Good if you didn’t drag things on for so long
Running sweet as a nut! Love a bit of Chinesium translation.... should have licked the end of the white wire while crossing your fingers and looking over your left shoulder by the sounds of it...😂😂
Chris, the only thing missing from you control panel is a big red emergency stop button! 🙂 You've come a long way since dragging the engine out of the swamp. Good days ahead.
Thanks!
Absolutely, amazingly beautiful. 🇺🇸⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍🏻🫵🏼
Evening Chris, fantastic update, very enjoyable. In terms of your old mechanical pump, the internal gubbins look VERY similar to the original glass bowl fuel pumps used on Triumph 2000 and Vitesse/GT6. I've got a few knocking around, so I'm happy to measure the diaphragm and one way valves from them, those rebuild kits are obviously available in the country for not much money. If you want me to measure up drop me your email address or ask Bryan for mine / mobile number as he has mine. Cheers again.
Great work again & ALF sounds wonderful well done !🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Congratulations! Thats amazing! She sounds great too!!
Cheers Mike! It's been a long old haul but the big old girl is now back in the game!
@thebracketfactory definitely excited to see what the chassis news is! Can't wait for The Next Thrilling Instalment! 😆 I get pretty frustrated trying to get my little projects done without a garage! It's just rained so much this winter!! 😫
Engine sounds sweet, good job Chris. Cheers John.
Thanks John!
Lovely methodical attention to detail, Chris; well done! I could watch your work all afternoon, gleaning ideas from your modus operandi. Really looking forward to the g/box and then the chassis construction 👍🏽😁.
Cheers Tim , really appreciate the comment.
Yes love the sound & how smoothly it seems to run. Looking forward to seeing the insides of that monster transmission too.
will it be a horror show or will it be spotless... place your bets!
Please let me know what battery you used and if the polarity is reversed. I have a 1939 ALF that did not come with a battery. Thank you for this very informative series.
Hi Michael, the battery is actually not very big - I think just 550A. It turns over pretty slowly but still fires up - I think I'll get a 900A and get it spinning over a bit more quickly. I'm not sure what the truck runs, but I'm running -ve earth on this and the starter seems to be happy enough with that!
Brilliant video again mate liked the dash making music, I've got a large 6cy diesel it run's about 80/85 also taco is electric powered from the alternator which i discovered many years ago and still find quite confusing
Cheers John. I'm not all that surprised that the tacho didn't work... time for Plan B!
Fuel pump …..”Munted”……
very!!
Runs beautifully. Great job!
Thanks Stefan!
Chris your roof needs mowing
Yeah, I need a goat!
@@thebracketfactoryspotted the green roof was wondering if it was yours or neighbour, haven't got one myself but seen quite a few and really like them, getting a goat is a great idea and if you find it's over mowing I've heard they make very good Curry's
@ ooh, Lamb curry… now you’re talking!!
@@thebracketfactory think goats favour making mutton curries
Hello Chris, thanks for another refreshing video.TH-cam seems to be polluted ,at the moment, with events on going on the other side of the Atlantic. I had a near fatal m/cycle accident 2 years ago so l can't do much in my workshop.l now enjoying watching you fettling in your shop. Looking forward to the next chassis episode Watching from Kenya, east Africa.Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it Francis, and thanks for the comment.
I've played quite a bit with modern tachs and driving them from micros trying to achieve a more mechanical look and came to the conclusion none of the mechanisms either moving coil or magnetic or steppers or servos are fast enough to really mimic a proper clockwork chronometric tach. Maybe some kind of laser galvo could do it but those aren't cheap! That needle moving to max and back on 'start up' always looks wrong to me on old cars. The mechanical tick back on a chronometric is so fast it's hard to mimic in electronics. I wonder if you could run a mechanical rev counter off the water pulley belt with a little wheel rubbing against the back of it?
I know what you mean about that 'needle sweep'... doesn't feel right for a 30's car. For now I just want working gauge, so I've got a few options.. I thing a hall effect sensor might work for that gauge to I might get one (cheap off ebay) and I could calibrate using my lathe. Plan B is a 60's 6 cylinder jag tacho. But I also have a mechanical drive cable coming of the distributor drive, so I could try and hook something up to that... choices choices!!
