Sounds lovely running.
Cheers Mr Just!!
Nice! Before any fiddling with the carbs, I would set the thing as it will end up in the car. Air filters, fuel cell, fuel lines and pump. Then I would verify the timing. As the coolant runs around the intake, this system also has an effect on the carb tune. After all these major bits are in place and set up to run, then it's time for fine tuning. All the fine tuning, jets etc should be done under load and with AFR measuring device. This way you are able to catch too restrictive air filter system and other related problems before hitting the track with it, or building the car around inadequate system.
Wonderful sound!! How long can it safely run without coolant?
Sounds better in the flesh Brad! I don;'t really want to run for any longer than about a minute from cold... and given that I want to be starting and running it a lot (!), I will fit the cooling system asap!
@thebracketfactory i was a firefighter in Connecticut for 32 years. My first assignment as a probie was a 1957 85' American laFrance ladder truck. The truck was a year younger than me with about 20 thousand miles on it. Lol. That starter and startup sound are so familiar. I have a 1952 ALF I am restoring. I will keep my eyes peeled for spares for you. I'm replacing the V12 in my truck (thrown rod) sad. There are good parts on it. The distributors with good caps, rotors and points. If it will help your project I can pull them off.
I was expecting it to smoke like crazy, but it seems good. I wonder how much blow by you're getting in the rustier bores?
Not sure... I'm pretty sure I'll be down on power from 'new', but I don't think that'll be an issue in what I plan to build!
@thebracketfactory power will be fine I'm sure. It seems really healthy for something with rough timing and carb settings.
Sounds fantastic 😎😎
good isn't it... and I have plans to junk those big cast manifolds....
Good? it was excellent!! engine sounded spot on from the first spin, but I think you are wise in going for the cooling system next before you try to get the engine running perfectly! Perhaps try a seperate gravity tank for each carb, or even an SU electric pump if you have such an item? Number 9 looks interesting! Best wishes for Christmas and the new year! Phil
Cheers Phil! I does have a mechanical fuel pump (needs full re-build obviously!) and I do have an electric pump I could use... but it may be a bit small..!
she lives.!! cant you make a new rotor arm out of epoxy resin and some brass???. For example make a mold of the original then break open the broken original then you can copy the shape of the brass" half fill the mold put in the brass then fill the rest of the mold up ??????
she does...! Hurrah! Yes, making a new one is deffo an option... may also try to repair that one. Other options are to 3d print one (around a hand made armature) and modify the Seagrave ones... but first the cooling system!
That is fantastic progress! I think the main problem here is down to carburation is was spitting back on start up which indicates weak mixture, but it was cold, the first run sounded very mechanically quiet considering there was no coolant. You had a really good gift with those 2 distributors from USA, the caps are the first thing to have tracking down problems with old caps. In all you are on the right road here! Good luck with this project, and have a good Christmas break! Chris B.
Cheers Chris B! yes, keen to get some heat in everything before I start experimenting.. and those caps were a fantastic Christmas present!
Well done a great project for the new year 👍🎄
Cheers Alan !
well done sounds fantastic
Thanks Fred.
There is a youtuber named Jonathan W who, 4 years ago, posted some videos about getting a La France engine started. Jonathan is in North Carolina in the USA & is a very resourceful & ingenious man who I thought might be a useful resource for you.
Cheers Keith, I found him a while ago. It was watching his start up that inspired me to make the throttle linkage!
Thanks Chris for taking the time to quietly explain what you did and how you did it, I have been watching this from the beginning and am impressed by your tenacity and ability to make really good brackets.. but then I guess it's all in the name! Keep it up in 2025!
haha, thanks Mr Boat! I do love a good bracket... and there will be MANY more to come!
Great to hear it running. Basically it was a pile of junk when I first saw it . Lots of hard work and what a difference. She sounds sweet. Well done mate.
Cheers, thanks for the support.
Sweet sounding engine, definitely worth the effort. Just needs progression jets sorting 😎😎
yes, really keen to do more runs but will get that cooling system on now... glad I have supportive neighbours!
Fantastic step/achievement, the engine sounds sweet. Incredible find/donation from Chas.
yes, amazingly generous! The guy is a legend.
Briliant! 😀
Cheers Hans!
❤❤ brilliant ❤❤merry Christmas 🤶
merry Christmas Dennis!
Fantastic to see your success with the engine so far . Merry Christmas
Cheers Andrew, and Merry Christmas to you too!
Yes,yes, yes, thanks for this fantastic Christmas video !
It was a pleasure Hans!
