Husqvarna Mower Backfiring: Part 2 WHAT WAS the cause?
This riding mower engine shoots flames out through the carb when starting. I found a couple problems by just looking at the engine. See if I can get this running without starting a fire. I replace one part and then adjusted another part. This was at a mower repair shop and the customer decided not to continue with repairs. so now, I get to check it out.
This video is a follow up to the first video. Here I check the valve settings. then I start and run the engine after repairs are made.

I just fixed a Craftsman with the same issue. One I worked on the bolts in the front actually came out
I think that sometimes the bolts don't get put back in, after someone had the trans out.
Bad gas 🤔
Great video! 👍 It looks like just a little bend on the arm is more than enough? I have two lawn tractors from the 90's with Briggs & Stratton engines with the same type of governor, one is 10 hp and the other one is 13 hp. Do you know what the rpm should be on these engines? One of my engines runs high enough but not the other one so i should check this out thanks to your video.
around 3600 is the max, a little lower is better, your connecting right will thank you.
kohler is slotted. briggs is phuck u
flywheel key
the repair shop told me they already checked that, thanks.
Business card does a good job!
The valve adjustment is the best thing to do in getting it up and running again correctly
Yes, it is not unusual for them to be out of adjustment. Also if they are too tight it can be a nightmare trying to get them running correctly.
@@ridingmowerking that is definitely the truth about that matter riding mower king 👑
Rmk can you do a vid of all of your mowers
Hi, I could however my mowers are always changing. I have a zero turn that lives here permanently and a Sears Suburban that does not want to leave. I could do a walk around type vid of those. Thanks for asking.
Ok
I would love to fix it
More power to you, I am not a fan of rust.
New viewer. Great video. I love making things work.
Thanks and welcome
My question is cause i have the same setup but those arms are abit Loose ow a little wobbly when moving the trottle back and forth between high and low would i need to replace that so it moves as smooth as yours or is there an adjustment that can tighten it back up so it works like new
The rod going to the carb may have a little rotational movement, but should not be sloppy loose in the holes on either end. There is also a spring around the rod to take out any play.
@ridingmowerking ok so pretty much much need new springs and the screw with the spring needs to adjusted and make sure all components are there.
That was the first problem I dealt with back in 2012 on a YTS4500. Cheap manufacturing processes using those self-tapping bolts was the issue. They loosen up or break in the cast aluminum transaxle. The fix is to drill the aluminum bolt holes straight through and use nut/bolt/lockwasher. The YTS is still in service today!
Angel iron will fix it 😊
Yes that is the best way, also remake a bracket for the front mounting of the trans.
That took a hard fall for sure 😢 Terrible news 😂
May have been dropped or fell off back of a truck or? Don’t look like something that would happen under normal use .
Ouch 😳 that looks strange thing to have happen to the transmission brackets
I have seen it before, usually when there is a bolt or two missing or loose. Good subject for a video I thought.
@@ridingmowerking glad you made this video on this matter riding mower king 👑
very good video. Thank you for you job.
Very useful video. Very well explained. Thabk you for your help. Regards
Thank, I hope it was a help for you.
I just picked up a YTA1946 Husqvarna from a neighbor and the BACK STORY was he went out to start it one morning and when he turned the key smoke came out from behind the dash. He put it out back and went into town and bought a new mower. So I asked him what he wanted for it and he told me to just come and get it. So I go there and I see oil everywhere and the top cover was sitting on top of the engine and all the bolts are missing...hmmm. Now I'm pretty sure I turned the engine by hand to make sure it wasn't seized and it was ok, or maybe I turned it just enough, now I'm not sure. I went back two days later to pick it up and we load it up and I take it home. After unloading it, I removed the hood to find it's covered in sludge by the dip stick tube and the tube is now lying beside the motor and the engine no longer turns more than a third of a turn in either direction and then you here the sound of a broken connecting rod. Now it WAS FREE so I'm out nothing, but now I need another 19HP engine. Oh well, Gotta love the back stories.
Also need to replace that cheap red screen filter with a real fuel filter. That's possibly how the surge problem started with dirt getting through.
Long fingernails
Tools
Good job btw
Thanks.
iuse a 5$ bill it is thicker tahn a $1 bill and works graet fro 51yrs
I hear ya, with all the emissions requirements, a 2 dollar bill is probably about what it should be.
Should be an RC 12 YC in a champion
MGK is a better plug by far
Champion plugs are absolute junk
You can also replace the terminals you can get a box of the terminals at your local NAPA Auto parts store and you don't need the boot to be on there or you can tell me some boot from an old set of plug wires
HI you are correct, but I was concerned that the insulation on the wire may have been damaged by heat too. And I had another coil to try.