@@thebracketfactory Like you say you just need something that works for now and change it later when you find something better. If you are going for more of the aero look then aircraft gauges would be the thing but is that 'right' on a non aero engine? I don't think it matters on specials too much, do what works! What direction does your mechanical drive go? On the Riley it's anti clockwise which reduces the number of gauges that work. You could also easily (and cheaply) get a period cable driven speedo and make a new face for it but I have not done that so am not sure how that would work with the ratios.
@@asciimation that's a very good question (about direction of rotation)... never even thought to check! An American La France tacho would be nice (and would work!)
If it goes into a car many many times lighter than the original vehicle , it may not need a gearbox. It has a huge amount of torque. What diff ratio and tyre diameter were u thinking of?
I've not got as far as diff ratios yet... but yes, that thing has so much torque I could probably pull away in top! The tacho didn't work so I don't know what it ticked over at, but it felt very slow - I'd say about 750 rpm..
The gear shift is set up for a remote gear lever. If you remove shift housing a gear shift lever will bolt on.
I'm looking forward to having a look inside!
Good to watch. Very methodical Engine sound great. What would be the horse power. Crack on. Clive
Cheers Clive. Power is not enormous - about 275 bhp (maybe more on different manifolds and carbs), but LOTS of torque..
The engine sounds really good. Love the exhaust note. Looking forward to whatever comes next. Cheers.
Thanks for tuning in again!
Result!
yeah, I'm pleased with that! Cheers.
Sweet as.....pack it up & ship it to Tasmania. I have Cabover Chevrolet truck looking for a V12.😆
I'll put a stamp on it and stick it in the post!
@@thebracketfactory 🤣🤣🤣Yeah right....they would not know what to do with it.
sounds bloody awesome , i cant wait to see in in a frame! is it pressurising the cooling system? ...reused head gaskets??
Cheers Bryan. Yes, I re-used the head gaskets.. Not sure if it's pressurise... probably, though there are no swages on the water pump outlets so not totally sure....
well done Mr Bracket....more adventures with the truck gearbox hey....cant wait
Cheers Rob!
I just fitted one of those £26 fuel pumps to my v-max - my 3rd pump😂. Don't let them run dry or pull a vacuum. Filter King fuel filter/regulator would do the trick and I see they come with a gauge now. Good luck with the gearbox.
Cheers Keith - filter king/regulator has been ordered!
Marvellous 🎉
Thanks!
PUT A SEAT IN IT AND DRIVE IT DOWN THE ROAD😱🤪👍💪GREAT JOB AS ALWAYS SIR 👍💪🍺👍💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
yeah, a simple chain drive would do it!! (I'll have to have a chat with Bryan at Oak Swamp!)
@ you two need to build one together 😱🤪👍💪
Now waiting to see what this beast is going to power.
The deal is not quite 'done' so keep everything crossed!
wow what a lovely sound did you feel it in your chest??? ive been looking forward to that like you for a long time. Obviously not as much as your self but hey fantastic. A engine first start after a rebuild up is a magical thing. My brother rebuilt a large1920s/30s lister boat engine once dispite anchoring it" it still walked off down the garage so he was forced to pull the fuel while he was throwing tyres infront of it to prevent it walking through the wall and into the garden" With a young me running behind it with a piece of guttering pipe for a make shift exhaust trying to hold on to it for dear life like wrestling a giant snake. That was great very exciting lol
Fantastic, I hope you got all that on video!! The problem I have now I want to just start the engine when I should be delving into gearboxes!
@@thebracketfactory no sadly not it was before mobile phones.such a shame it would of had people laughing there pants off
Excellent work as usual Chris!
Thanks Ian!
The 'ceremony' needed more bling for that tach to work, obviously. Doesn't the needle screw in/out to adjust float lvl on the ol stromy's..great stuff as always
There may be a funeral ceremony for that tacho!! There is no screw adjustment for the float, but you could shim it I guess. I was very lucky with that 'tweak'.. it was spot on!
