Great Video , Many Thanks
I think communicting brightness of a light fixture using lux or footcandles would be more useful than using the exposure triangle. A single metric is easier to compare different lights. Further more, you need to take the light meter readings not just at the center of the beam, but also at the outter edge because even though the 1200D is 2/10 brighter at the center of the beam, but what about the overall volume of light?
@@raredreamfootage yes, good points. I simply use f stops day in and day out - so that’s what I think in. I did test the light across the beam in my own tests and maybe I should have added those tests to this as well. It under-performs badly across the beam as well. The point of this episode was more to point to the fact that you really need to understand what these modifiers are optimized for as it has a massive impact on effectiveness
great video! Such professional and comprehensive content is appreciated, keep it up! Thanks 😀
@@jaimecarsa thanks man
Busting the light meter out of a holster is a serious move. Love it.
@@GoodRebelEdits feel like a gun slinger 😆
@@dappergaffer The cinema swashbuckler. New channel name??
@@GoodRebelEdits 😆 yes!
Doing my own testing with the F10 and the 600 series lights, the only two lights it's really optimized for are the 600D and the 600X. For the 600C and the 1200D, you're far better off using the hyper-reflector set. The 600D with the F10 really heros on set.
How about 1200D using 15"Hyper reflector compare to 600D using F10 Full spot?
Loved the video! What's the faceted mirror you are using?
COB stands for "Chip on board" where the LEDs are a single large chip rather than individual diodes scattered in a pattern. Love the video and way to represent Rockford!
A COB light is still many individual LEDs in a pattern, just grouped tightly and bonded to the same thermal conducting PCB. Think about the diode patterns for full spectrum COBs, RGBWW, BLAIR-GC, RGBACL, etc.. Practically, the function of a COB light is to allow us to tightly pack LED's to effectively form a smaller source for the sake of shadow quality and enabling optical modifiers that become impractical as the source gets bigger, but they're definitely still multiple LEDs.
More importantly, a COB looks like one continuous source, whereas SMD's (i.e. Nanlite's FS series) creates discreet patterns, especially on multi color chips.
Andrew lock has a video that explains the same allegory. You can’t go wrong with old school Arri hmis. But I do love the compact trade offs of LED and color control.
CF12 is a much needed upgrade 🌟
@@AnotherCameraChannel I forgot they announced that! Do you know if it works well with the 1200d? From what I see it’s optimized for the 1200x and 1000c
@ I hear everything down the line before 600d is fine. 600D and 600C cob design isn’t bevelled or something so it’s not compatible. 1200d should be good. If I get to test it again I’ll try
Found the post: "Backwards compatible with: LS 1200d Pro LS 600c Pro LS 600c Pro II"
@ i’ll have to test it out
actually helpful
Both are quintessential light shaping equipment for any serious Gaffer.
Did you realize how inefficient the F10 is on the 1200?

I just discovered this light today so as a 60b II owner, what is the primary difference between the two? I've actually used the 60b II as a spotlight for a fashion show and i never felt like it was lacking. So im interested to see what the 60cr is doing more of.
@@o.f.ftrack3444 the 60CR is also full color. I believe the 60b II is a bi-color light correct?

7:18 new gaffer here. I disagreed re: apps, especially with the development of Sidus Link… until I needed more than a couple lights. That’s the top of the line manufacturers app, and it cant seem to handle 4 lights. 100xS, 60xS, and a PT4c worked fine. But once I added the 200xS, it started doing all your typical app BS (controlling the wrong head, or multiple heads, etc.) Any tips until I can afford a DMX setup?
If youre sticking with aputure get sidus one
If it is Spectrum C stand you're referring to at 2:40 in this clip then i must say it's not cheap as described. For most people, it works great and does exactly what it should but like you mentioned...your preference for other brands...
Wish the 240 version had that pop up softbox
Glad I found this channel
Thank you, Josiah! I recognized you from the many on set workshops from Shane’s site. Great stuff! Very valuable and humorous too. What I noticed is that you are very quick with changing the set-ups, which is super important on set. So wondering if you could share your knowledge how to quickly adjust c-stands (for instance more detail on where to place which hand when mounting a floppy or what to do with the knuckle so the flag slides into the hole right away, from which angle to insert the floppy, etc.) Basically how to get up to speed when setting up grip equipment. Thanks again, Matze
Hey @@JamonSerranoFilms, yes guilty as charged! That is me in Shane’s stuff. Filmmaker Academy is the best content for aspiring cinematographers you can get. Practice and familiarity certainly help with speed. Thanks for the feedback, we’ll consider C-stands part two 😁