What a brilliant “start” to Christmas! Great to see it running Chris I’m so happy for you! Happy Christmas 👍🏻
Cheers Gavin, happy Christmas!
Lovely video for Christmas morning with a cuppa & sausage roll.
haha, can't beat a sausage roll for breaky on Christmas day!
Great to see it start and have oil pressure, always a concern with ancient engines, fuel balance between carbs is always a struggle, vacuum gauge is a very useful tool,I’ve used a water butt before now to test run engines, just needs a outlet and run return pipe in the top, holds plenty of water, have used 5 gallon oil drums when they were made of steel, anybody remember those, lol, keep the faith fella,
Cheers Brett - yes, may go down the water butt route yet... but I do have rad. It's quite big by my usual standards... but may not be big enough for this beast!
Outstanding...congratulations you. May you and Mrs Bracket have a very merry christmas...see you in the new year
Mr Christmas to you too!
Brilliant 👍 Thanks for sharing this! Sounds very promising 😮!
fuck yeah man, sounds awesome, look forward to seeing it in a frame ...fair play Chas !! happy christmas bro
Cheers dude.... here's to more shenanigans in 2025!
Absolutely fantastic Christmas broadcast!!! Engine sounds strong and healthy from here, delighted for you Chris. Nollaig Shona Duit 🎅🏼
sounds Ok doesn't it.. Deffo down on power from 'new' but should still be 'plenty' ;-)
Phenomenal, well done.
Thanks!!
Well done all that attention to detail has paid off in spades......merry Christmas
Cheers Warren - Merry Christmas.
The old gal drinks like a v12. Well done.
I reckon it did about a pint in about 1 minute of running !! haha!
That is a wonderful Christmas gift for you! I want to wish you, your families and subscribers a very Merry Christmas.
Cheers Keith. Merry Christmas and I hope you have great day.
Really pleased to hear it run, it started so quickly given the years that it's been stored. Thorough preparation paid off there...
Cheers Ian - quite happy with that!
Congratulations on getting it running great to hear . happy Christmas and looking forward to seeing the project development in the new year
A great reward for all your patience and effort. She sounds wonderful. I notice you haven't named the engine yet. You'll do well to beat Bing Crossley! Merry Christmas.
What a great watch; felt quite emotional when that engine fired. I'm learning and enjoying all this so much; have a great Christmas and New Year Chris!
Yay !! Elle va ! Well done Chris , It did well to start as it looked pretty nippy there, good luck with the box of tricks next.... and another twenty feet of workshop needed soon??. or I would be happy to look after the Lola for you 😄😄😄 Happy Christmas to you and all the guys watching.
Well this was a nice surprise for Christmas day thank you very much, sounding sweet and yes fuel starvation were my thoughts also, what sort of pump do these normally have, electric one with a regulator will do for now. Nice score on those distributors and like someone else said get a couple ov rotors 3D printed
hello from Belgium, your videos are very well explained and interesting. I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025 and lots of great projects.🏁
Brilliant mate, really pleased for you. Well deserved after all the hard work. What's your thoughts now on reusing the head gaskets? Are you leaving well alone or ordering new ones now? Personally I think I'd get coolant in it, run a few warm up cycles before deciding. Merry Christmas!
Well I for one want to wish you a very merry Christmas. Amazed that it kicked over 1st go. In the history of similar builds it is almost unheard of so what a Christmas present. The distributor arm can easily be 3d printed. It will be a very thirsty engine and I am sure the cooling system will present more unforseen problems involving mounting in the chassis. A very nice well presented series. Congratulations from OZ (except we are in Sofia zero degrees centigrade on holidays.) Cheers. 🎉
Well that's a really great Christmas present ❤ , much better than socks 😂, well done this is what we've all been waiting for 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😎 👍
I've changed my mind.........i think you're going to need a loyalty card for Shell......BP.........Mobil........Texaco........and you may need to phone ahead 😄🎄
Awesome stuff
Another one saved. Well done pal 😊
Congratulations! She sounds good, I think you have a solid engine.. pretty hard to tune an old engine like that until you can build some heat in the manifolds.. Me personally, the clutch and transmission would be next while I was designing the frame/ body.. but that’s just me.. Merry Christmas from Cali…
That ran really nicely! Top work
Fantastic to hear it run, I love this series and will follow the build closely. Merry Christmas!
Great to hear the monster going. I'm very interested in your Austin Special project. I've just purchased an Austin 7 Fleming special raced for 60 years in Australia. I'm told it 57 bhp with twin su carbs.
Great well done , looking forward to more progress, merry Xmas.😀
It Lives! Happy Christmas!
Sounds awesome. Well done . Brilliant episode.