Regarding it slightly will help with cooling 😊, could you get an old Lucas tachometer for now 👍👍
yeah, needs more tinker time... but not on a Sunday morning; I'd get lynched! I've now got an old 60's Smiths tacho which I'll try... (but not holding my breath!)
Love that flathead sound, can't wait to see what it goes into.
It's a great burble isn't it!
Measure the successful float level using thickness of drill stem width. Replicate on other float. Drill stem widths are often used on carb sets.
Good tip, cheers!
Need to move the rubber fuel line from where it is touching the hot exhaust manifold. Might get a nasty surprise.
Good spot Brian!
Hi Chris , love the build . I've watched this video a couple of times. If you go to Pacific Northwest Hillbilly you'll see that Matt has set up his engine run-in stand with the same tach guage. On his he placed a hall effect sensor near the front pulley with a magnet glued to the surface of the rotating dampener for signal generation. Might be the same for yours! Cheers
Ah, good tip! Actually the instructions don't even mention the signal feed (so I just put to 'usual' place), but the picture in the instructions does look like a sensor... off to ebay I go!
written in the finest chinglish
It did make me chuckle!
Really enjoying this Chris. Can’t wait to hear more about the chassis 👍🏻👍🏻
Keep everything crossed Gavin!!
I will. I’m already trinket hunting in my garage to see if I have anything for your build 👍🏻
Sounds great! I have the same (or similar) Chinese Rev counter that I want to fit to my ‘29 Midget. But I got the diesel version for the 4K Rev range. Perhaps a mistake…
I think these might actually need a hall effect sensor to make them work... (£7.99 off ebay so I might give it a punt). I also have a Plan B which is a 60's Smith's tacho, and Plan C would be a mechanical drive. I'll probably end up going with Plan D!!
@ yes, I think you’re right: it probably needs a square wave input of some sort. But an older, 6-cylinder tachometer is probably what is needed? Or a simple mechanical drive (even an old Speedo would do if you made your own face with calibrated markings?)
@ yes, I've got an old Smiths gauge off a Jag... but I'm not holding by breath!
Nice work. I’ve got a Malpassi/King fuel pressure regulator and a manual contact tacho if you want to borrow them.
Cheers Nigel. I have a filter/reg ordered but I might take you up on the tacho..!
Sounds great. There is a chap in the USA that supplied me with a repair kit for the lift pump on my Dodge, includes replacement poppet valves, diaphragm etc and is suitable for ethanol fuels, the fuel pump looks identical to the one fitted on my 6 cylinder engine but presumably has a greater flow capacity?
I think those pumps were fitted to a few things, but even the American La France fire engine owners are junking them in favour of electric. My one has 'dissolved'!!
Love it, sounds very sweet. I am very keen to see the chassis.
deal not quite done yet so keep everything crossed!!
I guess the opening ceremony for the temp gauge was more exemplary than that for the tacho. Thanks so much Chris.
There may be a funeral ceremony for that tacho!!
Oooo, you are a tease: I'm really interested to find out about the chassis - and, eventually, the body. Best wishes.
It's not a done deal yet but keep your fingers crossed!
Fabulous work !!! We very much appreciate your attention to detail !
Thanks!!
that is a seriously smooth running engine, pity about the tacho, good job
yeah - 6 power stokes per rev does make it smooth .. and I had it ticking over really slowly too - I'd say sub 750 rpm. I've got a Plan B tacho so will try that..
@thebracketfactory looking forward to seeing it, thanks for the reply
Yep great progress and yes want to see your chassis selection. That gearbox looks very sad and heavy hopefully not just rust inside. But I guess you’re going to be having fun cutting gears I have only cut straight gears internally will be fun.
yes, the gearbox looks even sadder than the engine did... but where there is a will, there is a way!
That motor sounds incredibly quiet even without silencers!
yes, it has massive cast iron manifolds so that 'silences' it very well. I'm considering making some stubby pipes for it... that would make it MUCH louder!!