'I 'm not gonna AndrewLocke this' 😂 The Aussie gets a reputation fir being thorough! What if you removed the factory diffusion and put a 4x or 2x3 like the studio setup?
@@gregzarkodimos9711 😂 I’m very glad he’s thorough. I think it’s certainly bright enough to diffuse with larger frames in some scenarios. But it is pretty directional without the diffuser, so I might be tempted to double break it. Put the half diffuser on the fixture itself maybe, and then push it through a larger frame
Thanks for this video. I wonder if it is possible to use Sirus Pro for Nanlite DMX control ? The LumenRadio CRMX is interesting. Can you get an user friendly iPad app for and control different light manufactures ?
@@amathma Sidus Link pro uses LumenRadio to control other manufacturers’ lights. Same with Blackout and Luminaire
@@dappergaffer awesome. Thanks for the reply.
What is the difference between x class and xr class?
@@يومياتمصورعراقي really the only difference is the addition of Lumen Radio. It is also the latest and current version. Also has a small engraving noting the center of gravity
If the orbiter had been three times the brightness it would still be relevant.
I tried out the skypanel X at arri on a test shoot for a feature, heres what i can say: -Its heavy. -The hyperoptics are impressive, i hate using the vortex naked, the shadows are just disgusting, the X i would absolutely use as a hard light, it also has crazy minimal spill coming of the lenses. However. It is NOT "as good as a fresnel fixture" but its close. -when using it as a soft light its not all that different from the vortex or even the old skypanel. -the new lightengine is great, amazing color -the crmx is very well done, even just the fact that it has legacy skypanel crmx profiles from the get go is awesome -its heavy.

@@wangkevin6258 thanks. I prefer the rigid form factor and incorporated Lumenradio of the PavoSlim line. Although the 240C is a more similar size to the F22c than the 120 is
Seriously the best c-stand tutorial on TH-cam. So many of the other videos are teaching people to use c-stands the wrong way or are leaving out key information. Your video cleared up so many questions for me! One question I do have is that in the video you mentioned that while c-stands often carry heavier loads than a light, they are not light stands. I'm curious about the other uses of c-stands beyond what you covered here.
Thanks for the feedback! Primarily, they're used for holding flags, diffusion, and scrims. But I find them to be extremely versatile - possibly my most-used item on set. You can help other departments too. Holding set pieces or props for art dept, a makeshift clothing rack for wardrobe, rigging things for cam dept or even cameras themselves, holding sound blankets for sound dept, etc.. A real beauty about C-stands is the ability to hold something in just about any position in space - which is infinitely useful.
Don't stop doing theses plzzz
Thanks! What would you like to see more of?
I for one would LOVE to see more comparison videos, especially in the LED range. Fiilex vs Aputure vs Nanlux and etc etc. these are great for us DP’s that are now having to deal with so many manufacturers and infinite choices
Fantastic explanation on C stands.
I believe it's called a Stinger after it's creator, Alfred R. Stinger. Pronounced stin-jer.
For realz?
In jail, you make a “stinger” by cutting the cord off an appliance. Then you can cook with the ends by contacting them to a metal surface. You get shocked a lot during all this, hence the term “stinger.” Jodi is another jail word, which the military share. It’s not uncommon for jail words to cross reference into other lexicons, or vice versa.
@@dymonmein this seems like a plausible origin 😁
Great video Josiah. I do think theres definitely a point where really big cables get wrapped over-under again and that is when they get to big to hold in one hand while wrapping them. having them lay on the floor and just putting loops over-under on top of it is much easier and faster then trying to wrap them over-over with a cable you can't easily just untangle with a little flick.
Thanks for the comment. In my experience - heavier cables are always over-over in the film industry. However, you are correct that they would be wrapped laying on the ground. All the way up to 2/0
IMO it does make sense to bag the second leg facing away from the load to counter balance as a secondary measure after placing the first big leg under the load (provided the bag doesn’t touch the ground). It also serves a secondary function to counter any force pushing over the stand at a diagonal 45 between the leg orientations. Curious if you’ve found the above to be less effective than bagging the first big leg?
It would be interesting to do some quantifiable foot-pound measurements to see if that secondary leg is any more helpful the a second bag on the long leg. Physics can be surprising
This was entertaining and informative. Please keep em coming.
If you stayed till the end - you get a gold star
