress? nahh that guy just lied
I worked at the gym & saw it tbh mate hahah. Also I saw little to no progress in 6 years because my calories were off. Everyone responds differently
Cap
🧢
I can’t speak for everyone, but what I did is eat a shit ton of calories with plenty of protein , but also push myself at the gym really hard! As you fill out with muscle your body proportions change and the fat you had (still have) appears far more normal. It’s a lot more motivating than going straight on a cut.
Absolutely right mate! You were training hard enough & eating enough to grow 💪👌🏻
that haircut in the first picture 💀
That was a hair grow lol
more specific how?
In stead of following pre made generic plans & pre set meal plans. I trained specifically around my build, genetics & weak points. I worked out my calories & macros based on my starting point & tracked them. Some people can get away with basic plans. But it just didn’t cut it for me.

Yes 😂
He's vegan prolly why it took so long to gain muscle
I’m sure many people told you to eat more but you straight up couldn’t when the stomach is shrunken Though you didn’t really give a tip on how you increased your food capacity. For all the people reading carbonated beverages or if you need the calories just go with regular soda you’re welcome.
Very god point. I struggled massively with appetite. So I blended a 1,000 calorie shake made up of milk, oats, peanut butter, bananas & whey
Good video bro
Thank you 👊🏻