Business card or your driver's license will also work that's about 12 South that's what bridge gives you in a coil
Briggs books has 12 Terrell s 12 so I said it's 12:00
G3003S12 I am doing this tomorrow , it should be fun.. maybe make a video haha
Did you get to replace the parts? How much trouble was it to get apart?
@@ridingmowerking parts were back ordered, next week.. it looks fairly straight forward. If you can change oil on a car or do brakes, it should be ok
Glad you are going to get it fixed and running again riding mower king 👑
Thanks, these types are a fun challenge
@@ridingmowerking you got that right riding mower king 👑
I think it's that crappy chinesium carb. Any time I've tried to use one I got a similar result - I could get it to run OK, but not nearly as good as the original. Always clean and rebuild the original carb if you can.
I bought one of those on Amazon for about $35 and it worked for a little while but I ended up getting an OEM for a lot more. Works better. I saw a video by Chickanic who does these too. She warned never to buy these on eBay or Amazon as the just don't work. I wish I had seen that video sooner. Oh well, you live you learn.
Check the shear key
That was checked by the repair shop.
Me too
Glad you got it running again riding mower king 👑
Thank you, Im happy that it seems good without taking the engine apart.
@@ridingmowerking glad you didn't have to go through this process of disassembly on this engine 👍👍
To chase the spark plug hole, just take an angle grinder and make a small cut at a diagonal on the end threads of an old spark plug. Thread in and out until the threads are chased like new. As for the engine hunting, the problem is due to the Chinese aftermarket carburetor - which I call a Chi-Nikki version. Many of these need the pilot jet to be enlarged which will provide additional fuel to alleviate the hunting. Sometimes other jets need to be enlarged but the normal culprit is the internal pilot jet.
Hi, that is a good idea about making a tap. The new carbs are made to run so lean that its hard to get a steady idle on some. So I will be addressing that issue also.
Are you sure it's a spark issue and not a carburetor problem?
Thanks for the comment, there is a carb issue, but I think the main problem could be intermittent spark. I will be working on the carb soon.
@@ridingmowerking Are you able to confirm intermittent spark? Inline spark tester? I just fought a backfire issue on my old JD.
Did not confirm with spark tester, but I have had plenty of carbs that would surge like crazy and still not backfire. I will be checking valve clearances too. But the bad plug wire was definitely suspect, and it was easy to swap in another that I had already.
I am Not an expert. What I know about small engines wouldn't fill a pamphlet. I did, however, find on a new carburetor pin holding the float had come partly out. Causing massive flooding and backfiring. Good Luck my friend.
Iv seen ppl use a card from a deck of cards
Need more practice with working with Camara placement, saw lots of shots of right elbow than shots of left hand, take lessons from Mustie 1, he has camera usage down so everyone can see what is going on
There's a bigger learning curve than you realize. The pros make it look easy. Some even have the luxury of a camera person.
@@ridingmowerkingyou are absolutely right. Mustie1 has been doing TH-cam for a long time. He’s quite good, no doubt. Great video though! I like your diagnosis and willingness to try out simple solutions. I’m sure you’ll get this Briggs running perfectly soon!
Thank you, I have posted a follow-up video for this mower.
@@ridingmowerking thanks! I’ll go watch it. I just subscribed too
@Kylebythecreek Thanks for hitting subscribe.
Or valves out of adjustment
My brothers did this not long ago, he had filled it up with diesel fuel. I was taking the carb off & smelled it.😊
Sounds like someone is having diarrhea while on a garbage disposal 😂
Fix timing.
Any piece of card stock will work from around the house like from a cereal box or frozen pizza box. It’s not really that critical as long as there’s an air gap. It’s a Briggs Intek single which isn’t exactly the pinnacle of modern engineering.
True, by this point briggs was specializing in de-engineering, like most of the industry.
piece of a cereal box will work- it is not that critical
You are correct, but when making a video, you want to try to put out technically correct info.
I've been using business cards go gap a coil for 50 years and never had a problem my friend.
Lolol set in seat and push brake down, then check valve lash and key way, bye
I've always found that a great design, plug/wire right next to the exhaust 🤔🙄
yes, always wondered why
Mine is a yth22v46 and i was parking it one day and it started to backfire
Anything can happen, I'm not finished with this one, it ia running a lot better, I think the burnt plug wire was most of the issue with mine.
Mine had a chewed wire
I have same mower and it backfires every time I cut it off, other than that it runs fine.
Could be that your antibackfire solenoid is gummed up. Try turning the key off at high speed. @@Scott-gx4rc
@@ridingmowerking Thank you will try that.
